Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

We as a forum are happy to help with research projects etc. whenever it's appropriate.

It's the particular time of night where it hits hardest of all for some, I include myself there. Feel a bit weird on new thread too, irrational but that's true to form for me really..

Oh you're not gatecrashing at all. Welcome aboard - all welcome here.. What has you feeling lonely?.

Oh just my whole life haha..I mean I know I'll get out of the many pickles I'm in, or at least the main ones - well maybe I'm kidding myself actually but yeah :( The main thing is the anxiety/depression issues which I'm sure are nowhere near as bad as others experience here - it arises from severe sleep deprivation which I'm finally getting to grips with now (I let it slide so much that I've not been able to actually THINK about what to do..I really didn't want medication clashing with my personality and making things worse and/or permanent in many ways). The anxiety is the worst because it's all consuming at the time but the depression is obviously very dulling..bringing out all fears very irrationally sigh.. I'm also lonely anyway because I've wasted so much of my life so far and only had one or two genuine friendships/relationships. Even then, I still feel lonely out of fear there's only so far I can go with them at this point until I have to sort myself out in so many ways..otherwise what works in our friendship now won't come automatically quite soon down the line. I'm just a very over the top person, yet have nothing to show for that mindset really..timing and mentioned illness has had most to do with it, but still....I want so much and I'm running out of time - I was it was 5, 10 or even 3 years ago. I want so many unconventional things yet the thing that has got me down the most so far in my life was the most conventional thing of them all..love..and with a very conventional person too. Suffice to say I messed up the relationship before it had even started and I'm a tiny dot in her memory now. Not sure where I'm going with this. That was a rambling mess. Sorry..kinda pointless :o

This is exactly the right place to let that out though.. I also think that my head state has messed up a lot of friend and relationships along the way over the years. At the moment I seem to be physically functioning on autopilot, while my mind agonises over mistakes and what can possibly become of me.. As you said in different words it's kind of a state of paralysis after a while which is hard to break out of..

Agreed, though I've realised that the reason my sleep issues and the associated more complicated issues have gone on for as long as they have (I feel really old at 25 now as opposed to 23 when they were starting) is because I was ridiculously immature for my age and clueless. I still am in so many ways, I really am an odd sort, but now I have an idea of how to really get to grips with it (though I know it'll be tough facing it head on, especially at first). What I'm trying to say, and don't think I've been at all successful in arriving at, is to not waste any time no matter how bad things are...I know that is so much more easily said than done, and I hope I don't come across as some preachy "Hey look at me I've seen the light now..come on everyone what's your hold up" type...but however we feel, that's the fact/s. Life isn't for or against us, it just is, all I can speak from is personal experience and admittedly as a bit of a hardheaded type who would have a "I'm going to tackle this hard and make it go down fighting" attitude, but now more than ever I feel one of the most important if not the most important thing in life is hope..if there is no hope, we just got to build something step by step no matter what it is, that taps into our self worth especially...if you can at all, please don't waste another second (not saying anyone intentionally does, at all, trust me I know the feeling and am still in the thick of it, but from today I really want to just live...even if none of my dreams never come true, I HAVE to find the good in today somehow...even if the possibility of being around people who kind of scare me (especially their culture/s) forever frightens me, there has to be good in today..no matter how patchy my memory is because of the sleep issues..got to find something in every day.

God I've always been rambly but this is a mess..apologies

Ugh the medication stuff is a nightmare, I've finally found something that doesn't make feel like I'm missing something else if that makes sense.
I know about sleep deprivation, I haven't slept properly in 10 years. Been on a trip/holiday a week now, left at 6am after an hour of sleep and have averaged 3 hours night a sleep since then despite camping and drinking. People assume "still" being asleep at noon is just being lazy. :P

EDIT: Where I am it's an hour later than the time of this post. Going to sleep at a sensible time isn't my strong point. :P

Heh, just read your posts elsewhere, stupid amount of coincidence. :P
I'll be 26 soon, not worried about that but 4 months later I'll be in my late 20s. :P
All my friends have moved away. They're out of college a few years with rubbish degrees but in a perfect industry. They're all gone while I have a degree in an area that I'll eventually have to move away if I'm gonna go down that path.
What's your work situation? What do you mean about different "cultures" if you don't mind my asking?

I know it's an annoying, perhaps patronising cliche, and I clearly don't know your situation which is completely unique to you but in general terms I do think the sleep thing can be solved in many more cases than happens..I mean most people with serious sleep issues eventually...eventually...get to a better place but never anywhere near perfect. What I've heard, and believe through 2 years solid experience, is that despite it being near impossible to implement (I'm gonna give it a go though! :P), the 'stategy' with sleep (not including other permanent medical conditions that may have an impact, I'm not any use there sorry) is to join all the dots simultaniously, and consistently...there has to be a start to a sleep plan, it has to remain in place, and there can be no faulting (hence the near impossible bit). What I mean is you have to have exactly the same bedtime, wakeup time, no wakeups in between, the same amount each time, and the same gap between last time sleep and now sleeping. I'm hoping to roll these all into one shortly..somehow.

