As I said in the other thread the WHO has warned countries not to lift restrictions early because they face a 'doom loop' of having to reimpose tougher restrictions.

This is far worse a trap for society and the economy.

We must avoid this fate ourselves.

I was in a takeaway last Fri (first takeaway of the lockdown), you could see into the kitchen, spotless place to be fair, all the chefs in gleaming white chef gear...... Anyway, two taking phone orders and passing out the grub ......... both of them touching face masks routinely and also placing them on their chins for some phone chats.

Folk I see with them in cars have them on the chin (in between calls/deliveries maybe).

Folk in shops with them on seem to ignore the 2m thing because they presumably reckon they are protected.

Facemasks are grand to catch a sneeze or cough but they aren't the be all and end all for the bulk of the population that some reckon they are, IMO.

If they are worn widely I'd fear that the 2m social distancing will lapse by many.

The French prime minister, Édouard Philippe, has begun outlining the schedule for the end of the coronavirus lockdown in France to MPs in the Assemblée Nationale.

Philippe began saying the situation was unique. “Who could have envisaged a France where schools, universities, cafés, restaurants, the majority of businesses, libraries … beaches, stadia … would be closed. We have never known this situation in our country. Not during the war, not during the occupation, not during previous epidemics,” he said.

“The country cannot be locked down for a long time … it is efficient against the virus, to stop its spread and the saturation of our hospitals and protect vulnerable people.”

“An instrument is only useful if in the long term the positive effects are greater than the negative … We have to proceed to a progressive end of lockdown.”

Philippe said he would outline the “national strategy” to end the lockdown. In medical terms “we have to learn to live with the virus …no vaccine will be available in the short term, there is no treatment and we don’t have what they call herd immunity”.

After stoically sucking up more than six weeks of tough restrictions, including four weeks of full lockdown and with plenty to go, the people were put on the naughty step.

The Taoiseach said the public’s behaviour could result in full lockdown being extended by “two or three weeks”, taking us into the third week of May. Funnily enough, that chimes exactly with how long the HSE says it will take for the State to ramp up Covid-19 testing to the level that we have been repeatedly told is necessary for an easing.

So which is really to blame? Flouting of restrictions, or the State’s repeated failure on testing? A cynic might say the Government is allowing the public to be the fall guy to distract from its own mistakes.

This is exactly why people are beginning to be rightly pissed off now .,Its the HSE s failure to act that is delaying the lifting of restrictions

Which is why you have to try and make a reasonable measure to try and balance the well being of everyone against it. And well being includes factors like mental health, economy and health in other areas. Covid-19 doesn't trump them all.

The main function of the mask is to stop people spreading it so once they keep it on around other it's better than nothing.

Austria,
Austria has said that citizens would be allowed to leave the house for non-essential trips as it eases coronavirus lockdown measures, but said limits on gatherings and social distancing rules would remain in place.

Currently, residents are permitted to leave the house only for certain trips, including to go to work if they cannot do their jobs from home, or to buy food or seek medical care, according to restrictions rolled out in mid-March.

But from 1 May, people will be permitted to leave their homes with fewer restrictions, as long as they do not meet in groups and respect social distancing rules.

Public gatherings will be limited to ten people, or 30 for funerals, until at least the end of June.

France

Shops and markets can reopen when France's coronavirus lockdown eases on 11 May, though schools will resume classes only gradually and face masks will be compulsory on public transport, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has said.

Philippe told parliament that home confinement had helped brake the epidemic and prevented tens of thousands of deaths, but the economy now had to be reopened, though "with prudence, progressively".

Philippe has said that a lockdown imposed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic had saved 62,000 lives in a month, but that keeping the restrictions in place would mean risking economic collapse.

Speaking in parliament, he said it was time to explain to the country how the lockdown would gradually be eased. French citizens will have to learn to live with the virus and to protect themselves, he said.

Never said it shouldn't. But at the moment we are at war with a virus and at this point in time that takes precedence. Will things change - yes they will.

What is sure is that the pandemic will cause health problems - both physical and mental for years to come for those who are infected, those in the frontline and those who have loved ones who die. And those sho are affected for many other reasons.

There are no simple answers atm.

In Germany the number has been hovering around 1 for over a month. Data quality is also an issue. Such numbers are up to 2 weeks old by he nature of it. Going from 09. to 1 doesn't mean a lot really.

This is Germany's R0.

It probably will help but it’s arguable that the benefits are outweighed by the negative impacts.

You could use all these arguments against condoms also. Plenty of people put them on wrongly, re-use them, engage in more promiscuous behaviour but no-one seriously argues that they're not a good idea on the whole.

Ultimately the benefit of masks is in reducing the spread of droplets from infected persons. Confusion seems to arise because they're not very effective in preventing the wearer from infection in most cases but they do protect other people from the wearer.

As the poster above said are condoms also useless people some people don't know how use them? so no one should use condoms
