New, unregistered Irish-bought car from 1976 - where do I start?

So, my Dad (God rest his motoring and hoarding soul) bought a new Peugeot 504 in 1976, drove it home, decided he wasn't that keen on it, wrapped it in a few blankets and some plastic sheets, then kept it hidden away in the garage for the rest of his (and its) life.

It's now 2019 so the car is 43 years old, yet to all intents and purposes, it's actually brand new - unregistered as far as I can see and with just a couple of hundred miles on the clock. I'd love to get it up and running but need a few pointers as to where I should start with regard to the tax/registration side of things as I've no knowledge about classics at all.

The car has no plates and there is no sign of a log book or any form of documentation, not even a sales invoice/receipt or anything like that (you see, while he was an avid hoarder of things, he wasn't so keen a keeper of paperwork :-). So, my question is, what would be the first step to take as regard getting this car officially on the road?

(Btw, my dad's entire estate was left to my mum when he passed away last year, so I guess she would be the official owner now and we would be looking to register it in her name.)

As I said above, any initial pointers from anyone who has any direct knowledge of this sort of thing would be great. I have done some googling but I haven't found a scenario exactly like this, so I thought it would be worth asking the question here and seeing what you guys think and what advice you could offer - Many thanks in advance for your help.

Well its no surprise that I was interested in the VW from the moment I saw it
posted up here.

It was a car I have always had a longing for since way back when we had them
in the family, and from the outset I had been in contact to offer help if needed
to offer any advice on the car to Alfa.

And when I heard of the history of the car, you know I advised alfa that maybe he should keep it.

But he had a goal in site to raise money for his charity, and offered me the chance to meet his asking
price. So i agreed . And the rest they say is history. I travelled to see the car, and was delighted
that i had bought it. I had the pleasure of meeting Alfa and his mother, lovely, lovely people.

Kadman, I am already looking forward to seeing how the restoration goes over the coming months. I have great memories of those cars when I was a child.

This might be a strange question Alfa, but did you by any chance find any cylinder lawnmowers that your father might have ever bought / kept in those sheds of his? I don't have the space for a tractor...

Judging by the amount of sand in the lower front part of the wing here, I would hazard a guess that many a happy hour was spent beachcombing in this car:)

Now burrying my jack in sand :P And still preserving the original paint beneath

Mechanical parts in this area appear to have faired very well.

Small amount of body work thats to be expected. But this area does not indicate any real need to remove the body from the pan at the moment. Which is great.

This one has front discs and rear drums.

I have to give credit to the recovery guy Co Curtin from Wicklow, who I contacted through Donedeal.

Small world as it turns out he was the leading salesman for VW back in the day.

He was an absolute gent, who probably charged me a lot less than the hardship he got while collecting

and unloading this car. So I must say thankyou to him, and highly recommend him for this type of pickup
