Pump Powered by battery

Tomjim

I have a river on my land, and somebody mentioned to me recently that it may be possible to insert a pump in the river, and power the pump via a battery. There is electricty on land but a long way from river. Anyone know if this is possible, and the costs involved, it would save on water rates, I only keep about 20 cattle on land so water demand would not be huge.

Also friend stated it could be possible to recharge battery with solar panel, similar to electric fencer recharged by solar panel. Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated

What about something like this:
http://www.lifewater.ca/ram_pump.htm
its called a ram pump or sometimes known as a hydraulic ram its a pump powered by water flowing through it. They have been around for years

you could use it to fill a header tank then supply the drinking troughs from that.
OR what about a solar powered pump they are popular in the US with people living "off grid"

If it has a bit of a fall you could simply fix a water pipe into the river with a simple filter or 7up bottle with holes drilled in it and run pipe into a header tank a bit down stream.
If its level then a ram pump would be best I think someone near kenmare does a coarse on making them cheaply from bits or pipe might also sell them.
A solar 12v pump would be a bit dearer or if you wanted to go the hole hog you could buy a small water turbine and prodoce electricty to run punp and battry fence

Buy a pasture pump. Most co-ops sell them. Spaldings in Athlone also sell them. www.spaldings.co.uk

I think it has a 200m maximum, but you would need to check it out to be sure.

Have a look at www.greenandcarter.com they are based in Somereset, England and are the only company in the UK that are still making ram pumps -been making them since the mid 1800's and still going strong!

Tomjim

Green and Carter in Somerset and Allspeeds near Birmingham both supply water rams , I have an old one that works fine and get any spares from green and carter , i think a new one costs about 1200 sterling

If you google homemade hydraulic ram pumps, you get loads of sites with plans to make one yourself, complete with expalnation of principles, videos etc.

Here's a good one http://www.clemson.edu/irrig/equip/ram.htm

it seems ok but better to use brass fittings , they will take the shock better ie ( the water hammer effect )

a ram pump can be home made wit a few plumbing fittings i have one working on my own river at home, but to work a ram pump u need to create a head of water , i done this by damming the river 3 foot high and bringing the flow on 200 foot in a 6 inch sewer pipe to get a head of water 5 foot high to work the ram pump ,for every foot of fall you get the ram pump will pump water 10 foot high
