There was some collaboration in ww2 with the nazis in Ukraine though, with Ukraine nationalists. Most of the guards at sobibor were Ukrainian for example . They weren't the only collaboraters of course but maybe that was what she was referring to and thinking Ukrainians were all on the nazis side in ww2.
Some Ukrainians did volunteer to fight for Germany, motivated by their hatred of Communism, but the country as a whole didn't. They were welcoming to the Germans in June 1941 because they saw them as liberators, but the Germans themselves put paid to that idea pretty quickly. In fact the Germans' plan for Ukraine was starvation: grabbing all the grain and using it to feed Germany. Ukraine suffered horrendously under both the swastika and the hammer and sickle.
The slow process of the Russian army could pausable be due to Russian army commanders not really wanting to do what Putin is telling them. The fact the then US can listing to some conversation of Russian army movements could be a way the Russian army is trying to communicate this to NATO and the US.
I think the fact is that neither Ukraine or Georgia are getting into the EU any time particularly soon. It's one thing to make an emotional pronouncement about wanting them in the club, but the practicalities of it come to the fore when it really gets discussed. If those countries don't meet certain criteria to join, but are still admitted, you're opening up a pandora's box of complaints. The Balkan states will be asking questions, for a start. If the Ukrainian/Georgian governments are corrupt, you potentially have more rogue actors in the EP and CoE, and the EU is already at odds with Orban. If Ukraine and Georgia aren't of a certain standard economically, there could be discontent about Ukrainians and Georgians taking up job opportunities in the west of Europe but not really offering much opportunity themselves.

Maybe not. It will be spun and most likely believed that the West as usual and what it has done before is punishing ordinary Russian people because they were trying to save ordinary Russian people being attacked in Ukraine. That the West is punishing us narrative was a cornerstone of old Soviet propaganda to explain the ever more noticeable wealth gulf for the guts of a century and it has been kept going since the wall fell, with a short dip in the 90's.
I don't think people understand the fallback to seige mentality, the West is out to break Russia stuff that can be present in ordinary Russians. I've experience of it and found it alien. And these are intelligent well educated people living in and contributing to the West for decades. Now imagine those who've never left, only speak Russian and only watch Russian media. Maybe the closest parallel in Ireland might be the Orange order Unionist types up North? They believe what they believe and that's that and will twist in the wind to line up their perception of reality with that narrative. On a couple of occasions(because it was so alien and fascinating) I've tried to calmly dissect their views, agreeing with some, asking why they believe others, and they're nice about it, but the shutters come down. Not unlike the fervently religious. They're a very proud, very conservative and a very sentimental people who love Russia warts and all and with a general suspicion towards the West.
If anything I could see this actually bolstering support for the bloated gnome in the Kremlin, at least in ths short term. IMHO He's more likely to lose support if he's seen to fail in this 'military intervention' than by sanctions. The Czar can be cruel, enrich himself and his lords, silence his enemies and that's always been tolerated as the workings of the Czar, but if he looks weak and loses... He can never show weakness when fighting for Mother Russia. IMHO that's why him and his aren't backing down, even in the face of worldwide condemnation and sanctions, even though to a Western eye that sounds and looks insane.
The Chinese must be having some laugh, stock up on cheap oil from Russia that no one else will buy, watch the world go into recession and buy up everything they can around the world cheap then also.
Fair enough, that's your experience. Like I say the ones I know and they are well educated, the best they come up with is " there are two sides to every story" . If you probe them at all on what is happening they resort to the usual broken English, don't understand, mode.

The Chinese hold trillions of US debt. Which is no good to them at all if the US turns around and puts down strict sanctions. Russia has a big warchest of foreign currency which is effectively worthless to them while sanctions are enforced.

It's actually pretty pathetically low for you to even post that, when you know full well how many countless millions upon millions of Ukrainian people died and suffered greatly for the Soviet Union during WW2 fighting Nazi Germany.
Apparently, there is an age differential. Older people are much more likely to believe the non stop lies / propaganda being pumped out by state TV. Younger people are more sceptical (less likely to watch TV at all and have far greater access to social media).

I think there are Irish people out there-most in fact-who can objectively distinguish between real news, unsubstantiated news and fake news- you’re likely one such person- I’d like to think I am too-however there are others, and especially in Eastern parts of Europe who can’t do that and in times of war, I guess suppressing the enemy news agency is one way of reducing the amount of mad men and women out there spurred on to committing unlawful acts as a result of being influenced by such propaganda - I don’t favour the banning of RT myself but I can see why it’s necessary to do so in Europe as a whole- Many Ukrainians are claiming their relatives in places like Bellarus, Moldova and even Poland are already brainwashed and believe what Pukedom is doing is right.

Cultures can and do vary dramatically even inside a country, if it's big enough.
There wasn't much of an intelligentsia nor middle class in Ukraine for a very long time as they ended up dead, in gulags or somewhere out West. They had to relearn much of this idea of statehood and culture after independence. They did of course continue that black market shadiness and blatant corruption from the Soviet days, of which there are still vestiges. That said their concepts of hospitality are pretty much identical to the Poles and in western Ukraine they would see them as cousins.
Russia are saying 498 Russian soldiers have been killed. That is a huge number to admit. That 498 fully verified. Doesnt include MIAs and people disintegrated from massive explosions/fires etc.
And we all know 498 is the lowest number they could possibly come out with.

IMHO we should be sending those anti- tank missiles for sure. We may not be part of any military alliance but we clearly are not neutral in this conflict.
I no expert on WWII history, but as far as I can recall, Ukraine's role in that conflict is not really about what Ukranians did, but what Ukranians suffered. But maybe they were a bigger force than I give them credit for.
