AZ have not applied to the FDA for approval yet. If/when approval is achieved, it will be too late because most/all adults in the US, who want a vaccine, will have received one at that stage. Hence, the US has millions of AZ vaccines that are likely never to be put to use in the US.

Ya, even if they applied today, I'd imagine it's 3 weeks or so to approval, and considering the amount of bad press it's got, I'd imagine at that point anyone looking for a vaccine will just wait the 2-3 weeks extra for Pfizer or J&J.

Naomi O'Leary in The Irish Times thinks 79% of adults will get the vaccine in Ireland before the end of June.

Her analysis excludes CureVac, excludes novavax, excludes the possibility that AZ will deliver more than expected, does not factor in that 6-21% of Irish people will not take the vaccine, seems to be based "adults" rather than those 16+ and excludes the possibility that we will get doses from the UK/others in June.

Never the less, it is another indication that dose one will be complete before the end of June.

You could see both the US and UK releasing vaccines by then, especially AZ. Even so it's all still on the very optimistic side until we start to see mass vaccinations, in our case the 250K a week the HSE have promised, to be convinced.

Now, maybe nothing has changed and 31st was the date, but mid-July was what the politicians were saying.

Don't think so. I'm sure they weren't being a specific as a particular time within a month anyway for the "all adults" category. The mid February for groups 1-5 and mid April for groups up to 9 was as specific as it ever got, then it was just a month beginning with J for the all adults bit.

Maybe they switched between June and July, but the most recent reports don't mention any change to that month.

So In another way, if Astra Zeneca did a proper phase 3 trial in the US first time round they would nearly be done at this stage, or at least surpluses may have started getting go elsewhere

Yes, this seemed reinforced by the EMA spokesperson on Morning Ireland as well. It seemed like a bad news day but no, we are still largely on track. It might improve in Q2 with Curevac, of course, or at least in Q3.

Summer is still on IMO - i.e. some relaxation of restrictions permitting travelling, dining, small get togethers etc, at least in late summer.

Report from Norwegian Physician stating that the blood clotting observed in three HCWs was was due to a immune thrombocytopenia reaction i.e overreactive immune response to the vaccine.

Clarification that these types of reactions are very rare, in this case, 3 out of 120k . This phenomenon is observed elsewhere but normally associated with drug therapies.

Separately a Danish professor has suggested blood clotting can happen due to improper vaccine administration technique.
