Yesterday I got a super deal on a Audi A5 sline, TRSI only to find when I got it home from cork the engine is a disaster

It was a private sale so no warranty. Basically its spraying white smoke when idle , and the engine is hoping when in a low gear, It's burning oil.

Got a mechanic out 200 euro to change the coils or remove a bad plug that was misfiring or something, mechanic gave up.

Not sure where to bring it, anyone know any Audi genius for this terrible engine.

    Horrible feeling, feel so stupid.

Find a good indy but it has the very sounds of possible new engine needed as it could well be head gasket and overheated previous.

    What year and mileage.

    2010 170k miles

whats the cost of a second hand rebuilt engine ball park, would consider this route as the car is spotless,

paid 6500 for it , now i know why

Don't panic yet. Do engine compression and leak down test, then check if there is combustion gasses present in the coolant ( test strips) . Check pcv system , I think it's all under the intake. Those vw engines need frequent oil changes 8000k.

Don't throw parts at it. Do the basics first ffs

Google - any make/model - engine problems you'll get a result. Nothing can be diagnosed over the net , take the car to a competent mechanic and go from there.

    Where are you based ?

Navn but the car can be driven to a garage in Dublin if needed

EA888 1.8/2.0? The 2009-2011 built engines have a design fault with the piston ring groove oil drainage which results in high oil consumption. Many of these engines were repaired under warranty at some stage if they consumed more than 0.5 liters of oil per 1000 kilometers.

Bring it to LynnMac - Academy St, behind Maxol on Dublin Road. They are VW / Audi specialists.

I would agree with this, we use a special kit with different Mahle pistons and a redesigned oil control ring (better that the vw redesign) and it reduces oil consumption to 0

Changing to a heavier oil than 5w30 can reduce consumption.

5W40 Millers nanotech while expensive is good oil and worth trying before doing any expensive engine work.

If you see why they burn oil you will understand that a heavier oil will not help unfortunately. I posted pictures of a rebuild on one of these last year, i'll see can I find the pics again but basically the oil control ring drain holes are microscopic and always get plugged with carbon so the oil cant drain back into the sump and is forced into the cylinder, its poor design and nothing else.

    Edit: found pic

The VW design piston and rings:

The design we replace them with, more traditional:

I'm in the south but George Dalton is alot closer to you (Portlaoise) and may be able to help, although i'm not sure if he is into engine rebuilds.

For reference its a 3k+ job with us so certainly not something you would just do for fun. Get the car to a good mechanic and get it diagnosed and if it is the worst then deal with it as it comes.
