It seems if you want to win the Liam McCarthy cup, it's not a good idea to win the Munster final. Since the introduction of the backdoor to all counties in 2002 the Munster champion has fallen at the semi final stage in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. No Munster champion has won the All-Ireland since 2005. Cork finish the year in 3rd. 1st place up for grabs in the final.

Tipp take 193 points from Cork and close the gap to Kilkenny.

    4th |(4)|=|CLARE|8448
    5th |(5)|=|DUBLIN|8425

    9th |(9)|=|WEXFORD|7905

I couldn't take serious any table that puts Dublin ahead of Limerick after how both teams performed in 2014.

Dublin aren't that much ahead and if you understood that these rankings are in place to ensure that once-off great results don't skew the long-term.

Are Dublin currently a better hurling side than Limerick, at this point in time?

    At this exact moment, no.

But that's not how rankings should work.

Argentina beat Germany last night 4-2. Would you say that Argentina are a better side on the basis of that one result?

The rankings show that Dublin are ever so slightly ahead of Limerick. A bad result at the start of the League will drop Dublin. And if Limerick continue the form they've shown this year they will rise up the rankings.

I think you're letting emotion and opinion get in the way of the facts of the results over the last 2-3 years.

All you're illustrating is you haven't a clue how a ranking system works and what it judges. I'd explain it a bit more but I've no time for a 'Johnny one-liner' whose sole intention is to knock something that I put a bucket load of work into. Not my fault you don't understand how a ranking system works.

Plenty of people have criticised this in a constructive way and there was some great discussion in the earlier days of this thread as a result, and if you took the time to go back through the thread you'd see that I acknowledge plenty of times that it is flawed, and there is no such thing as a perfect system.

The whole thing has gone right over your head, hasn't it?

It's not that difficult a concept to grasp, for anyone of medium intelligence.

In fairness to Hanalei, the system has virtually nothing between Limerick, Galway and Dublin and that is probably correct. Limerick have had the better championship but are also playing in division 2 (or whatever it's called now).

You can't throw out the rankings because of one result, essentially Limerick were coming for a long way back and will need to show a bit more consistency to be considered significantly ahead of the other 2. The fact that they have spent so long in division 2 hasn't been great for them either.

I think the rankings system works well, but it can take a while for a teams improvements to be seen in terms of their position, especially in a sport like hurling where there are so few games.

It wouldn't be much of a system if we just decided who looks best at a moment in time and re-wrote the entire table.

Well well well! Anyone see that coming? Three draws in a row in AI finals, no change to the table, Tipperary gain 20 points at Kilkenny's expense.

Putting the ranking system aside for a moment; here's my subjective ranking of teams based on performance in this years championship!

    1-KILKENNY
; Top two positions have to go to KK and Tipperary, Kilkenny get the nod as they remain the only undefeated team and unlike Tipp they came out on the right side of a tight game with Limerick.

2-TIPPERARY; Win the replay and swap them with Kilkenny. Great response to their defeat to Limerick, genuinely seem to have improved with each game.

3-CORK; Were this down to semi final performances, Limerick would take 3rd hands down. However they get the nod as they won the clash between the two in the Munster final, and won impressively against Clare and Waterford.

4-LIMERICK; A landmark win over Tipperary in Thurles for the first time since 1973 was sadly to be the only parallel for my home county to that great year as our wait continues. An emphatic hammering of Wexford was a great response to a disappointing closing quarter in the Munster final and gave Kilkenny one hell of a game in the semi.

    5-WEXFORD
; Is it too soon to say Wexford are back? They have certainly made great progress, an unremarkable Leinster campaign combined a hammering of Antrim with a flat performance v Dublin. The absorbing tussles with Clare provided us with great scenes at the final whistle in Wexford Park. The feel good factor returned to Wexford and they dispatched of Waterford before falling apart the following weekend v Limerick. Plenty to build on for next year.

