Nah. Famously Sweden decided to take a relaxed approach to lockdowns, and they experienced more deaths than closest socio-economic neighbours.
The first lockdowns were severe but that's understandable considering we didnt know much about the virus, how it would mutate and it was killing a significant number of (especially older) people. As we learnt more about it, and how to treat it, the lockdowns became more strategic, mainly to reduce high peaks that were putting a strain on the health systems. In India, hospitals ran out of oyxgen, in Europe patients had to be bussed to country hospitals because city hospitals were full.

Not a good reason for what? being glad? of course it is, I am glad my opinions are in no way aligned with the head-cases that think its all 'psy-ops' and other conspiracy nonsense. I am especially glad that the rule of law is being enforced on some of these morons.
Not all are total quacks, there are people even politicians/scientists/experts who were anti-lockdown, anti-mask, etc because of their personal views.
That said most still make the basic mistake of conflating common sense restrictions with "tyrannical" measures.

Just because a fringe have spent two years of their life endlessly railing against the lockdowns that took place across the world, multiple times, and global mask-wearing, and the vaccines, etc doesn't mean anything. It's just a bunch of people with extreme views.

No. At one point in the pandemic the CDC was advising against masks. Early in the pandemic there was confusion over whether they'd even be effective, whether the pathogens would be too small to pass through them, that they'd lull the public into a false sense of security. As we understood the virus more, how it spread, etc, the more consensus built for the use of masks.
Again, it's not political.
Likewise, wearing seat-belts isn't political, but when that law came out there were the same types of people going nuts over it. Some people just hate authority to an irrational degree, we saw that during this pandemic.

Wrong. This wasn't a new virus. It’s a coronavirus, it behaves like other coronaviruses, and other respiratory viruses more generally.
Coronaviruses have been known about since the early twentieth century, and in humans for decades. Covid-19 was new disease (caused by the virus family), the first case was in China at the end of 2019.
Likewise SARS and MERS, while we knew they were respiratory, and the virus was from the Coronaviruses family, we didn't know all the specifics of the new disease. It was a learning exercise, albeit a speedy one, by the world. Hence there was conflicting information in the beginning.

This thread just sums up perfectly the disgusting attitude that prevailed in this country during Covid. That horrible sneering, vindictive, self-righteous, willing to throw anyone and everyone under the bus to make themselves look good attitude. Thrashing around blaming absolutely everybody from the Cheltenham crowd down to 2 year old children not wearing masks. I’ve said it before about Covid that it has shown up a huge amount of people to be nasty spiteful cretins and it’s not showing any signs of stopping. People in this country should never be allowed to forget how they behaved during this.
I must also say that I’ve had all my vaccines and boosters like a good obedient little boy just in case anyone shouts the usual anti-vaxer bullshit at me.

Strange rant
It's an infectious disease, it doesn't care about someone's personal views or politics. It just wants to spread. We had to try and reduce that spread on a national level. Unfortunately there are people in society who, to put this bluntly, are highly selfish/ignorant, who don't want to wear a piece of paper over their face, so we had to make basic common sense rules. When people break or ignore those rules, they were putting others at risk. I didn't agree with every single one, but I understood why they were there, most people did.
When some guy in a supermarket was refusing to wear a mask near my at-risk family member I very politely handed him a mask. Some other people might not have been so patient. I saw many situations like that.

Around 23.4 million to be more precise as we now know what the actual IFR for pre-vaccine covid was. And that assuming that everybody would have gotten infected, which is practically impossible.
It's shown up a substantial amount of people to be utter selfish cretins who care for nothing other than their own immediate satisfaction regardless of any other consideration.
Yeah, tens of thousands more dead Irish people would have been a far better outcome.