Well on the sleep thing I can only give my perspective :P
I remember the Tour de France around 2001 when it went to ****. I was finishing primary school, staying up late in the summer and eating cereal til 4am :P Then started secondary school I was up most of the night but would sleep for an hour after it. Then started some drinking and so on and managed to fit my sleeping pattern around that :P Last few years I've spent a month as a zombie several times trying to get the sleeping pattern back. It's great til I drink or I have an event that I have to stay up late for, then it's back to square one.

Found sleeping tablets were good short term both in terms of the hours they worked and in terms of how long they should work for :P

Ooh when? Are we of the same school year? :pac:
Hmm how does the 4 months later thing work? :P Is that definitely the cutoff point? :D I was definitely going with 26 as the end

Hugs to you. Congrats on the degree though - I think there are probably a lot more like us out there so confused even at our old age :p, it's just a case of finding them.

Ah I'm just different in my thoughts in many different ways, I feel. You wouldn't think it, looking at my life so far and education etc. I just feel I grew up way too late, and before that was just a mindless odd thing..drifting through life would be an understatement - I just never thought at all! Then the last couple of years I've done nothing but think, it's been a very exciting time and I've spoken to people like I never have before..had some really nice moments. But they have been blink and you miss them and on paper I'm a total waster. My only evidence of any hint of potential is a few interesting jobs in the media in my early 20s, and meeting some really cool people (some famous), a few of whom really had faith in me. But it was all bits and pieces and I've not had anything concrete in that career area (only so much people can do for you if you're not ready at this moment). Anywaay..what I'm trying to say is I think very much in my own way/s..I know I'm not alone in that...but I'm a real perfectionist..well in my mind when planning for the future anyway! And since turning 25 it's really hit me hard how much of a move on I need to make. I'm not like my family / people I grew up with at all really..even the best, 'nicest' ones are very hooked into the average way of life thing with not lots of independent thought..in a way I'd love to just go for a job that interests me and forget all this..maybe I will once I've totally nipped the sleep business in the bud..but mainly I'm thinking there really is no more time I really need to blossom like I feel I'm capable of. It terrifies me that this blip with sleep etc will stop me from even starting, just when I was finally ready to in life.

Wow bet you guys are really glad I found this thread eh..essay much :o

Wow you're hardcore!! Again it's easier said than done but throwing yourself into something, distracting yourself from the sleep issues completely as well as making yourself physically tired, can't be bad. Not saying you don't of course, you probably do all the time, ah I don't know what I'm saying :D but yes don't sell yourself short due to this..it can destroy lives but I think many of us have 9 lives you know...! That's how I feel with this rollercoaster that seems to be coming to some kind of end now..I'm really surprised I've survived (on much the same hours as you sleep wise..to average it out it'd probably be about 6 hrs max for two years..which sounds bad but not too bad..however there have been so many all nighters and 2, 3, 4 hrs)

I'm so hardcore alright, I'm everything I wish I would be 10 years ago :P

    The cut-off is 26 and 4 months :P

I know if I picked something I'd be good, I just spend too much time switching. There are very few topics someone could have a conversation about without me being able to keep up. Apparently that doesn't get one a job though :P

As hard as I've tried on the sleep thing tonight is a perfect example, 4 hours kip on the end of a sofa with a footstool and an armchair lined up. Yet here I am 19 hours later still awake. :P

Ah despite my doom-mongering there, we are still babies  It's just that every single month now counts..I'd only begin to count 40 as actually old tbh..and if you're more wider in thinking even that wouldn't be too bad (didn't want kids, or didn't want them early etc. I'd love them myself but have thoughts on adoption moreso..there I go throwing in more completely out of the blue thoughts..obviously I wouldn't want them before I was completely settled myself though - which is an awful way off)

    If you're say 26.4 I'm saying 26.5!

Do you mean you switch jobs quite a bit? Again that's ok, especially at this age ;) And it's all very useful experience anyway..more than I've had that's for sure.

Yeah it is bloody confusing sometimes...sometimes I've had more sleep than usual and can go to sleep earlier the next night, another time I'll have had like 3 hours and stay awake for over 24 hrs! Ah think I've answered my own question there haven't I..the body adjusts to what it's used to!

I think perhaps my sleep issues are as a result of my mental ones where as ye are both sounding much like insomnia would be a start point for ye, then again I've nearly ten years on ye so perhaps as the elder statesman I need my naps!. :-P

    Yay new thread!

Feel crap in anticipation of meeting today :( personal life is good and I'm trying not to let work stuff impinge on that. I have an opportunity to set a few boundaries today, its something that came up in psychotherapy last week. I hope I'm wrong but I'm expecting to be spoken down to and made feel "lesser" and I feel sick just thinking about it. Im trying to tell myself that no one can make me feel inadequate unless I allow it. I'm such a sensitive person though that I shy away from creating or contributing to negative environments, and I think that is part of the lack of respect I get - always trying to keep the peace, or allowing others to get their way for an easy life. Changing my attitude is therefore a huge step for me.

Someone else was hassling me yesterday for information - effectively looking to use my work for their own use and its something I'm not ok with. Having to stand up for myself stresses me out but this needs to be addressed.

