I was at a presentation of Darren Carthys last night and he sees very little to improve trade for at least six months, there's a surplus of last years lambs still around that will upset trade for the first six months of the year, there's still a lot of 25 - 30kg hill lambs that haven't been bought by feeders that won't be fit until may june. Consumption is reducing across Europe since Covid as well.
He also told us about a new Dairy farm that was offering 600/acre for ten years
Scanning man said scan rates not hectic and good few older farmers didn’t let out any rams while others won’t lamb til April. Could they be tight enough numbers late summer into September?
I thought that myself too, It could be a good year to keep lambs thriving to be selling july - september.
We've a good scan here, 1.5 in the ewe lambs and 1.9 in the adults, grass ran out here at mid mating and we fed .5kg cobs for the last 2 -3 weeks of mating
For interest, how many standard sized cobs would make a kg?
I wouldn't have a clue
You pulling the plug?
Alot of lad doing the same or getting out completely,..won't be many sheep in Ireland in the next 5-10 years.
Any live export of lambs out of here?
There was rumblings of lambs going out of rosslare to France, you would think there would be alot more considering therefore 2 euro a kg in the difference nearly 40 euro a head.
Was anyone at the sheep protest today?
The department are all about the Agri food industry. Farmers are only suppliers to these so the department won’t want to cause shortages of product for them to make profit on.
There is going to be some mass exodus of farmers over the next 10-15 years with retirements and no financial incentives for young successors to continue it. The EU will push most sheep and beef farmers into eco schemes and tie them into them schemes indefinitely like agroforestry re wetting etc. Any man that's left still farming out of pure pig iron come 2035 will be rewarded well then as food price will skyrocket once the globalists monopoly controls the worlds food supply. Its globalism at its best beat everyone down and out with cheap prices and regulations, gain a full monopoly and once that's got jack the price - Amazon, Uber etc its their business plans. The EU & US are only spokespersons for big global business and its so blindly obvious its grotesque.
I know its extremely hard for people to turn down the easy money eco schemes with less work as sheep and beef are in such bad positions at the minute. In my case I am going to pig it out ignorantly and eventually that pendulum will swing in our favor again, its a long play on my behalf but I have youth and plenty of ignorance on my side.
Fair play to you.
I can see a much faster exodus than that more like 3 years, numbers will be very much different than today's.
Jjameson ,You should be happy now, there's another new farm organisation going to be formed in Athlone on sunday

Any updated prices?
6.20

Bid 6.20 yesterday for Monday with the understanding 6.25 was available. Will ring again tomorrow as too busy this weekend to go.
6.30 icm camolin
€6.50 to 23kg in kildare,Ramadan on the 22nd,Easter on the 9th of April..God help us from the 3rd week of April!
It's the usual run up to Easter prices, I sold a pen of 25 store lambs this time last year into 170 euro still along way off but as you rightly say I'd expect a fall off a cliff come end of April early May
Total waste of time, store trade really fucked up this year because of meal an low prices. I would also have pity for anyone that early lambed and getting spring lambs to factory weight for Ramadan Easter. Unless someone has ample winter grass, there would be a savage amount of meal fed and at these prices would be running at a loss.
Hard to know how the next few years will pan out.
Aul fella has entered into Acres, I have serious doubts about it being honest. My personal opinion is that is designed in such a way to promote low input grassland by site reviews and basically the more money you get for growing wild weeds. This is fine on decent ground but doing this on marginal ground and or reclaimed land then it has the potential to really screw this land up. With the EU Bio Diversity regulation coming in 2030, this will mean that any land on drained peat soil must be rewetted and it will be a law. How will they get the farmers to do this willingly, well after 5 years in acres these soils will be practically be in terrible state and a new big fancy grant will be available for farmers to re wet, so alot may choose it is easier to take the easy money and rewet - this is an absolute no no IMO.
If farmers end up taking the easy few pound of the EU to rewet land, this land will be changed in the LULUCF charter much like forestry. This land can never be put back to grassland again and will be commercially worthless as it will not track any commodity price. If land is designated as forestry, then at least the land still holds some value as it will track the commercial price of timber. The EU carbon farming proposal does not link or allow for the carbon stored in the land to be sold/traded. This means rewetted land will be absolutely worthless as it cannot be used for anything else. Will farmers rewet a well maintained high index peat soil field worth circa €10,000/acre for 500 quid a year (that's not even index/inflation linked) and now that land is worth €0/acre.
Plus 1
Any word on lamb prices
6.80 all in for tomorrow Kildare .
Any word of what price is going ? Hearing 7 and above ??
7 icm camolin
I can’t remember rightly but wouldn’t spring lamb usually be opening €1/kg higher than hoggets ?
7 is for hoggets I'm nearly sure, report on the journal saying opening price for Spring lambs was 7.50 to 7.70.
If that's the case then that's piss poor money considering all the meal and work that would have gone into producing that new season spring lamb for Easter market.
