It seems like madness but I think there is method to it - China wants a diplomatic solution. If they were to turn down Russia's request then Putin is backed into a corner and in all likelihood will make even more crazy decisions - use of chemical weapons is a definite possibility. By lending support, China is keeping the door open for dialogue and prevents Putin from taking a step from which there is no coming back.

Indeed, that might be a possibility. The Chinese will see potential in this, but they will also want to avoid drawbacks. They have considerable leverage already with Russia, moreso now since the economic sanctions are hitting Moscow.

Huge mistake if they do. My employers rely on Chinese manufacturing heavily and then the covid crisis disrupted the supply chains.
For the last two years they have been planning on diversifying from their reliance on China. If the Chinese go down this route that will be accelerated and be actioned. I'm sure every other Western based company that uses Chinese manufacturing has been doing similar.
If there is one thing that would rapidly change China's fortunes then that is it. You don't need a complete shutdown a reduction in orders will do the trick.
