Any news of EU following the same ?
The details haven't been published yet but travel from Ireland has been considered as no different as from anywhere in the UK for the whole pandemic (so no tests or PLF). It's possible that could change but it's unlikely.
On bbc news they just said British and Irish citizens are exempt from mhq if they are returning from a red list country, so that bodes well for being exempt from the Pcr between Ireland and uk
Ireland expected to follow suit as per Irish times. All arrivals will need a PCR on day 2 - do we have capacity for that?
Irish Times reporting the PCR test and self isolation for flying to the UK will also apply to Ireland. Disaster if true. But how does that work with the border and ferries etc?
dont think they are exempt, it’s more that uK and Ireland will do MHQ, and everyone else won’t even be allowed in.
but agree it bodes well for CTA.
the rationale for that I assume is to facilitate restriction free travel between the UK and Ireland, so not a disaster at all. If both countries have the same rules then there is no need to apply any restrictions to each other (not that the UK ever did anyway, but it would be good if Ireland did not require testing when coming from the UK)
How can there be restriction free travel if you have to do a PCR test and self isolate when you fly from Dublin to London?
Mr Johnson said all travellers entering the UK must take a PCR test by the end of the second day and self-isolate until they receive a negative test result.
The initial understanding in Irish Government circles is that this requirement will also apply to passengers arriving from Irish airports.
if true it’s the strictest set of rules the UK have introduced so far, not sure how they will implement it though, surely the NI loophole opens up again? Maybe the traffic via NI is so small they don’t care
He said all ‘international’ travellers and the UK does not class Ireland as international from a travel perspective (arrivals use domestic channels). I would be pretty sure someone in the IT or government has the wrong end of the stick here. I’d be surprised if after 19 months the UK sudden treats the CTA differently.
you’re right that there is no point the UK and Ireland having the same tests for arrivals and then also applying them to each other
Personally I think the IT has it wrong as it makes absolutely no sense.
Yea doesn't add up. Whenever you arrive into the UK on flights you arrive into the domestic areas. UK has never classified Ireland as international arrivals throughout
Us doing it though for other EU countries will be interesting - will the tests be free? We are at capacity as it is, adding 10,000s extra each day sounds unworkable to me.
Travel related testing will never be free. The day 2 arrival PCR tests in the UK typically costed about £60
Makes sense but even if people pay, is the lab capacity there? I guess the charge will dissuade a lot of people
Euronews Travel saying this will not apply to CTA.
A far less reliable source - the Twitter page of a Limerick Leader journalist screenshotted a response he got when asking the question - the response said the new restrictions will not apply to the CTA.
As expected
the bigger question is whether Ireland will introduce the day 2 test for international arrivals. With what is effectively a 3-4 day self isolation requirement for all arrivals
Yeah - just can’t see it, maybe for outside EU.
Jesus H Christ!!!
All over a new variant that they know nothing about yet!
This is just nuts!!
They haven't got a clue. No wonder people have just said feck it.
We’re due to go to the Canaries for new year with the smallies, will be a mare if pcr needed both ways. Will have to check when I booked flights might have to move them with these plonkers in charge. Myself and mr PC7 have our boosters, but doesn’t seem that will matter.
Spain dont have such a rule in place for EU travellers
Irish travellers do NOT have to do the day 2 PCR test when travelling to the UK

Nor do we at present. But it could happen, but I think EU travel would be a huge ask.
Best of luck to any politician who suggests this late in the day that Christmas travel should be knocked on the head for the 2nd year running
Ireland definitely will not be first country in EU to make PCR rule as pretty much rips up the EU digital pass
if likes of France or Germany make the move then we would prob follow
but we will not be the first county to move on this on an EU level
testing doesn’t rip up the pass. Even with the pass in place earlier in the year, EU countries had different testing rules, depending on whether or not you had the pass. I agree with you that Ireland won’t be the first, but it’s not difficult for countries to impose whatever testing they want on top of the pas
Portugal are the first aren't they
What restrictions have Portugal brought in?
Need a negative test even if vaccinated now to go in. Also need one if want to into a bar over there even if vaccinated.
