Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just noticed a comment in that thread about someone hating LED mods.

Are LEDs to pins as LCDs are to cabs? :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,790 ✭✭✭Jack burton

Ah not as clear cut, of course everyone has their opinion but LEDs are pretty good.

They dont use as much power, run cooler, brighter, more colours (aswell as a white that actually white) last longer etc.

i'd say 90% of games that have been restored or serviced will have LEDs in them somewhere

    LCDs are the devil!

Some people make a mess using coloured leds.
The dont fade in and out like bulbs either .
    This reminds me,
fitted a new woofer in WhiteWater and Getaway tables.
As you can see the one in the getaway was a bit rough

I agree with keith, I did a cp printed before and turned out pretty good. Printer named some vinyl they use on floor or something but I forget it was a few years ago

Sorry should have mentioned, i have Silverline overlay to go on over it.

What to put under it to future proof?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,146 ✭✭✭CathalDublin

Tallaght powdercoating would probably powder coat it cheap enough
    Otherwise
    Prime
    Sand
    Prime
    Sand
    Prime
    Sand
    Paint
    Sand

I wouldnt bother spraying it if i was putting that over it. just sand it down, clean it off and put the overlay on. I never painted any of mine if they where being covered over.

Putting the overlay on i use a spray bottle with water and a drop of washing up liquid, spray the back of the sticker and put it on. then i have one of these (Link below) i got off a friend of mine that works in a printers, he uses these the whole time they do huge wall murals and this is how they apply them. use this to rub out any bubbles under the sticker. because its wet underneath you can move it around and re-apply it if needed.

I usually line it up then with a blade cut holes where the buttons and joystick go so i can rub the bubbles out at the these holes too if needed.

    Thanks Guys,

Just worried that for longevity the underside will rust like the previous one that was there.

I'll see can I get it over to Tallaght Powder Coating and get a price. Definitely not doing it manually Cathal as mentioned :O

And Keith that looks great now, thanks for the Squidgey tips.

Did i make the overlay or metal control panel?
Got the metal bent to the same size and shape of previous CP for €10 then drilled myself using template. Will look good hopefully when i get overlay on.
Should have went with better joysticks/buttons. Virgin decisions.

Did they weld on joystick mounts or are you going to bolt on?

No joystick mounts, any thoughts on that?
I was going to counter sink but its thin metal.

Yes plastic buttons was a bad choice. Lesson learned, not difficult to change.

    I'd mark the spots,
    drill the holes
put the bolts in from the top then mig weld them in on the top.
the grind them off with a grinder.
bit of work but its worth it!

Urbanledges method is probably the simplest and strongest solution - if you've access to a welder that is.

I use a small pointed-tip on the iron, & a small sewing needle then to prise the leg of the chip up, works fine

Yeah initially it can seem quite small & awkward to get at, the ppu pins are even finer but there's better access to them I find

I got a VB off Urbanledge a while back, and he fixed the lens glitching by using the oven trick. About 10 - 12 months later, one of the lens started acting up again, so I took it apart and did it myself, all good.

From reading a bit on the Planet Virtual Boy forums, it seems that the ribbon cables on these sensors can be permanentely soldered into place, and continuing to heat the glue to refix the ribbon can eventually destroy the join.

I was talking with a guy in Holland, who will do the solder fix for me for €25, plus €11 to send them back registered post. While mine is back working I plan on sending them to him in the New Year to get it sorted for good.

If anyone ever wants to use him to get this done, pm me and I'll forward on his details.

Just came across this guys blog. Looks like he mods the Nes and N64 actual games. No idea how he does it but looks good.

Some really cool stuff like making Peach Castle in Super Mario64 a multiplayer map in Goldeneye. Give it a whirl!

Can't fecking wait to give it a go!

How fast to you want the autofire ? Its about 3 per second now but can run faster.

Really need to get a new microswitch for the trigger though, current one is very intermittent...

This calls for accuracy! /breaks out the metronome :D

I'm just trying to work out the ROF for the submachine gun in Time Crisis 3 from this video.

You have rapid fire from the very opening of the game. (and this guy is using it from the start)

It seems to be about 6 per second?

Hey guys, I'm looking to pick up a modded Mega Drive... or have my own one modded. I've switched to 60hz on my SNES and NES games and playing 50hz, bordered Mega Drive games now just feels wrong. Just wondering if anyone here could point me in the right direction towards somewhere I could get it done?

I've checked out the DIY videos online but I've got no technical skills at all and I'd rather not destroy a nice Mega Drive by trying myself :-)

We have a whole forum devoted to the topic of console modification,
Services are also in there so you can hook up with a person of skills to do the work for you.

Prob won't find too many modders in there of retro consoles Cidey, in fact that thread & forum have died off big time in recent months/years.

The guy that was doing the mod was charge €120 a board which is fairly excessive and from reading various threads it wasn't all he's own work either that he was charging for.

So ya the bios and flasher utility are now available on the interwebby. Must buy a suitable eprom now and give it a try.

So, you just get the existing BIOS flashed with the modded one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,725 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

    Pretty much.

If you've a stock bios on it you need to (temporarily) install an EPROM with the new bios on it and when it boots the new bios is permanently written to the GNET.

The ERPOM can now be removed and passed on to the next GNET :)

It's a 2009 version that's been released. The paid for version is 2011 so not entirely sure how much extra goodness is the newer version.

Pretty great coverage of this on the Nintendo forum here.
It seems plain though, bricks and mortar are charging a 12.5% tax of a sort over online vendors.
