Current best value Android Huawei Ascend G300

Hi,

My Dad broke his HTC desire and I need to get him a new phone. I have seen this available in the North through Vodafone
Huawei Ascend G300

So I am going to get one of the lads at work to pick it up for me.
It looks a cracking phone for the price
Single core 1ghz
4" screen
and all the usual big battery as well.
ICS due in June/July and Huawei are pro active with updates.

What do you guys think
http://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_ascend_g300-4594.php

It can be unlocked for around 6 quid on ebay and it works. It can also be debranded with a rom form modoco.

Works out at 100 quid sterling plus the unlocking fee of 6 quid so 106 all in.

It actually seems better than the desire he had previously.

I doubt there will be any better than this phone at this price. phones at this price wont be able to match the specs of this one as far as i am aware.

My other half got one of these the other day. I was amazed at it for the price. Solid build, nippy and good screen.

There were a few reports online that the screen wasn't that responsive but I didn't notice that, and I use a 4S.

The call volume being quite low is a known bug with the Vodafone firmware but there's an update on Modaco with a patch for it and puts stock ROM on it. Took 5 minutes to do and no root needed.

It has a 2GB internal SD card, 800MB internal memory for apps and microSD slot.

She got hers in Newry. Phone was £100 plus £10 mandatory top up. You can use Vodafone UK top up on Vodafone IRE though so we gave it to someone on Vodafone.

I chanced my arm and asked the sale assistant what the story with getting the phone unlocked after reading on Modaco some people had success getting it unlocked for free in the Vodafone store. He said it shouldn't be a problem took her 48 SIM and unlocked it there. Was up and running with her Irish SIM before we left the shop. I did read that it depends on who you get in the store though, no harm asking. The unlock code can be got on eBay for £5-7 if you need it.

Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a budget phone. For around the same price down here you'd only get a Samsung Galaxy Y.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

You can't. Vodafone.co.uk will only deliver to the UK. You'll either need to:
  • Drive up to Newry
  • Get it posted to a friend/relative in the UK
  • There are some forwarding companies but I've never used any

Yeah I just see that but 22 euros is a bit too much.

Also driving 130 km one way to Newry is a bit too much.

Pity I have no relatives in UK/NI.

Tom

I think I will go and try to fix my HD2

Do you mind me asking what the agent looked like so I can see if he's working there tomorrow

Could any Dubliners picking up one of these collect one for me too

My desire was taken last week, the G300 looks like a good value replacement.

That's all well and good but this is a budget phone, it's by no means near the price of a SGS 3....
