Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Loving OAC perfection by the way. Everyone should get their hands on it. Unreal beading, brilliant shine and no need for wipers on the motorway. :D

Thanks for this, got the last one in Liffey valley. Good value at 1 euro but I would in my arse pay 16 euro for it normally.

Any Halfords i've gone too have been cleaned out too.

Tesco have JML Mantis cloths 2pk for a fiver. One is an applicator and one is a buffer. The buffer is not bad..

Put it this way, the quality doesn't scream 16 euro at all. 10 euro at most really. Anymore and I'd be getting a decent mf

Was in a €1.50 store the other day and picked up some cheapy stuff

Wheel cleaner is non acidic (possibly heavy alkaline. havent tested yet)
Carpet cleaner is ok. for 1.50 i cant complain really

These microfibres intrigued me. Really really plush n thick but tag says 100% microfibre.
Surely it should be a polyester/polymide mix or sumthin

Got a bucket, sponge and bottle of car shampoo in Halfords for 4.50. The bucket and sponge are grand but I'd imagine the shampoo is crap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,720 ✭✭✭Hal1

Get a second bucket to use as a rinse bucket. That way you're wash mitt is always using clean water.

Fair enough, but I still don't think I'd trust something so cheap supporting a car....especially one I'd be getting under.

There's no way the RAC would put their name to something that might fail.
It looks very similar to the Halfords one and that's fine once used for its intended use.

Wouldn't use a blade to dry car as you could scratch it, i have a dedicated towel for drying which is awesome:

There is no forgiveness if a bit of grit happened to get stuck between the paint and the water blade.....you're going to get scratched paintwork.
With the pile on the microfiber drying towels, it is more likely to be drawn into the pile and away from the paintwork! ;)

There's cleaning stuff in Aldi either next Thursday or the one after, forget which one. Just a heads up :)

I actually went out and bought a blade in... Halfords I think...

Anyway, I remember spending a couple of Euro on it, as I seen the lads in the local car wash using one on my car before. I used it once and found it's 'drying' ability was not great and I wasn't overly fond of rubbing a toughened silicone hard-edge against my paintwork. So after actually having used it one time, I put it into the shed, never to be used again.

That microfibre madness towel that was linked to by theboinkmaster is the one I have, also. Paying over €20 for a towel is an extremely bitter pill to swallow. I was on the verge of tears paying €20 for a towel. But, I must say, it's one of the best purchases I've made. It's drying ability is shockingly good, and drying a car was the stage that I hated more than anything else, until I got it.

I used to spend nearly 20 minutes going around the car using microfibre clothes form Homestore and more. A frustrating experience, to say the least. Now it's a 2 minute, handy job, with that towel. I'd highly recommend it. But if I were you, I'd just buy it quickly. Cos if you sit there thinking about it, and trying to justify it, you'll never buy it. You really do have to have it in your hands before you can appreciate how good it is and how much time it saves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 996 ✭✭✭bbari

You have sold it to me. Thank you :)

Another shout out for the Microfibre Madness Dry Me Crazy. It took me a while to shell out for one of these. I was using 2x Kent Drying Towels from B&Q which were ok but not great.

The Dry Me Crazy soaks up a hell of a lot of water and as such meant i was able to dry the car faster.

Lidl sell microfibre towels that are absolutely perfect for drying the car

You'll find them in the section with their cleaning products

They're in a packet labelled as window cleaning cloths and they're cheap

The quality is fine and they're better than many of the much more expensive "proper" ones

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

No towel Ive used, and thats quite a lot, has a patch on Microfiber Madness Dry Me Crazy! Soft and flush, and will dry a large family saloon without having to ring it out.

The mircrofibre wash mitt that they have is really good. Ive mine a year, in regular use and its great. Cuts down the time it takes to clean the car as well I find. At first I baulked at the price, it seems expensive but after using it the first time, I wish Id bought it a year previously when I started washing my car properly:cool:

You'll find a lot of people here use the 'Dry Me Crazy' towel with the 'Incredimitt', as, not too long ago, there was a group buy thing on, where they were sold together as part of a package deal.

(therefore a lot of us would have that particular towel and that particular mitt).

Both are great products, though, and worth their price tag. I have a fair few mitts, from Halfords to Tesco, costing from €2 to €15 and the incredimitt is definitely built better than the others I have (it seems to have a thick foam lining that not only absorbs water, but also helps it keep it's shape).

A lot of my other mitts seem to have collapsed in on top of themselves and are a bit difficult to use.

That said, I do still have 2-3 cheapo mitts around, as I avoid generally using the incredimitt on the arches or 'under' the car (any part of the car facing downwards, along the bottom, at the bumpers, side skirts, etc. ) where there is likely to be very heavy soiling.

    But that's just me.

Halfords have the autoglym shampoo on offer at 6 euro for 1L. Buy 2 and get 1 free on it as well. Decent shampoo at that 4 euro a litre :D
You need to reserve it online though, says the deal isn't available in store

Do you rule out a chamois for drying off the car?

I wouldn't use one on car paint. If there are any debris, small pieces of grit etc on the panel you'll just drag it along, whereas with a microfibre you reduce this risk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

As said, chamois are far from ideal for drying the car. What you want is a microfiber drying towel that is soft and has a long pile, so anything on the surface that could scratch your paintwork, is more likely to embed into the pile....where as with a chamois, it has nowhere to go except, between your paintwork and chamois...same applies for a sponge; a wash mitt is what should be used.

    Curran,

    Many thanks for your advice,

I got the following from DetailingShed (Dave been very helpful)

    Dry Me Crazy Drying Towel,
    845 Sealant,
    Glossworkz Shampoo,
    Crazy Pilr buffing microfibre
    and a sealant applicator.

Got the car washed over the weekend and applied the 845. I know the car is new but still 845 made such a difference, waiting for rain to see the beading :). The car is like a mirror now!

Dave sent me this link, fellow detailers can have a look at this.. :)

    http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/how-articles/40243-collinite-845-definitive-how-guide-legendary-wax.html

Towel is great, worth every cent. I didn't RTFM, didn't pre wash the towel before drying so the fluff was all over, anyway, gave another wash and it was fine then :)

As you advised, I won't apply the polish just now and wait for 5/6 months ?

The tyres look a bit dry, any recommendation on the tyre dressings ? Someone advised to mix water in the motor oil but i don't think its right thing to do!!

Any other advise to stay on the top of things?

    Thanks again Curran.

    BB

For tyre dressing, a lot of people swear by Orchard Autocares Tyre Glitz, i like, its easy to apply and leaves a good shine

  • Registered Users Posts: 373 ✭✭Spike Witwicky

Meguiars Endurance gel is a decent tyre dressing. Fairly durable too. After applying it just dont drive anywhere for an hour or two as it can sling onto the wheels and body when wet.
