Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I only put it online to recieve the 20 year old games that cost me nearly €100 (launch price v new price) :D

I was keeping it stock in the hopes of any future exploit requiring early firmware etc...ah well. Not that piracy would be a concern for the 3DS anyway...there's fugg all to pirate! :p

Interesting article that. Is it inconceivable to suggest that the 3DS and Vita could end up being flops for various differing reasons? Too pricey, lack of quality titles, smartphone juggernaut has changed the playing field?

yep. composite video was soldered in place where it should be composite sync. Spent 2 days trying to sort that out!

    Hands off Bayonetta fantasies!

She is a girl who definitely, definitely went to Specsavers!

    What's with that anyways?

I become absurdly frustrated the time a guy from work tried to tell me Bayonetta was just a **** Japanese button basher. Some people just don't get the transcendent joys of that game (easily the best of this console generation). And all this from a guy who frequently claimed Dragon Age Origins was the best game in years.

Mustn't have played Oblivion or Fallout 3 then, poor backstard.

6 seconds in says it all for me, though maybe 'social-gaming' has just become a buzz word that they're latching onto who knows. The product itself looks very nice, very polished & very Sony...I can still see it wiping the 3DS off the face of the planet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

    My proposed dictionary entry:

    social·gaming

    [sow-shall gay-ming] impersonal pronoun -shovelware
    1. Industry buzzword for video games of no particular interest to anyone other than those with the IQ of a bubble in a malteaser. Compare shovelware ( def. 2 ).
    2. The majority of games for the Nintendo Wii (ref. shovelware).

Just stumbled upon this from SEGA, I hope a console port is happening!

    Border Break

Arcade only for now though unless anyone knows some good news about it?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,723 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I vaguely recall playing or at very least watching Border Break in an arcade somewhere. I'm pretty sure I didn't like it - had the same flaws of most contemporary third person arcade games. Over complex controls, ludicrous HUDs etc... I might be getting it mixed up with something else, but I don't remember being enamored with it anyway.

This arrived today. Limited edition version of Karous for the Dreamcast.

    NTSC-J
SG-OCD (semi-sealed. the original shrinkwrap is still with it only carefully opened so as to retain it)

This edition is rare as a raw steak as it comes with a limited edition Karous phonecard (which is still SG-OCD and in a protective sleeve).

This game has been on my list for a while! :)

I found Karous to be rubbish to put it kindly. I really hate all of Milestones games.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Each to their own. I think it's a great game, better than a lot of newer titles on other platforms that came after it. Maybe the Wii version on the Milestone compilation is just not a good one?

I played the Dreamcast version. Thought it was a terribly derivative bullet hell shooter with nothing to help it stand out and a total lack of any good well designed bullet patterns. With how many quality shooters there are on the dreamcast I'd count it and Milestones previous game Radilgy as two of the worst on the system. It's no Under Defeat that's for sure.

Yes he was involved with Akai Katana. Such a terrible loss, and so young too.

    Here's a (complete?) discography.

HAH! Good work, I'd love to get that game. I have Ketsui (and no NTSC-J XBOX 360...yet) but making do with DS Death Label for now.

Oh and p.s. I got a few more SHMUPS today. I'll post tonight. One of them is a cheeky little scamp by Toaplan. :D

I'm in the process of getting one (yep, not saying which :pac:). Seeing Espgaluda running on ondafly's cab made my mind up to go the 360 route, that and the original PCBs are silly money.

What would a 'special one' set you back? Don't care on condition, could have been kept in a toilet for all I care. So long as you can throw an NTSC-J disc in and play it that's all I want.

I think it depends on the chipset and whether it comes with a HDD etc. Not really sure on the different setups you can get. Either way, it's quite a bit cheaper than importing a new one from play-asia I reckon.

straight answer ? €130 for my one. didn't include a HD. Downside is, they are in limited numbers now, so might be hard to find one. Checkout console modding section (of Enternow fame) and go from there.

These are jtagged consoles we're talking about right? Basically standard 360's with a modified dash (digital signature checks removed) so you can play any region disc, use any hard drive you want, or play games direct from hard drive if you so wish, amongst other things.

The console needs to be dash 7371 or lower in order to jtag it, which is why they're getting kinda scarce these days. Obviously they will need to be kept away from XBL, & if you so wish you can also have an internal sata mod done. What this means is the standard dvd drive is removed, & in its place goes a 3.5" hdd of any capacity. You have usb/ftp access for content, & say goodbye to loading times.

    Here's one of mine

    Good shmups, crappy controls!

Most of them are imports. You can get the Parodius and Gradius collections - all terrific games. There's Darius Burst, which is a new entry in the series in purty widescreen. But be warned - the controls are really badly compromised! If you don't mind, they're worth a gander.

Where would a person find a pre modded xbox 360 for sale like that one.
It would be perfect for my cab to play imports and what not.

Or is it still a bit legally dodgy to get them?

There's nothing illegal in itself about a jtagged console, its what they can do with a bit more work that brings legalities into it. Much the same as a bread knife in that respect :p

Our good cmods had the open mindedness to allow me run a trial thread, where users can buy & sell modified consoles (within set limits). So if you want to keep an eye here, they come up regular enough so far - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056209509

Finding one that has the internal 3.5" mod done will be rarer again, but that can always be done at a later stage. Getting a jtagged console, or at least an exploitable one is the hard bit. There's no real essential need to have the internal drive mod done, but it does allow better cooling of the gpu, the data is on the sata bus & not the usb bus so loading will be faster, the drive will be powered by the console (no need for an external psu), & its basically an an all in one box solution. As I said, get getting the jtag comes first, the mod can always be done later on.

Cheers. I see someone has a Xbox 360 slim up there. I didn't think you could mod that one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

I think the slim is doable now is it not? I'm looking at an Asian 360 now. Apparently they play NTSC-J (99.95) and PAL so it's like having a multi-region XBOX and a UK power supply!

Might be worth sourcing a Japan insider if not, seeing as you can get a slim there now for €80.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,182 ✭✭✭ondafly

that slim has a modified dvd drive - so can play backups. Don't think its running a jtag exploit though ?

I think its also fair to say, that those of us with these in cabinets, is more for the fact we can install games onto the HD , and not having to open the cab up constantly when changing/swapping discs, but also the benefit of being able to purchase imports, without requiring another xbox !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

Exactly, the slims can have the firmware on the dvd replaced with custom firmware...this won't change the region of the console, but it will allow the obvious. Your also still restriced to MS hard-drives, & only 16GB external drives.

The jtag is a different mod altogether. Its essentially total control over the console, multi-region, any hard drive etc etc. To mirror ondafly, if your gonna want a 360 in your cab, a jtag is really the only way to go if yo uwant to avoid changing discs etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,885 ✭✭✭Steve X2

Cheers guys, Jtag it is for me so.

I had a few older 360's around that I thought were ok to be modded but they all have the newer firmware (must have updated them at some stage).
