It's not that simple. The system that created the mess will endure unchanged. All it will take for a repeat is the same cocktail of poisonous ingredients to be mixed together once again.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

The deploying of ICE and Army just makes me think Trump watched V for Vendetta and decided "YES THATS PERFECT"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,366 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

    What will happen? Nothing.

There will be the talking heads on some channels claiming this isn't America, or something needs to be done. But the likes of Fox News et al will flood the airwaves with whatever talking point Trump has decided give him justification. House leader Johnson will do nothing, blame the democrats maybe, and the courts will be unable to act swiftly enough (if they are minded or able to act at all) to do anything.

Trump will announce that the elections won't be held because of (insert made-up reason), and most people will say that it hasn't actually happened yet, and surely Trump is only messing and surely didn't he say once that he loved democracy.

As the time gets closer, more and more justification will be trotted out and the narrative will become muddied. You only have to look at how the WH, Trump, the GOP and the likes of Fox News are openly peddling lies and disinformation regarding the government shut down to see exactly how they will do it.

Finally, not one other world leader will even raise a concern about it. They will sit on their hands and continue to hope that if they play along Trump will be nice to them.

I’m sure the is a hell of a lot of MAGA in the US military and US federal and police departments who will happily ignore the constitution and follow their MAGA leaders orders knowing whatever crimes they commit for their MAGA leader he will do what he did for the January 6th Insurrectionists and give them presidential pardons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,804 ✭✭✭randd1

It's one thing to follow orders, it's another to open fire on your fellow countrymen. Which is where MAGA are wanting the US to be heading towards.

You'd wonder when placed in that situation, what they'll do.

You'd like to think some semblance of conscience would kick in and they realise "this has gone too far" and back away before they cross that line, and with it the end of all that crap .

    You'd like to think.

With MAGA though, it's just as likely it's their wet dream come through, and they get their fantasy of 'Civil War Part II; The Purification', and just start shooting anything they think isn't MAGA.

As long as the shutdown continues, the Epstein files won't be mentioned too much if at all. This is what Trump is hoping for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,204 ✭✭✭eire4

This is so true and so crucial a point to make. The facts are even when this regime is gone the US political system remains as it is an utterly corrupt and broken 2 party system that at best is only partially democratic. Add in the fact that one of the 2 parties is now openly anti democratic and openly authoritarian and the other party while not authoritarian is quite happy with the system as is and you can see that the future looks bleak for the US regardless.

Police fire on citizens every day. If you believe that person is breaking the law, or creating a danger, then firing on time makes logical sense.

This is the same military which blew a boat out of the water based on nothing more than expectation of it being drugs.

Fire first, maybe questions later. It is what they are trained to do.

I have never said I am a supporter of the current administration (and indeed have stated on several occasions that I did not vote for Trump), but I am a supporter of their authority to be the administration. An important difference which I fear is being overlooked by too many people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 406 ✭✭17togo

Fair enough, It does come across the other way, maybe you have stated it in messages that I've missed. Respect for the office is different from respect of the person, I agree.

But from your perspective over there what can you see might happen if what I've posted occurs. I know it's only a 'what if' scenario, but it's not all that an unbelievable scenario to happen either you'd have to agree.

Would you still be a supporter of their authority afterwards?

Yesterday, Rep. Madaliene Dean confronted Republican Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, saying that Trump was unhinged and unwell. Johnson responded that 'A lot on your side are too'.

    Finally admitting it

We surely can not rely on Manic's opinions as we have to assume BB is watching the internet and every post is a hostage to fortune.

I doubt many of us would find fault with his expertise or his attempt to be honest but we have to assume that any serving soldier in the Army who agreed that Trump and his cronies were a real and present danger to American Democracy would be unlikely to say so openly and identifiably in so many words.

It is not as if the Armed Services in any country would be considered as a bastion of the democratic process other than in revolutionary times.

    Harris is right again.

She said he would use the army against Americans.

She said he would use the DOJ to go after his enemies.

KAMALA HARRIS IN 2024: What you’re going to hear tonight is a detailed and dangerous plan called Project 2025 that Trump plans to implement.

TRUMP IN 2024: I have nothing to do with Project 2025.

TRUMP IN 2025: I’m meeting today with the architect of Project 2025 to implement it.

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

They managed to shoehorn their unhinged "member" into the top job, though.