6-GALWAY; Generous perhaps, were very lucky to defeat Laois but followed that up with a remarkable late rally to steal a draw against Kilkenny before being dismissed with relative ease in the replay. Gave Tipp a good game for the first 3 quarters but finished very poorly. A disappointing year, but their two defeats came at the hands of the two best teams of the championship.

7-DUBLIN; One of a few teams who disappointed, a good win down in Wexford Park where they struggled the year before but they were very poor by the standards they have set themselves in the last 6 years.

8-CLARE; A team that looked somewhat jaded this year. Always looked second best against Cork but showed good battling qualities to fight back in the two games v Wexford when reduced to 14 (and 13) men.

9-WATERFORD; A strange year, showed great promise in the first game v Cork but comprehensively outclassed in the replay. A victory over Laois was their solitary win of the 2014 campaign and even given Wexfords revival they will be disappointed in Waterford to have been knocked out by their eastern neighbours. One to forget for the Déise.

10-OFFALY; Unfortunately they were simply awful against Kilkenny, also suffered a big defeat at the hands of Tipperary. They finish 10th on account of their dramatic late win over Antrim, sad how far they have fallen in the last 14 years.

11-ANTRIM; Well beaten by Wexford and really probably should have held out and defeated Offaly. Although Laois were the better team, Antrim get the nod as they won the clash between the two in the qualifier group.

12-LAOIS; A strange and frustrating year for Laois, they play out of their skins for games they were widely expected to lose and they fall flat for games they were expected to win. Unlucky against Galway and disappointing v Waterford. Will be disappointed by the defeat to Antrim in the qualifying group but including the league campaign there were 4 or 5 promising performances by Laois in 2014. Hopefully that translates into championship victories in the next few years.

List of outcomes ahead of the replay, top two assured for both, the victor will emerge at number 1. Outcomes listed on x-axis. Cork and Clare just thrown in to illustrate the gap!

So there we have it, another year passes and once again Kilkenny end the year on top. No arguments, League, Leinster and All-Ireland championships won in 2014.

Tipperary and Cork in a fairly clear second and third place respectively, which is fair.

Gets interesting behind that, Clare, Dublin, Limerick and Galway all separated by just 48 points which is nothing, I'm pretty sure most of us wouldn't rank those teams in that order, but the system doesn't care how good a team actually is, all it cares about is results, that's all it can judge on.

Where this system really shines for me is the teams below the top 12, the system is a reasonably accurate predictor for the lower tier leagues and championships when the 300 points are applied for home advantage. By comparison, it falls down a little in the top tier where upsets are a small bit more common.

Congratulations Kilkenny, 10 All-Ireland's since 2000 is phenomenal stuff altogether, says it all that since the end of 2005 they have finished all but two months in first place in these rankings.

I might add a few comments.

End of 2014 left KK way ahead of Tip who in turn were way ahead of the chasing pack; very little separating Cork, Clare, Dublin, Limerick and Galway.

This will most likely ensure a lot of movement each week during the league between third and seventh places.

Tipperary still have a bit of a buffer to the teams behind but defeat next weekend will most likely see them sucked into that chasing pack.

Kilkenny with a massive 534 point lead will in all likelyhood enter the championship in first place unless they get relegated.

Offaly's win over Laois ensures that Laois and Antrim continue their general trend of trading between 11th and 12th place while remaining comfortably ahead of 13th, but unfortunately remaining comfortably outside the top 10. This has basically been the case throughout the ten seasons I have run this system.

If a ranking system threw up the results you'd expect all the time I'd be very suspicious that the system was designed to fit the results you wanted.

And Dublin no. 3 doesn't sound crazy, although I probably wouldn't have them there. Not a whole lot between most teams at the moment I'm glad to say.

Take a bag of money into your bookie. You should get good odds on Clare, Galway or Limerick beating Dublin this week or next.
P.S. This is February, not September.

