Thought I'd update the OP with links and stuff for anyone who stumbles across this.

The former Off the Ball hosts have partnered with The Irish Times to do a series of weekly podcasts. They go online each Tuesday and cover a variety of sports, with a number of contributors including Sid Lowe, Richie Sadlier, Gerry Thornley and Shane Horgan.

Oh god. I think McDevitt is an absolutely great broadcaster, brilliant interviewer, but his voice trying to hype up a crowd is consistently cringey.

The way his shouts hang there and then trail off...ugh.

I remember Ken sneering at Giles' assertion that their is no great tactic in the sky a few months ago, I'd love to hear the two of them discuss Ken's favourite player of all time, David Luiz, that would be worth paying for.

When I listen to Giles talk I find myself nodding in agreement most of the time, when Ken talks half the time I think 'that's an interesting theory but you're talking sh1te'

I'm not a fan of the 'live' pods at all, a bit like the TV show I just don't see the point of an audience. Much more fun if you're there I'm sure, as you say.

Don't think the book was up to scratch this year either - apart from the Fair View (which is incredibly good) there's not a lot else there. Nicely produced though.

I'm not really sure how much Ken knows about actual football. I think he's great at covering the whole circus around football and all the characters in it though.

There was a throwaway comment about "the future of the podcast" in one of the live pods....

Maybe I'm just so downtrodden by the consistent cancellation of every show I like, but combined with the lack of a sponsor atm, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a tad worried.

Yeah I think it was from US Murph - I got the impression too it wasn't just a throwaway comment and the future of the podcast might not be secure.

It does have a pretty loyal listenership I'd say - could probably charge something for it. I'd definitely sign up for Irish Times monthly subscription if you had to to download the show.

I got into listening to this pod during the summer, and I find myself listening to hear what new nonsense Early has come up with.

I enjoy the fact its typically alternative views and thoughts on the English game from the run of the mill English football pods I listen to. But the lads still sput an awful lot of ****e.

Well the podcast is under the Irish Times banner -it's possible that they could include it behind the paywall (€12 per month) and you would have to pay to access all their content - you could choose to just listen to the lads of course.

The Anfield Wrap has both free and subscription based podcasts. I think it's a fiver a month for the extra stuff.

I think it was tried in the early days of podcasting but wasn't really much of a success. Never Not Funny charged up until a couple of years ago.
Answer Me This and Dan Carlin produce for free, but charge for archived shows. SC pods are mostly about the sports stories of the week and therefore almost valueless a week after they're published.

The patreon model seems to be the popular way to fund a show these days. People donating per month/episode get exclusive content, add free feeds and or earlier releases.
I'd say that they have enough fans willing to throw them €5 a month to make that a success, but it might seem a bit grubby for the paper of record.

*Nerd Alert* They also have a separate subscription of €35 a year for the crossword only. Something similar could be done for access to all their audio content. I doubt it would work though.

I d love to know how much the guys are pulling out of this wage wise.

Between the podcast tv and newspapers i d be shocked if it was more than â‚¬300k to divide between the 5 of them..

That sounds realistic or maybe even on the high side, but they probably get a nice top up this time of year from sales of the annual.

They do need an external sponsor badly though. I can't see how using the IT as sponsor can be a long term solution.

Given their unique overseas reach to Irish expats you would think there would be plenty of international companies that might benefit from the publicity, currency brokers, international bulk shipping companies, Irish bar chains, airlines etc.

Giles gets a pass from me, outdated and all as some of his views and opinions are; I think he means well, but Dunphy hates criticism - usually becoming extremely childish and petulant when challenged - and likes making himself and his huge ego part of the story, all the while not having as much of a clue about what is actually happening in modern football as about 90% of the posters here - he's occasionally entertaining, but that's not saying much, if you ask me. A total joke pundit, who should have been retired a long time ago.