I don't see him as "one of theirs" either- just that they accepted his usefulness as a tool to attack their enemy compatriots.

When the adults return the only way they can start a return to normality is to initially fire everyone hired by the trump administration. They would have to fire everyone currently employed by Ice and start re hiring them from the pre trump era. Like trump they would have to have people ready to fill the roles trump destroyed. They would have to restore the dept of education, the CDC, the DOJ, the DOD. It will be an enormous undertaking. It could easily take two presidential terms to get back to some sort of normality. It is probable that some of the International relationships will never be resolved, for example China might never buy soya beans from US again.

    True I suppose.

I'm just curious as to how far this will actually be let go. Hopefully the electorate will see sense if they are allowed cast their vote.

If a borderline Republican voter exists I'd like to hear where the line is that needs to be crossed before they'd decide this administration is dangerous. But that's the problem with the American 2 party system, you're either one or the other and you have to be all the way in in whichever side you are. Don't imagine there's many center left/right, that would switch depending on how the administration is going. Maybe I'm wrong...?!

Same with their news coverage, there doesn't seem to be a channel that caters for both, that will offer a balanced view. You're watching Fox or Newsmax if you're Republicans or everything else if you're a Democrat. And whichever you are, the opposites news channels are all 'fake news'.

If someone could manage to create a channel that caters for both sides it would probably do wonders to help the country.

First they shoot at the 'illegal immigrants' for 'resisting'

Then they at shoot the 'anti fascist Terrorists' for being anti American

Then they shoot at the rest of the terrorists (which is everyone trump says is a terrorist)

    Ban billionaires

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,448 ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

A new channel would do absolutely nothing, regardless of how balanced and impartial it could in theory be. For starters, to get such a thing off the ground, you'd have to raise an ungodly amount of capital just to get the thing going in all 50 states. Then you need to compete for views not just with the other networks but also with social media and the internet.

I think a reintroduction of the fairness doctrine that was repealed by Reagan would be a much better idea for the US.

    In other news, WTAF?!

This is beyond petty. Scientists all over the world rely on PubMed. It's absolutely the best there is at what it does.

Ireland really should be out in front and using the €14billion Apple money to get the best and brightest from American Universities and researcher over here to Irish Universities and research fields.

China's not buying Soybeans from the US

Turns out it's all Bidens fault!

    Who would have thought

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,204 ✭✭✭eire4

You nailed it again there with your mentioning of the fairness doctrine. Also I would say the most fundament problem they have is their utterly broken, dysfunctional and corrupted political system. But there seems to be no interest in addressing that at all from what I can see.

I almost enjoy the irony of incessant American virtue-signalling about their alleged freedom of speech under the first amendment combined with the pathetically servile of what seems to be the vast majority of them towards the system.

But it's not just when the Dems win back the White House. When Trump is gone, America will have to prove to the world that it won't regress into chaotic madness every time the GOP wins the presidency. Business, international trade and diplomacy cannot plan long term if there is a risk that every four years there will be an idiot crackpot in the Oval Office. The only way that can happen is for the moderate republicans to push out the MAGA lunatics and zealots and rebuild it as the type of party that used to be lead by relatively normal conservatives like Romney and McCain. I'm hoping the MAGA movement will die along with its leader. For the sake of the country, Trump needs to be the only MAGA candidate to win a presidential election.

All government websites are also claiming it's the Democrats who are at fault and people who are being furloughed are apparently forced to put this in their out of office messages.

Republicans are running the country into the ground, all because they are scared of a guy who will be dead in 5 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 470 ✭✭Iecrawfc

The Americans, especially the MAGA need to feel enough pain that they are traumatised for a generation into rejecting anyone talking about radical left, socialism and other right wing tropes. Hopefully they become real pariahs in the rest of the world and the economy sinks enough they are ciured of their arrogance and any republican associated with the admin has to go on the run for their lives.

At what point does your respect for the office diminish when the person holding that office abuses it?

The office is only as good as the person wielding the authority it provides.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,366 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

I wonder how much respect for the office people had when Obama or Biden was POTUS.

Certainly Trump has no respect for the office by dint of his complete disrespect if those in the office.

Trump demands respect for the office, but never gives it.

He probably gets some grovelling from his boot lickers that he keep around. It is very clear that other world leaders don't have an ounce of respect for him.
