And one I didn't expect. NATO member, in the top ten of world military powers, "friendly" with putin when it suits, but seems to feel putin getting carte blanche in the region is not such a great idea for Turkey.

Russia has always been a threat to it's neighbours and history has proven the Baltics and Poland completely right for their decisions to join NATO after the fall of the USSR and push for rearmament. Can't blame Western European nations for being hesitant, after the best part of a century of 2 world wars and the cold war many wanted to concentrate on more peaceful issues but the simple fact is Russia will never go away as a threat unless it's forced to reap what it sows, collapsing the country economically and militarily is realistically the only way this can end without it spiralling into a Third World War despite the fallout as you cannot negotiate in good faith with degenerate, lying bastards like Putin they don't respect anyone else only the threat of a boot to their face.
Trump won't get very far with his "talks" with Russia, he cannot force Ukraine to surrender on unrealistic terms and unlike Czechoslovakia in the 30's, Ukraine has the support of the vast majority of Europe minus that Toad Orban in Hungary who's increasingly at risk of losing power to a far more organised opposition and Fico in Slovakia who could likely end up back at the polls soon as his government is increasingly on the verge of collapse. If Trump tries removing sanctions he'll likely be unable to at any level where there's joint agreement with other countries required and a serious risk of a backlash from other countries if he tries doing it alone risking possible retaliation from Europe as well as other countries. The worst he can do is stop military aid but if that's already been paid for even more so other's are buying US arms he's less likely to stop something that's actually making money lest it come back to bite his own party in the ass.

We all knew Trump would appease Putin. I'm more disappointed with Europe not having Ukraines back. Surely they can step up support and sanctions and Ukraine can continue depleting the f**k out of Russia?

European Nations don't want to get dragged in but they're not fools, this is the best and only time they'll have to stop Putin and his orcish horde. He's weaker at any time in the past as most of their Soviet Legacy is scrap in the Ukrainian country side and his military are down to using loaf vans to attack. He has an extremely limited amount of competent troops remaining which would get wrecked if NATO got involved and besides if Ukraine falls that army Putin has built up won't be disbanded, he can't because the economic and societal implosion that would follow would end his rule with him going out the window. He'll go for the Baltics next or Poland and then Europe gets dragged into a conflict regardless. European Nations might hesitate but if push comes to shove the only choice will be to engage the Vatnik fúckers in Ukraine before they overrun it and if they do the biggest unknown is if Putin would be stupid enough to use a Nuke something which WOULD trigger a Third World War anyways.

Poland categorically ruled out any involvement of Polish troops. Germany says its nothing to even talk about until an actual peace. And UK says yes but not without the Parliament and not without US troops which the US already ruled out.
Much ado about nothing so. And yes the US can decide and negotiate without EU and Ukraine. They're the ones whose money and arms kept the whole show afloat after all. Without US money Ukraine is basically bankrupt overnight.
Also Russia already said EU membership for Ukraine Ok but NATO membership no way also no NATO peacekeepers. So there's that too.
The EU has the economic capacity to keep Ukraine going even if the USA goes back on its commitment to protecting Ukraine after they gave up their soviet era nuclear weapons.

Ukraine has the experience in fighting putin's terrorists that the EU needs to secure its borders and continue the economic stability in Europe that has seen the area thrive as an economic force. Those borders will include Ukraine no mater what the orange s**m**g says. Its a lot easier for the EU to send Euros than soldiers and they have already started the ramp up of arms production in EU countries and in Ukraine itself.

The European meeting was to align EU leaders in response to Trump's sudden moves (flipping world order over, leaning towards Putin and so on)
The EU has spent more than the US last year on Ukraine.
Reportedly the Saudis invited Ukraine to the talks and Trump and co said no.
To coin the analogy again, this is Roosevelt negotiating with Hitler during WW2. Without Europe at the table. For mineral wealth. And Roosevelt is a life long conman who's infatuated with Hitler. Hence people are naturally concerned.
Indeed Trump/Putin could come up with all sorts of deals - the key thing is they can't come to any arrangement without Ukraine.
If they do (come up with some terrible deal) and Ukraine says no, both Trump and Putin will blame Ukraine.
Personally I genuinely hope something does come out of this, there could be a peace deal in all this mess, but Ukraine and Europe will have to be involved. And every ex president (Republican and Democrat) is spinning in his grave at what Trump is currently doing.

When the helicoptor collided with the plane in Washington a few days ago, the press conference afterwards was stomach churning. The heads of the Transport dept. (Sean Duffy) and the Pentagon (Pete Hegesth) were almost trying to out-do each other in their efforts of how fawning they could each be, both immediately telling everyone how great Trump is, and how lucky the country was to have him in charge at such a time. Hardly a mention of the poor people killed, just how great Trump is, and how DEI was the real culprit (for that incident and far more).
Really, the more you hear from anyone close to Trump, the more it sounds like he's running an actual cult instead of an administration.

Again I don't rule out some surprises, including some possible nice aspects for Ukraine, possibly even a peace deal - but there's just so much shade over the whole thing and a sea of red flags.

No NATO Membership? If no NATO the next step is Ukraine restores their Nuclear Weapons, I guarantee you that if it's a choice between Ukraine in NATO or Ukraine with Nuclear Weapons pointed at Moscow then the 1st option is the cheapest and safest option for everyone.
No US soldiers? No Problem they got probably the most battle experienced army in Europe and likely others will join them in any sort of armistice as a guarantee that future hostilities wont happen. That could easily change if Trumpy pisses off enough people and bar any shenanigans the Republicans get turfed out next cycle. Also the minsk fiascos ensure that an armed deterrent is the only option to prevent Putin coming back to get slapped even harder.
As for the US withdrawing troops this would likely cause some serious drama at home as there's still plenty there who will call Trump out as a weak pathetic surrender pussy for capitulating to a weak Russia.
And Sanction relief: not happening so long as everything is not solely under their control and would likely trigger massive diplomatic and economic retaliations on Trump if he does. He's already doing damage to the US's reputation as a reliable partner and would actively harm his own country by doing so.
The 4% is Russia crying about Zelenski still being president and not having a vote during wartime which they can try and manipulate. Notice the jellyfish on here talk about Zelenski being legitimate while huffing life dictator putin's every emission.

In that same press conference, Hegseth kept banging on about how he was going to rid the military of DEI, and restore meritocracy. This, coming from a guy who is plainly unqualified for the job he's been given by Trump. There's literally 10's of 000s of people more qualified than him for that position, but there wasn't a hint of irony off of him!
If there's any positive to be taken from the whole ****-show, it's that the EU are absolutely under no illusions now about needing to take this issue by the scruff themselves. They should trust Trump as much as they'd trust Putin, and prove to Ukraine in no un-certain terms we'll back them to the extent Ukraine want (maybe get creative with that frozen €300m of Russian assets?)