Meh :( stomach is in knots and I just have total Dread, despite the lovely sunny day outside and lots of positives. Hopefully I'll feel better in the afternoon. Am thinking today may be a xanax day BUT I also want to deal with the situation unmedicated too...

Very very anxious today. Want to bawl my eyes out but can't find the tears.

Feels like I have a brick in my chest

    Edit
    Listened to some meditation,
Got to have a good cry. Still anxious but not as bad

Alright in the end thanks. I didn't take any crap woohoo. Ive been annoyed at being put under pressure for a project that should have been dealt with ages ago (not ). Its crap timing with other things I have going on and stuff keep happening like being asked to send on info I sent months ago, that kind of thing. Also trying to undermine the work I've submitted. Its a toxic environment and very negative.

In the past now! Didn't need my meds and I'm glad

Don't want to sound cliched/patronising, but have you tried exercise the moment it starts coming on? Only thing that seems to half work for me.

Hi I've generalised anxiety disorder and it has flared up the past few weeks. Apart from medication I'm trying to help myself come through it. So I've been:

    Meditating daily
    Practising mindfullness
    Seeing psychologist once a week
Trying to get out of the house
    Positive thinking
    Daily affirmations
    Weekly reiki sessions
Lowered coffee to one small cup a day

Is there anything else you could add that I am missing????? Some days seem to be better than other and it can be so disheartening when you've had a good day but wake up in the horrors

Had to take my two weeks holidays from work.Nothing to do all day and nobody to spend the days with either.Doing all the stuff my counselor suggested and she's very kindly offered to see me twice a week for these two weeks, but still feel incredibly isolated and down.

You're doing really well with this stuff, in time you'll see the benefit of it all :)

One thing you might like to add is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, it's one of the most recommended treatments for anxiety. I see that you're already seeing a therapist, so you probably don't want to add CBT in on top of that, but there's a great free online course that you can do instead and it will give you a good insight into how it works and how to apply it: (I can't post the link, but the website it called Mood Gym, it'll be the first hit if you google.)

Anxiety issues are often rooted in unhealthy thought patterns, the way that we view and react to the world is what makes us feel bad. Then our brain reacts to this perceived threat (your brain doesn't know the difference between a real or imagined threat/stressor) by releasing stress hormones into your body. The hormones will make you feel even more anxious and so you worry more and on the cycle goes. CBT will teach you to look at the way you think and challenge thoughts that are irrational or overly anxious, and help you to cut off this process at the beginning. It will also help you to be unafraid of feeling anxious, and to simply accept it instead.

The work you're already doing will have a beneficial effect on the stress levels in your body, as I'm sure you're already learning through your practices. But CBT and your other therapy will help you to learn about how your thoughts work and how they can affect your anxiety levels. Approaching anxiety from both these angles will give you plenty of tools to support yourself and get better :)

If you wanted to add something else to the mix you could consider ways to raise levels of endorphins (hormones that will make you feel happy and lower stress levels). Exercise is a great way to do this naturally. Laughter is great for it too, watch something that makes you laugh every day! Connecting with your loved ones will do it, as will allowing yourself to engage in your hobbies, little luxuries and just things that simply make you feel good. Do something every day that raises your mood!

With all of the above, including the work you're already doing, you'll feel empowered, more in control of yourself and your life and most important of all, you'll feel happy.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, if you're waking up with anxiety it can be down to low blood sugar in the morning. Keep a banana by your bed and eat it as soon as you wake, then don't leave it long until breakfast! Never skip breakfast, and don't stay too long in bed thinking about things or worrying, just get up and distract yourself. If you think it might be down to poor sleep quality then looking at methods to help you get a deeper sleep will help :)

Brilliant informative reply thanks so much I'm going to look up that website about the cbt

Glad you found it helpful, and hopefully you'll find the CBT link helpful too. It was my doctor who recommended it to me, so it's got a good reputation. I've been through the mill with anxiety myself the last few years, learned a lot! Thankfully doing much better now :)

Anyone else finding it hard to feel upbeat these days despite the glorious sunshine. For the most part I always enjoyed summer time when weather is good, however this year I feel extremely anxious in terms of what to wear etc, I guess my hang up on how others view me is seeping into all aspects of day to day living for me...sickened with myself.

I have been a nervous and exhausted wreck for most of my life. I have been diagnosed with and treated for the following conditions, most of which your average GP will never have heard of and know about 20 other people on similar protocols, and we have all experienced dramatic changes. Copper overload, histadellia, pyroluria, dysbiosis and digestive enzyme insufficiency. Histapenia is another cause of anxiety. There is only One Dr that I know of in Ireland who tests for and treats these conditions. If anyone is interested please PM me for details. I was so disfunctional that I did not even own a computer until I progressed with this treatment. CBT and exercise were totally unhelpful for me. Hope this helps someone. The available help does not help everyone.

I'm just trying to steady the ship at the moment. Very scared of how bad it has been the last week, very difficult to even cope with that.

I'll try anything at this point. Badly let down this week by a woman I regarded as a good friend.. I know I'm no picnic to deal with at times but what she's dropped on me is hardly comparable.. Disappointed and crushed.
