I only found out about it this morning so I may be just late to the party.

From an article in Forbes dated 17 March:

"A new variant of the novel coronavirus has been identified in the French region of Brittany. On Monday evening, the French Ministry of Health put out a statement that said the mutation was found by way of genomic sequencing in a cluster of infections in a hospital in the town of Lannion. Eight of 79 Covid-19 patients turned out to be carriers of the new variant, nicknamed “le variant breton.” Initially they tested negative with gold-standard PCR tests, despite presenting with typical symptoms of Covid-19. But later, coronavirus infection was confirmed with analysis of blood samples and tissue in the respiratory system. All 8 patients have since died".

Expected a little more myself too, but its still the highest Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday so far. Signs are good for a high number tomorrow.

There was a South African study that didn't look good but its a weak study with an insane confidence interval.

There hasn't been a reliable study yet. I am confident that it would have some benefit but I would not be suprolised to see recipients called for a booster at a later date.

It doesn't have efficacy against mild disease. Logic would state that it wouldn't do particularly well against severe disease but that is unknown at this point, and it may well reduce that.

I haven't read anything about this lately, but wasn't there talk of a booster jab, perhaps in the autumn? Personally I am not that keen on getting a third jab in a relatively short timeframe.....I'm in my late sixties. But if that's the way it is, so be it.

Would it make sense vaccinate school kids before low risk young adults? Not sure if it is more desirable to have them vaccined before the start of the new school year or not. Maybe the logistics of vaccinating the school kids would be easier when they are all together in school, in which case waiting until September would make sense.

Irish Independent leads with the Irish plan for the vaccination of those aged 15 and under here.

Nothing major new but the article makes reference to vaccines for 12-15 year olds in "first term of the next school year".

The US plan to vaccinate 12-15 year olds before school resumes i.e. August (Pfizer and Moderna)

The UK plan to vaccinate 6-15 year olds before school resumes i.e. August (AZ)

Hopefully the EMA will approve the Pfizer vaccine before school resumes and the first and maybe second dose can be given in August rather than during the first term.

Also, I wonder is AZ will seek approval of 6-15 year olds from the EMA and if so could Ireland vaccinate 6-15 year olds before school resumes?

I'm also booked for Tuesday in a hospital in Dublin and my text said I was getting AZ.

Yes, we are scheduled to get more AZ in April. Probably around 225k.
My guess is that the first big Pfizer/BioNtech shipment will be for the week of the 19th. That should clear the reminder of the over 70's first doses.
The remaining cohorts will likely get whatever vaccines are available in the MVC.

I really don't know but Stephen or Paul will tell us on Twitter! Pfizer is supposed to be increasing and we'll also have some J&J from the middle of the month.

I've been pretty negative on here with regards government policy to how we handle restrictions prior to a general mass of the population being vaccinated. But I've absolutely no issues with the vaccine rollout. They've been as quick as they've been allowed to be with the supply they have. They altered course with the change to an age based approach that should quicken things up further. My grandmother got her first short a couple days ago and it was easy and smooth. All in all I think they have done, and are doing, a really good job doing a very difficult task.

Vial filling is extremely complex for injectables and being able to fill more doses into one vial means they can get far more doses out to people, more quickly.

There aren't that many places that can do huge scale fill and finish. It's an extremely technical process and requires machines that are highly specialised and only made by a very small number of companies.

This is a huge bottleneck that people don't quite understand in commentary. In normal times, to even order the machinery to do this would take a lot of forward planning (often a couple of years or more) as they're small volume, highly specialist companies who provide this kind of thing.

You can't just ring up and say "send me 4 of those MK9 vial fillers".

So getting more doses per fill is going to speed things up.

Ideally, these would be distributed in pre-filled injectors as is the case for flu jabs, but so far that's not happening.