No worries! It's not meant to be taken too seriously anyway, all I'd say is that perhaps its harsh to dismiss it based on the ranking of just one of the 34 teams!

Nice bit of movement mid table, interesting to see Down move up a place despite losing, however London lost even more points than Down thus they both swap places.

Tyrone reach their highest ever position in the 11 years I have run this of 24th following their victory over Roscommon.

In the top tier, Clare's run of six competitive games without a victory sees them slip to 7th, while Dublin consolidate third win with their victory over Kilkenny which pulls Kilkenny back a little bit towards the chasing pack. They still hold a comfortable lead however.

Not much change in terms of positions, Cork's massive win over Dublin sees them swap places while Limerick and Waterford edge themselves into the chasing pack. Wexford drop back a little.

Kilkenny now on Tipperary's (and Cork's) radar, the big lead they enjoyed a few weeks ago taking a hit with defeats to Dublin and Galway. Clare have now gone almost a year without winning a competitive fixture; not good enough given the talent at their disposal.

Clare move back in front of Limerick who are now well and truly in Waterford and Wexford's sights. And a bit of movement immediately outside the big 12 following Kerry's good win at Carlow.

However, most significant change is at the very top. Tipperary take the top spot for the first time since early 2011. It's very rare that Kilkenny are not number 1, and the general trend has been that whenever they do get knocked from the top they have gained it back within two or three games.

Nothing between the top 3, a win for Cork next weekend could see them hit top spot for the first time since the end of 2005. And in the midst of this era where thongs have supposedly never been so wide open, the top three enjoying a relatively comfortable gap ahead of the chasing pack are the traditional big 3, sigh!

Tipperary slightly extend their lead over Kilkenny after their outstanding finish against Cork, the most significant change however is Waterford jumping two places back into the top 6. Limerick finish as the second best team in 1B for the fourth season in a row as once again the team relegated from 1A bounces straight back up.

Wexford's revival stopped dead in it's tracks as their inability to defeat one of Limerick and Waterford at home has pushed them closer to 10th place than the top 8.

Keep an eye on Antrim and Westmeath who have been creeping closer to each other. Defeat for Antrim in next weekends relegation final coupled with victory for Westmeath in the division 2 final sets up a relegation play off between the two, giving Westmeath an opportunity to break into the top 12, though obviously they'll be more concerned with the prize of 1B hurling in 2016.

Waterford continuing their rise up the table with their victory over Galway, Kilkenny finish their disappointing campaign in second place, their large points gap to Clare meant they took just 6 points off Clare, Galway suffered a greater points loss to Waterford meaning that Clare go up a position despite their defeat.

Did Tipp and Cork not gain any points despite their victories (albeit against much lower ranked teams)?

Unfortunately not. There's a 1000 point gap imposed, this is actually in the best interests of both counties, but particularly the higher ranked county because once the gap is greater than 1000 the higher ranked team would actually lose points even if they won, and it also helps control what they lose if defeated.

Had the algorithm been applied for the Offaly v Tipperary game there would actually have been an exchange of 9 points from Tipperary to Offaly and Wexford would have gained 13 points at Cork's expense!

Ahead of their entry into the Lory Meagher Cup, Lancashire have been added, they have been entered with 3200 points based on the dummy rankings I assigned at the start of the ranking system (Jan 2005).

The 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B finals took place today, Westmeath's march towards possibly breaking into the top 12 brought to a halt by Kerry who after a sluggish start have improved as the year has progressed. Kerry would need to defeat Antrim by a margin of greater than 6 points to break into the top 12.

Took a bit of a break for a few weeks. Most notable change; Waterford have moved up to third, and have improved their points total by 600 so far this season after starting in 8th. They were last in the top three at the end of the 2011 season.

