Just got a request for almost €11 on a €15 item from Amazon UK. Seems excessive.
Vat 3.50 admin 6.95.
Excessive but predictable. They didn't include the cost of shipping and insurance in the value of the goods so actually you were undercharged
Amazon should refund that, they are supposed to charge the vat in advance
Cost of shipping and insurance? How so?
It's a tiny battery in a tiny envelope. I only ordered it because I was finding it hard to get in the shops here.
I dunno I've had few things charged with a euro or so before. Comes back later etc. But this amount and the ratio vs the cost of the item seems excessive.
Usually works out cheaper than amazon.ie. but this is ridiculous no?
What if I refuse the duty and it goes back?
I ordered a few other items from other places in the UK. They were 30-40 and nothing like this. But not from Amazon.
Was it a third party seller?
Well I thought it was Amazon because I usually avoid them. But yes it seems to be a third party seller. Kinda annoyed I missed it. I usually cancel an order if its it's fulfilled by someone else. I find 3rd party's delivery times extremely poor.
for customs purposes, the landed value of goods is equal to the purchase price plus the cost of shipping plus the cost of any insurance. Any import charges are calculated on the basis of that value. 23%VAT + whatever the duty is (varies) + the clearance/admin fee. Customs and couriers don't give a **** if it's tiny and almost worthless, you will get hit with fees unless it's a gift, is covered by some sort of waiver or is sent DDP (delivered duty paid - ie the shipper covers the import charges)
I guess I won't do that again.
It's not for an post or couriers to hold your hand when ordering from outside the EU.
The customs rules are exceptionally clear.
An post and couriers are legally obligated to apply the charges, so whining about what they do is simply ridiculous.
I'm not whining
To be pedantic you're whining about people having a pleasant discussion on a forum.
The issue is I clicked in error on a third party seller mostly because they have have it in tiny font that make it really hard to spot. This is deliberate on Amazon part to catch the unwary.
Usually I avoid them. All my other recent Amazon parcels direct from Amazon have been delivered duty paid and also was a car part from eBay.
I'm completely aware of the duty issue but this the first time I've got caught out this way with a third party seller. I was just shocked at the amount.
Item should be about €4-5 in local shop. I'm paying extra for getting it delivered and because I couldn't find it in the shops. But it costing €25 due a click error on my part is incredible.
Someone another forum suggested www.hagglezon.com and on that I can see the item is cheapest from Germany with everything applied correctly.
It's the other poster whining.
....
so why quote my post?
