after switching to the go run rides 3 myself and am finding them great for easy runs , long runs and tempos. Find them a bit strange when doing intervals for some reason I cant put my finger on.

Might be the sole is a bit soft? I'd forgotten I noticed that at the start.

yes I have the go run 2 and really like them but for speed / racing a certain level of rigidity in the sole is better.

I'm having trouble finding a pair of shoes that suit me. Started off last year with a pair of Asics GT-2000. I wasn't doing very much running (maybe 10 miles a week max), but wore them to the gym a lot. They were ok, but I earlier this year I started taking running more seriously and decided it was time to try something new. Went to a running shop and got fitted, turns out I my shoes were a size too small. Ended up walking out with a pair of Brooks Adrenaline. They felt good in the shop. I've tried several times to run in them and have never really taken to them. It feels like I'm running in high heels, and my legs just feel really tired after wearing them. I've gone over on my ankle one or twice in them. I've tried wearing them in but still no better.
Then I bought a pair of these: http://www.asics.ie/running/products/gel-super-j33-men/ and I love them but as my runs started getting longer (10 miles +) I felt I needed something with a bit more in the heel (possibly just because I'm heel striking more as my legs get tired towards the end of my longer runs). They are also starting to fall apart a bit after about 230 km (rubber on the heel of one shoe is starting to come off and the upper is starting to rip around the toe box, just below the laces on the other). All that being said I still love to run in them.
I found it hard to find a pair of my original GT-2000s (I didn't like the V2) so I found a pair of GT-1000s which also felt great in the shop. Have been trying to break them in, but I got blisters on my first run in them. I tried wearing them walking around a bit more but now, whether walking or running I get a pain in the arch of my left foot, like something hard is pressing in to it.
I've been up on a treadmill and was told I only overpronate very slightly, but because my arches tend to flatten when standing, I have been recommended to wear stability/motion control shoes - but I don't really like them.
I currently also have issues with sore hip flexors/IT band/knee on the right leg which I'm working through (very slowly). I'll probably stop running for a bit, because its just to sore at the moment. These issues started after a particularly hilly 10 miler which I wasn't ready for at the time, and have been exacerbated by me being to stubborn/stupid to stop running.
I have come to the conclusion that I have no idea what I'm doing shoe wise. I was hoping someone might read this and be able to give some advice. Sorry if I've posted in the wrong thread.

It sounds like your getting conflicting advice.

Your arch should flatten under load, it acts like a spring. If properly functioning and you are overpronating slightly then either a stiff neutral shoe or a suitable mild guidance shoe is what you need.

Figuring off the Super J33 something like the Mizuno Inspire should work nicely for you. Mild support, nice and flat internally allowing your arch to work, yet rigid enough in the heel to support the Achilles area too.

Faas 200r's added to the collection was a toss up between them and Piranha SP4's, both at sub 50 yoyos in an outlet over here.
Took them on a hot and humid 7.5 miles straight out of the box, beautiful, think I'm going to enjoy these.

Are Avia decent. The Mrs is in the market for a starter pair. Anyone know how they fit size wise (ie get half a size too big etc?)

Have a pair on order. A big fan of the Triumph 10's not so much of the 11's

Got a new pair of Pegasus 31 after having a couple of pairs of 29 and 30.

First reactions were not great. They don't seem as comfy for some reason but I will hold judgement till I have about 50 miles done in them.

My, what big feet you have! :D
Looking at the Adios 2 Boost (as a next marathon shoe) - but they're pretty damn expensive

The Puma collection (a few of the kids in there also)

Rotating Saucony Ride 7, Adidas Boston 4 and Brooks Pureflow 2. Saucony Virrata for very very occasional use. So an 8mm drop, 11mm, 4mm and a zero... Am I safe in presuming this is not a good thing? Should they be rotated a certain way or matched to particular runs? Is it better in general to stick to a particular heel toe drop?

I'd just be careful on the zero drops if you don't want an injury if you're not using them that much and not used to them- i.e. not using them for a month and then going out for a long run could be a very bad idea! (so much tougher on the calves and achilles). It's a personal thing of course but I have given up on 0mm drops as don't use them that much and could only do a short run (5k) without hurting the calves in that case (not being used to them). 4mm I'm fine with.

Thanks BB I wasn't aware if that site. They look like 2's as the 3 has a reflective flick near the little toe on the upper. It's the 3 I want as I had tried on a gorun 3 at vmlm expo, some people had issues with the 2's

I had a bad experience with some pure drift's I purchased off T'Internet after liking the pure cadence so i don't want another unused pair under the bed

I think I want the ride as they have more cushion than the gorun and I was going to use them for long runs, anybody have experience of both?

