Said I would stat this thread to allow people to post their taughts on beans
I will kick things off with my musing on Red eye from www.coffeebeans.ie I get these through Frenches cafe on cathrine street in Limerick City to which I try to make it in once a week. They stock many diffrent beans including FIXX which is great for me as I like to vary my blend from time to time. I decided to go with the red eye as they were out of fixx and I must say I am quite happy with the blend. The blend is roasted by a limerick roaster and they were delivered to the shop the day before I got my grubby little hands on them. They came in a brown bag much the same as Ariosa without the logo usaully Jessica will bag these in the more common silver bags with the one way valve on them before sale. So I get home and open the bag up to dump the contents into my airtight jar the first thing of note is that these are a very dark roast wiht plenty of oil on the surface of the bean so I poped some in my grinder and dialed in the grind and banged out a 15gm doulbe in 28secs nice thick mottled crema and a lovely taste with a bit of a bite at the tail. Look im not going to go into choclates and woodys I will just say I like the blend and will get it again.

Sorry about the spelling I jsut plain cant spell worth a damn

Great review... didn't know French's specialised in beans. Do they sell them over the counter, or do you have to buy from the site?

A small section from an upcoming review of Red Eye that I had written:

The first thing I thought was that this coffee smells like burnt coffee. Upon tasting it I agreed - it tastes like burnt coffee too, scorched in fact, acrid. As is often the case with coffee roasted to this degree, funny flavours came out in the oils. In this case I'd describe that flavour as gamey, a kind of wild animal, beast smell. On the coffeebeans website they say "This is a popular coffee and is for the coffee drinker looking for a strength and kick rather than taste". I'm not sure why you would buy a coffee without having regard for how it tasted. It strikes me as a macho coffee, drank out of empty bean cans by people who carry knives in their mouths cause their hands are full of dead animals. To me though it's unpleasant, over-roasted and out of place with modern coffee culture.

Perhaps the coffee is not for you much like a blend you would like would not be for me. I carry my knife im the pocket of my combat trousers not my mouth by the way and I have a bag for my kills. I think the comment of the website could be carried more that this belnd does not have some of the nuances of flavour that other blends may have but that does not mean it is a bad coffee would I rather another blend while this would not be top of my list I still think it has a place in my lader now and again. I did not find it acrid or burnt mayhaps you got a bad lot I cant comment on that I can only comment on the beans I have.

Over the counter they sell all the beans that are on coffeebeans.ie as far as I know.

I had that written for the last couple of weeks it was by no means in any way directed at you. Coffeebeans offer far better coffees than Red Eye IMO. But taste is a subjective thing, and I can appreciate that certain people like to taste "the roast" as opposed to "the bean".

Diaz as filter - if its fresh (ask) and you're into smooth, sweet, mild chocolate. Not at all suited to espresso though.

They obviously sell Fixx as well which is good, but can also be difficult to ascertain freshness on (c'mon Cafe de Cuba - take the plunge!).

This week I am drinking FIXX for my espresso . I love FIXX I think its a great blend there are only one or 2 ahead of it for me one been ristrettocoffee.co.uk's espresso blend and maybe the coffee I had while in Italy by a local roaster in the town I was staying. One thing I really don't like is the lack of roast dates on the bag. Now I know when they get into Frenches but I dont know when they were roasted. From the taste and pour I would say that they are not too old. So I got them Saturday Frenches must rebag FIXX from the lager kilo bags as they were in the silver single valve pack I mentioned in my previous post and not the bright orange pack one would usaully get FIXX in. So I loaded up the ginder poured a sink shot dialed in my grinder and away we went 25sec 90ml double in my spanky new cups nice globs of crema during the pour leaving a dark brown mottled creama on the top down which lasted for ever. The taste mooth with a litte of bittermess as an aftertaste I git a nutty taste during the shot which was excuisite needless to say I do like this as a blend but would like to see roast dates on the bag. Was think of ordering from http://londiniumespresso.com/ any one get anything from here before of so what do they suggest.