Thanks! They actually have 8685, I'd actually just spent almost two hours working on a similar ranking system but with a 1990 start point (as opposed to 2004/5 on the system I've been running). I've completed up to the end of the 2010 season now but my head is melted from all the number crunchung/typing etc. thus my typo (could well be a few more but the positions are definitely accurate). Should be finished in a week or two and I'll post some sort of analysis based on the data by the end of the month.

I wanted to look into a 25 year trend for the rankings, and thanks to the poster "Al Monds" I have been able to access a fairly comprehensive results archive. It appears to work quite well but 1998 is a season which makes an absolute mockery of the points exchange system as the final standings at the end of 1998 were bizarre to say the least.

My compliments to laoisman11, he has done remarkable work on the football rankings, some of his recent posts in the football thread are fantastic, makes what I'm doing seem woefully lazy by comparison :o

Anyone who studies this any way closely will notice every team seems to have less points, I am now running this based on a 1990 starting point instead of 2005, although the points are slightly lower the gaps are very similar as are the positions of the teams. Once I find an interesting way to present data on the last 25 years I'll post it here, in the meantime feel free to ask any questions. I'm not quite sure why there are less points but it doesn't really make much of a difference regardless.

Since 1990, The All-Ireland champion has finished 1st every year bar 2; in 2013 when Clare came up just short of Kilkenny, and in 1998 when somehow Limerick managed to end up on top despite an underwhelming exit at home to Cork in their first and only championship match.

People often say "X are a championship team", I'm not a believer in that but it could be said to be true of Offaly in the 1990's. For example, they started the 1994 season in 11th, only to end up first after a successful campaign. That was a bit of a trend for Offaly, mediocre at best league campaigns followed by improvements in ranking positions over the championship.

Galway have been remarkably consistent in the sense that they tend to finish league campaigns as the 3rd or 4th best team only to more often than not lose one or two positions over a championship.

Most notable change; Westmeath's huge win over Antrim shoots them up two places and into the top 12 for the first time since the end of 2005 when they won the inaugural Christy Ring Cup. Antrim fall out of the top 12 for the first time since June 2010. However, if Westmeath are defeated by Laois they will most likely fall back behind Antrim unless they are in turn defeated by Carlow next weekend.

Sorry for being a bit light on updates of late, real life kind of hectic at the moment! Antrim are now on course for their worst end of year finish since 2001 when Derry reigned supreme in Ulster, they will need a few results to go their way in the next month but they can also reclaim some of the ground they have lost in next month's Ulster championship.

Limerick move back into the top 6 but Clare after just one win in their last 11 competitive games are now in 8th.

    LEINSTER SHC

    DUBLIN (5) -V- GALWAY (7)
Galway games are always difficult to call, unfortunately more often than not they disappoint but they are capable of beating anyone on their day. Quite how Anthony Cunningham still has that job is a mystery to me. Dublin now have their own Cunningham in charge, there have been signs of rejuvenation since he took over from Daly but a largely positive league campaign has been soured by two defeats to Cork; one being an annihilation and the other a disappointing capitulation in a game they really should have won.
Result based on current rating; Dublin by 3.
I'd support this. Galway have the most outstanding player of the two but Dublin have the better overall XV, and of the Cunningham's I'd back Ger over Anthony all day long.

    CHRISTY RING CUP

    KILDARE (16) -v- KERRY (13)
Kerry's reward for qualifying undefeated is a trip to reigning champions Kildare who came via the backdoor after their first round defeat after a replay at home to London. Home advantage is generally a major factor in Ring/Rackard hurling. Both teams had positive league campaigns, like when they met last year Kerry are the form team but that didn't stop Kildare turning the tables when they met in the final.
Result based on current rating; DRAW.
Kerry are ahead but once the 300 points are added to Kildare for home advantage they are close enough so that they are in range for a draw. Personally, I am leaning more towards Kerry to sneak it.

