Forecast looking good out to next Tuesday - anyone going to chance it?
It's actually the other way around, baler is/was shocking after being "saved" from decades sitting in the weeds, there's a lot of new sheet metal gone into it and more needed, but was relatively mechanically sound. Tractor just needs to have the bonnet put back on after getting brakes, clutch and steering sorted.
Yeah it's ok hoping there will be a Hay window sometime between now and September but stuff that's ready to be cut say next week would be pure rubbish by September
What kind of probe I'd this, my little wood moisture meter would be about as useful as a weather stone.
178 is shook looking no doubt! Is that a back wheel from a David Brown that is on it?
Unless there's someone around in heavy training, I wouldnt be inflicting turning round bales in anyone, for the little bittern if waste above and below, its hardly worth it, imho.
One of these, great tool for straw too
Weather so changeable this year, yesterday it was balmy and bursts of Sun through cloudy spells, today it’s wet, windy and you would be reaching for a coat!
Got 45 organic round bales of light stuff made last week in North Cork in 4 days! Have a blast more to make but doesn't look like any opportunity for the next ten days anyway
Possibly, could be from an international, I don't think that was it's biggest issue to be honest.
Have one similar, great piece of kit. Used at when selling hay so I priced the hay right. If that's 13 it's very good stuff.
where’d you get them?
man on donedeal in kildare selling them
15 or less and you will have very little dust..dust is a big issue for the horse men around here
just a matter of interest , should it be inserted at an angle on the rounded side of the bale ? sticking it in from the flat side is much looser and will give a lower moisture reading
i bought mine a few years ago off a fella in ballon co carlow. He advertised on donedeal. Works with straw too. It makes an honest man out of you if you are the seller or the buyer.
Grass moisture will be the same regardless of what part of the bale,
what’s it actually called as trying to google it
it’s a moisture meter. Few on Amazon but huge variation in price.
You will find them on done deal. Bought one off a fellow from the north that had used it for straw he used to sell. It has to be below a certain % for who ever was buying it. It can be very interesting to check bales afterwards.
Have that one
Weather promised sh1te until at least mid July. BBC is showing rain every day until the 17th. Gone fecking cold today too. Stuff growing has gone awful rough now with the rain. Thank f I took the chance back in June, the rest of my stuff is full of docs and seeded hay that would need a right blast of weather to save it.
Given how forecasts have gone so far this year, it probably means hay weather again in no time 🤣. This year really showed anything past 5 days is not promised.
But yes, good to have the bit done early, summer could easily slip away without ever giving us that perfect hay weather.
Looks like a break is coming in the weather this week, from Wednesday onwards looks good enough. 5 days in a row promised dry, no great heat but there will be a breeze so it should make for ok Hay weather.
Ground has disimproved around me, as it has made very heavy rain last night. It'll need a days drying before I can even cut as the stuff is like a wet carpet now.
Must finish off the slurry spreading in the meantime
Bought 30 round bales of June stuff at 40euro each for the year that's I it I thought it was OK value.
Considering the year we've had weather wise it's good value. Better to be looking at it than looking for it.
We bought & drew eight loads of June hay from NCD/Meath to regular clients and they were more than happy to have them in the shed. We kept two loads for ourselves.
Jas I don't know, just don't see this week being Hay weather but hope I'm wrong.
That's been the common theme of the year, looks pretty clear here till Monday, except some mist/ rain tomorrow. No worse than the forecasts where we made hay during June. Nearly tempted for 5 acres myself, but heading away for a few days on Monday. I'll probably wrap it up, have plenty of hay at this stage anyway.
I'm going for it this afternoon, ground is not ideal and we've a sup of rain promised Tuesday but I can't be waiting around for a better forcast that may never come. That'll be Weds-Sunday dry, which should be more than enough. Very little Hay made this year so far
Thats a steal for June hay. I've been approached by a riding stables for some hay but I told them I'll not be selling any hay down of 60 a bale as its too much effort to make this year. They are ok with that and will take all I can give them, but the stuff I'm cutting this week is too rough for horses, I'm kicking myself now for not topping and cleaning up the meadows this spring
Yeah I think I'll chance it myself this afternoon after mulling over it all morning - just nervous the temperatures won't be good enough but can always wrap it up if I can't get the Hay
Im going to go with this spell have 15 acres to knock and will start at lunchtime.
What part of the country ye in? I see Met Éireann after issuing a yellow rainfall warning for persistent and heavy rain tomorrow for about 2/3rds of the country.