GoRun Ride 3 now available for £33: http://www.sportpursuit.com/catalog/product/view/id/578375

After upgrading from these to go run ride 4 at the weekend. Must say I cant see myself changing to anything else. Having worn asics, nike, brooks; have found skechers are the shoe for me. So comfortable! Way less achilles problems since I started wearing them. Think its the lack of a heel counter that does it. Whats the bets they go and change evrything for the next version!

these look cool but are fairly sh1t for running. the sole is rock solid and don't seem to changing much with break in. oh well, needed a gym shoe in any case.

got a pair of go run ride 3 - really like them. had the go run before. not much heavier really and more cushioned. feel nice and light on the feet.

Got three pairs on amazon for 140 euro. Great value when you could be forking out almost 200 notes for the likes of kayanos

Interesting design by Reebok... Looks very similar to lots of other styles out there with the signature 4mm/heat molded upper, flexible etc etc.

Let us know how they feel/fit and perform..

Picked up a pair of Brooks ST5 as I've been looking for a marathon shoe. I ran a long MP session in them straight out of the box on Saturday and they were fantastic. I was surprised by the amount of support too, I reckon I would even be able to use them as a general training shoe eventually.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,180 ✭✭✭Bahanaman

Brilliant shoe! Ran two marathons in them last year. Have thought about using them as a training shoe but reckon they might be a little on the skimpy side!

bought a second pair myself. gorun ride 3 manages to feel light but with nice cushion. 8oz for size 9. 4mm drop. you can leave out the provided insoles if you want to get more road feel. already one of my favourite shoes ever. apparently they are durable also - saw a review after 400 miles on t'internet somewhere.

as I was saying in my previous post, would not recommend these reeboks - the sole is very unforgiving - really really hard and after about 30 miles it hasn't really softened up to any extent. they also feel not-so-light on the feet. would not recommend, unless you like a rock-solid feeling!

Can anyone recommend shoes for a total beginner?

I get shin splits easily and am wondering if any one shoe can possibly help; or is it just a matter of training until it stops being a thing?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,139 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

For a beginner the thing to do would be to go to a specialist running shoe shop like Amphibian King or Runhub and have them recommend a shoe. There is really no perfect shoe for everybody.

As regards your shin splints this is not necessarily caused by your shoes, but if it persists you should probably see a physio.

Go get yourself fitted for runners, no good anybody advising you on runners as they dont know if you need neutral or stability runners. If your in Dublin you cant go wrong with Amphibian King. They also have a store in Oranmore if your based in the West. Would be inclined to stay away from Elverys, Lifestyle and the likes, they would not have an extensive knowledge really.

Update: Two runs in the sequence boosts. Great cushioning. The boost system does seem to do what adidas claims it does. Nice and soft and good energy return. The sequence being a support shoe is not really designed for out and out speed and I used them in a tempo for their maiden voyage! I just couldn't wait any longer to give them a spin! They still felt good but I'd not be using them for that type of run again. Tonight I took them out for a slow run and they were great. They will be my workhorse from now on. Again lovely cushioning and plenty of protection from the rough road surfaces around where I live.

    Any Brooks fans?
I started in the Brooks Glycerin 10 and loved them, got a pair of 11 then as a result after testing them out and getting gait monitored again. Found them slightly bigger so would get blisters on the side. Found a very reasonably priced pair on Amazon so in Sept switched from the 11 back to these 10 for the marathon and training weeks in the lead up to it and noticed from these that I'd have sore soles but felt perfect out running. I noticed on the weekend that these are the only ones left with bounce so need to start my research for next pair to start alternating. The 12's seem to be the same fit and size as the 11's, any recommendations for a neutral runner for either Brooks or beyond? Am advised 'perfect arches' if that helps.
    Thanks

I went from Brooks Ghost 6 to Saucony Ride 7. They are nice as well but a smaller heel to Toe drop(8mm) when compared to the Brooks.

could say i'm a brooks fan.

pair of pure drift for 5/10km races
    pure flow for similar
ravenna mixed up with Ghost 6 for easy runs/long runs

the ghost 6 replaced a ghost 5 which reached EOL.. Pureflow will be the next to go and will be replaced with the same again.

the ghost probably my favourite of the lot, it's jsut a workhorse of a shoe. i have kinvara's as well and i like some things about them more than the pureflow. the pure drift aren't far off the kinvara but not run enough in them to really have a feel for them yet
