I was thinking of changing our shoot this year to a knock out competition. This would be seperate from the IV league. We could call it the IV cup/shield/championship

For those that dont know what way the head to head goes. it's as follows

shoot 60 arrows qualification score in the morning. Everyone in the category is ranked first to last. Then in the afternoon archers shoot off in 18 arrow head to head matches. First against last, second against second last and so on. with the winner advancing to the next round.

From the quarter final on the matches would be 12 arrows.

the categories I was thinking of would be

    Male advanced
    Male Beginner
    Female Advanced
    Female Beginner
    Compound
    Barebow

    So what do poeple think??

Its a good idea, but personaly i think there are too many diffent sections for too little people. Why not put male and female together? This would make it a bit better. Are there enough people shooting barebow and compound for a sucessful knock out to be run?

I think there's enough male and female to have them as two seperate catergories. There's deffinitely not enough compound but what can you do?? It's the same in the nationals

Barebow could be put in with recurves. We could decide on a certain score (maybe 450) and if they've shot over that they're in the advanced section.

I approve. Head to head is good fun.

Would be interesting, go for it!

How many compounds are there? I know theres vachin, doogle and me - anyone else? If there was 4 of us you could do some kind of round robin thing instead of the knock-outs to keep it going as long as the recurves?

sounds like a good idea, also introduces people to a different format of archery and shows up who has shaky nerves. should be done

Cool, thats four of us then. Could probably come up with some competition format that will let us do the "qualifying" round and a few face offs in the knockouts, round robin or something like that.

Our IV will be on the 17th of February.

It will be the intervarsity cup or Shield (depending on what trophy I get:) )

There will be three sections, Advanced, Beginner and compound.

Barebow will be in either the advanced or beginnner section depending on score. Over 450 is in the advanced section on a 40cm face.

Because there's only four compounds I'll do a round robin system where they all shoot off against each other with the top two shooting off for the final.

This will be starting earlier than other competitions. Probably 1st group shooting 60 arrows at 9:30 and second group at 11/11:30. Then starting the knock out at 2.

All the head to heads will be 12 arrow matches with a one arrow shoot off for tied matches.

I might have to increase the cost for this competition to €10 per archer. To cover the extra cost of target faces and big shiny trophies:)

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Sounds cool. Might be a time issue with some people tryin to get there, but othr than that it seems sound enough.

anyone coming from dublin should be able to make it for 9:30. there's a bus that gets into carlow for 9. I'm sure some will be driving anyway or possibly coming the night before.

Whats the policy on guests? Would hate to miss out on the head to heads....

I'd have to wait until I see how many students we have before I'd know if there's room for guests.

I'd say there'll be room for 5 or 6 guests and have a round robin thing, the same as for the compunds.

It's two weeks before the nationals too so it'll be good practice for that.

I hate to labour the point and bring up old arguments, but is this fair on the BBs? Granted, I know in the IAAA shoots the BBs are in the same section as the recurves but at IV level we have always given them a section of their own to allow competition between them. Lets face it, against sighted shooters, either beginner or advanced, they really can't compete. Could there be a compromise that the BBs have a section but "advanced" BBs shoot on 40cms and "beginners" shoot on 60cms? That way they'll stay interested?

I think the face-2-face format for an IV is a great idea :D and gives us all a taste of competitive reality, but we have always streched the official rules at IV level to give the BBs something to fight for - can we do it for the Shield/Championship as well?

I think there should be a vote on it at the first IV in DCU.

    Presumably after the shoot?

There are at least 4 BB's coming from NUIG alone to DCU so the category wont be as small as it used to be.
