Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I can't for the life of me understand how there could be any such thing as a golf betting market. I mean even at the height of Tiger Woods' dominance, it seems like madness to back any one player to win a particular event, it's just way too random

I think you're missing the bigger picture there... The odds reflect the randomness.

Some good money to be made on it, particularly in on PGA Tour events around the California and Florida events around the start of the year. A bit of research reveals a lot about course form etc.

I dont understand bookies. Thomas Bjorn limps in to the open after this weekend and they put him in at 40's.

He has better form than half the field (including Clarke). Bookies won't be long putting a 1 before his price after a bad start.

I have a couple of euro each way on Peter Uihlein at 66/1 this week in Scotland and he's 2nd at the minute. Now all I need for him is not to collapse in rounds 3 & 4 like he did at Carton House a couple of weeks back.

Have to say The Open betting is like the grand national in a way.
Look at last 10 opens. Would be very hard to pick any of them. Even Els at that time. Cink, clarke, likes of Curtis comes along, johnson was in the mix then Watson could have won it. It is a freak and nobody can call draw or weather.

Look at the likes of :
    Fisher
    Casey
    Donald
    Westwood
    Lowry
    Poulter
    Donaldson
    Lawrie
    Laird
    Mcilroy
    Mcdowel
    Rose
    wood
    Dyson
    etc. etc.

Just the Uk and Ireland lads, Nobody on here could say who will do well or even pick top 3 with 5 efforts of above.

Paddy Power loves it id say. Sure why do you think they pay 7.

In saying that I won on clarke. A bit of educated luck.

This is *not* a general golf chat thread lads.
Betting only, otherwise you are diluting the other tournament threads.

Please keep it to betting *only*, as per the First Post.

    Chat moved.

It is a freak and nobody can call draw or weather.

You can make educated guesses at the 'draw' (its not really a random draw obviously).
They are likely to stick with what they've previously done regarding pairings and timings, and the top players are unlikely to get a.m. or p.m. graveyard slots.

So if you fancy someone in the top dozen in the betting I think its safe to assume the draw won't be an issue. Weather is more of an unknown obviously, I think you just have to accept it as a potential gamechanger but to an extent that applies to every tournament.

forgot to go to the bookies this morning - think I'll leave it now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭AdpRo

My usual 2 for the majors, Jason Day and Lee Westwood, one of them will eventually repay my faith although Day's double bogey start doesn't help!

Also done Gareth Maybin at 300/1, way too big a price for someone who has shown decent form the last couple of weeks. Sergio as first round leader at 33/1.

For the outright win I have:

    Zach Johnson 80/1
    Dustin Johnson 40/1
    Henrik Stenson 40/1
    Luke Donald 30/1
    Sergio Garcia 25/1

I've got €1 on each as I decided I'd go a bit wild for this one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,975 ✭✭✭nkay1985

Have Scott @ 22/1, McDowell @ 25/1 and McIlroy @ 28/1 as my main bets. Then Harrington @ 66/1 and Oosthuizen @ 70/1 a bit smaller. All bets each way. From McIlroy, McDowell and Harrington if one of them is right they'll be challenging. Scott my main fancy but who knows.

Also backed Jimenez and Cabrera for first round leader at 100/1 each. Least Jimenez has given me a run for my money this morning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 72 ✭✭anamara86

    Have Poulter @ 66/1, Mickelson @ 18/1 and then Harrington (of course) @ 66/1

  • Registered Users Posts: 935 ✭✭✭pinkdoubleeagle

    Have Snedker e/w at 45-1

Saw PP are paying out Top 6, so did each way on Z Johnson and Donald. Hope it goes well.

Did Snedeker at 45/1 and Molanari at 125/1 last night both €10 e/w.

    Here's hoping..

If I miss the start (often do on the PGA) I wait till sat morning to see how it's set up. You lose a fair bit of value in placing once the first ball is hit.

hoping more than anything but would PP have any refunds on players withdrawn today?

I backed Mahan, Spieth, Stenson and De Laet pre-round. Backed Wiesberger and Bjorn in running. Best of luck to all.

grovel like hell, tell them it was your last fiver and you have nothing now.tell em your in negative equity, the balliffs are knocking night and day and the wife has left you for your brother.say she left 8 children with you under the age of 10 all with life threatning illness's and your dole is being refused.say you had to sell the car for half nothing to feed the childer but all thats left in the press now is 5 crusts of bread with mold on them and half a tin of beans.i can guarantee you,if you do all this, they will at least give you a free spin of the wheel in casino and who knows from there? This could be the moment that changed your life for the better,GO FOR IT!!!

P.S: More than likely they won't return said bet.

PP are refunding on Peter Hanson but not refunding on Oosthuizen.

they didnt refund on oosthuizen for the US open either - i was sickened when he withdrew after round 1 in Merion

Think it's down to PP discretion*, they don't need to refund on either.
Once they tee off on the 1st hole it's fair game.

*I'm guessing the refund on Hansen will be classed as some form of PR, I'd say the bets wagered on him were minimal in the grand scheme of things.
Refunding on Oosthuizen might have been too costly for a bit of PR.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 576 ✭✭✭Fishyfreak

PP posted on twitter that refunding on Hanson was a "goodwill gesture".

As mentioned above, there would have been a fair chunk of money on Oosthuizen so would have been too costly i reckon.

Powers return millions in bets regularly so I doubt they are too exposed to oostie. I would get on to their website and live chat with them. If you ask nicely they can give you a matching free bet if you are lucky and they are in a good mood :)

They return millions, but they don't return millions without a lot of thought going into it.
I doubt there were too exposed to oostie, I'd be worried if they were.
They plan refunds as PR stunts, they are calculated and measured, they don't operate an open pot for people with hard luck stories to dip into.

You won't lose anymore by asking I suppose.

Still have Mahan and Stenson in the running. Stenson played beautifully tee to green today for the most part, but couldn't buy a putt.

    Westwood = Lay.

Hoping for a return on the e/w portion on one of them.

As I said in the main thread, I have a sneaky fancy for Sneds, given his 2 sub-70 rounds and his fondness for coming from way back to win tournaments.

Throwing a cheeky tenner on him now at 100/1, so I'll be in it with you

I really hope Westwood does it today.

Switched on BBC at 11 o'clock, but still no sign of live golf.....all sorts of interviews etc. Yawn.

Edit: Oops, just copped there is live golf on the red button....sorry BBC. Coverage has actually been great.

Got my iPad to back Poulter following his eagle - birdie. Had him selected at 40/1 but by the time I went to confirm he was into 22/1. He's now 16/1. On some run!
