With s & c nowadays, players will go on far longer with better game management I don't see who coming through now will usurp these even past their primes. The top tennis player in the world is 36, Toulon won a European cup a few years back littered with 30 somethings. Paul O'Connell had arguably his best season at 37 years of age

In rugby older lads can still play amongst the forwards to a high level well into their 30's. You don't see it so much in the backs though which is probably a closer comparison to GAA.

I just don't get why there seems to be this general attitude that once you hit your 30s you're done. Cavanagh won tyrone an ulster last year, Donaghy had an outstanding year this year, remember tomas o'se bombing down the wing at 35 v dublin in 2013, Mickey lindon played an ulster final at 40! Ok these were great players but arguably much less to prove and far more reason to walk away earlier

Definitely the most obvious thing the ref missed was the black card that AOS should of received just after half time. The ref was very poor, for both teams, but that's not the reason mayo lost. They had ample opportunities to win but made bad decisions all day

Yet again I've heard the "we didn't perform in a final" line from them... not a whole pile bugs me, but that certainly does. Kilkenny had 66 possessions against Tyrone. He had 8 against us. He wasn't allowed perform to the best of his ability. It's a small thing and there was plenty of mutual appreciation going around but I do think that line is a kick in the teeth.

Let this years panel on holiday for a couple of weeks in January. Scully emerged from that Dublin squad. Maybe a player will emerge in same way for Mayo that would make a difference later in the year - I'd change captain. This is not a criticism of O'Connor. I think it could bring a freshness to Mayo in a small way. Joe canning spoke of being relieved when he wasn't Galway hurling captain any more despite being so honoured to do it. He'd be a player comparable to O'Connor in what he brings to his team. Give it to Keegan or Boyle to shake things up a little. How long has O'Connor been captain? I don't think O'Connor is as good as he was and maybe not having to worry about captaincy might help him.

Just as Mayo did in this years drawn quarter final against the Rossies and, the two Connaught semi final losses to Galway, two years in a row. It happens. Whether the other team was just so good, they nullified all that makes you great, or you just came out flat and under motivated on the day, or the manager got all his match ups wrong, or complacency sets in... it's probably six of one and half a dozen of the other, depending on which side of the win/loss column you wind up on. Fact is, teams under perform for a variety of reasons. Dublin have under performed in the past and will under perform again in the future. As will Mayo. As will all other teams at some stage or other. Getting upset over it, serves no purpose, especially if you are expecting the other crowds manager or players to start waxing lyrical about how great you are. That just ain't gonna happen. Not these days. Inter county managers are not going to hand their opponents the mental advantage of admitting they were shyte and the other crowd bate them out the gate, because they were a superior team. It is unrealistic to expect them to, when they are all so careful about what they say, especially as certain sections of the click bait media will blow things all out of proportion, the minute there is a hint of real openness and honesty.
