He's not quite a random lad, he is the primary developer behind the North Quays in Waterford. Complete buffer though, he got mixed up with a proposal that there would be a train going every hour from Dublin to Waterford with the train taking one hour and he refuses to accept he made a mistake and continues to repeat the lie. Exactly. By September we should be trying to encourge anyone who hasn't opted to take a vaccine yet to take one. The best way to be that is to make life as easy as possible for vaccinated people. If vaccinated people still have to get tested a lot of people simply won't bother taking it. Are we going to start testing people for colds too?

Sounds like we're not going to be at herd immunity levels of vaccination by September then, which is rather unambitious, or we're going to be rolling something out months after it's no longer needed, which is not unheard of with the way this campaign has been run so far.

We should have rolled out antigen testing months and months ago. It's been remarkably slow to happen here. A lot of talk. A lot of paranoia about reinventing the wheel when it comes to signing off and approving tests and nothing rolled out.

If there are big issues with variants in September however, we'll be looking at ongoing problems and needing to roll out booster shots / revaccination of cohorts to ensure it's not going to surge back.

Vial filling is extremely complex for injectables and being able to fill more doses into one vial means they can get far more doses out to people, more quickly.

There aren't that many places that can do huge scale fill and finish. It's an extremely technical process and requires machines that are highly specialised and only made by a very small number of companies.

This is a huge bottleneck that people don't quite understand in commentary. In normal times, to even order the machinery to do this would take a lot of forward planning (often a couple of years or more) as they're small volume, highly specialist companies who provide this kind of thing.

You can't just ring up and say "send me 4 of those MK9 vial fillers".

So getting more doses per fill is going to speed things up.

Ideally, these would be distributed in pre-filled injectors as is the case for flu jabs, but so far that's not happening.

My husband got an appointment for Tuesday in City Hall Cork ( cohort 4) the relief!

Any idea what vaccine he will be given, he just got a call, he didn't think to ask. It doesn't matter he is happy with either, I am just interested to know when he will be fully vaccinated.

We've just received 100K of AZ so most probably that.

I've been pretty negative on here with regards government policy to how we handle restrictions prior to a general mass of the population being vaccinated. But I've absolutely no issues with the vaccine rollout. They've been as quick as they've been allowed to be with the supply they have. They altered course with the change to an age based approach that should quicken things up further. My grandmother got her first short a couple days ago and it was easy and smooth. All in all I think they have done, and are doing, a really good job doing a very difficult task.

I really don't know but Stephen or Paul will tell us on Twitter! Pfizer is supposed to be increasing and we'll also have some J&J from the middle of the month.

Yes, we are scheduled to get more AZ in April. Probably around 225k.
My guess is that the first big Pfizer/BioNtech shipment will be for the week of the 19th. That should clear the reminder of the over 70's first doses.
The remaining cohorts will likely get whatever vaccines are available in the MVC.

I'm also booked for Tuesday in a hospital in Dublin and my text said I was getting AZ.

Irish Independent leads with the Irish plan for the vaccination of those aged 15 and under here.

Nothing major new but the article makes reference to vaccines for 12-15 year olds in "first term of the next school year".

The US plan to vaccinate 12-15 year olds before school resumes i.e. August (Pfizer and Moderna)

The UK plan to vaccinate 6-15 year olds before school resumes i.e. August (AZ)

Hopefully the EMA will approve the Pfizer vaccine before school resumes and the first and maybe second dose can be given in August rather than during the first term.

Also, I wonder is AZ will seek approval of 6-15 year olds from the EMA and if so could Ireland vaccinate 6-15 year olds before school resumes?

Would it make sense vaccinate school kids before low risk young adults? Not sure if it is more desirable to have them vaccined before the start of the new school year or not. Maybe the logistics of vaccinating the school kids would be easier when they are all together in school, in which case waiting until September would make sense.

What's the story with AstraZeneca and the South African variant? Reading one or two articles from the past week saying the vaccine isn't doing great towards it. Am I reading the wrong articles?

I haven't read anything about this lately, but wasn't there talk of a booster jab, perhaps in the autumn? Personally I am not that keen on getting a third jab in a relatively short timeframe.....I'm in my late sixties. But if that's the way it is, so be it.

It doesn't have efficacy against mild disease. Logic would state that it wouldn't do particularly well against severe disease but that is unknown at this point, and it may well reduce that.