    DERRY (18) -v- DOWN (17)
Derry have had the better year of the two so far after a mid table place in 2A of the league with Down doing likewise in 2B while Derry reached the semi final undefeated with Down coming back after a first round defeat to Kerry. Both teams have near identical rating points.
Result based on current rating; Derry by 3.
I'd tentatively agree with this but I can't say I have any real knowledge of either team aside from naming a small handful of their better players. Unfortunately these competitions suffer from a lack of tv coverage, not even getting a quick round up on the Sunday game. I'd suspect that the eventual winner of the competition will come from the other semi final but lets not forget that Down actually won this competition in 2013, no reason they can't do it again.

    LORY MEAGHER CUP

    SLIGO (33) -v- FERMANAGH (29)
Most likely a warm up for a final between the two teams next month. Fermanagh have been a cut above the other four Meagher Cup teams and it would be a major surprise were they not to continue asserting their superiority this weekend. Sligo more than likely qualified but they will need to keep the margin of any potential Fermanagh victory down, as a heavy Sligo defeat combined with a heavy Warwickshire win in the other tie (and a 32 point swing in points difference) will lead to Warwickshire stealing the second place in the final.
Result based on current rating; Fermanagh by 3
    Probably a fair assessment.

    WARWICKSHIRE (32) -v- LANCASHIRE (35)
A real glamour tie this one :p A novel derby brings together new boys Lancashire and Warwickshire. Lancashire put in two respectable performances in their opening two games before suffering a heavy defeat to Sligo. Warwickshire's greater experience should see them through here, the question is; do they feel they can win by a big enough margin to put pressure on Sligo for 2nd place and a shot at reclaiming the trophy they won in 2013?
Result based on current rating; Warwickshire by 7
A lot depends on whether Warwickshire feel the required turnaround is actually realistic, I'd back them to win by more than the 7 point prediction but I highly doubt they'll claim second place.

For the first time since February 1997 Kerry are back in the top 12 where they finish the month of May, and they will most likely finish a year in the top 12 for the first time since 1996. Westmeath can still overhaul them but that would require them to win a game (or two) against higher ranked opposition in the Leinster championship and/or qualifiers.

Derry and Down swap places after their semi final clash in the Ring Cup while Sligo's big win over Fermanagh sees Sligo move up one with Fermanagh going down two.

So where exactly are Cavan in the hurling rankings?

So where exactly are Cavan in the hurling rankings?

Cavan are basically excluded as they haven't played competitive hurling since 2011 in the National Hurling League, they pulled out ahead of that years Lory Meagher Cup and will not return until further notice. They underwent a review of sorts and have focused on underage development which has yielded modest success so far by their standards. They will return once they feel they are able to perform to an acceptable standard of competitiveness. They finished last in the rankings at the end of each season for ten seasons in a row from 2001 to 2010.

Where are they in the rankings? Once they do return they will start from where they left off; last place with 2408 points.

Incidentally, there are two other teams who are similarly in a state of suspension.

South Down; introduced in 2008 as a development team for players in the county not based in the Ards peninsula, South Down were a competitive Lory Meagher standard side. The Down county board pulled the plug at the end of 2011 when South Down finished 31st out of 36 counties at the time. Their points total of 3435 would leave them in 30th place in the current table, that would be their points total should they return but unless I'm mistaken the South Down experiment is done and we won't be seeing them again.

New York; New York in the 1990's generally played the winners of the All-Ireland B championship for the right to meet Galway in an All-Ireland quarter final. Once the backdoor was introduced, New York took a hiatus for a few years before they returned in the Ulster championship. In general, the trend was that they played one game a season (almost always a defeat) but in 2006 they caused a major upset when they defeated Derry to win a spot in the Ulster final.

However, controversy was to follow. It seems to be set in stone that the Ulster showpiece is to take place in Casement Park in Belfast which meant that New York, who otherwise always played in New York just as they do in the Connacht football championship, would have to travel to Belfast. But some New York players were concerned that if they made the trip to Ireland that they would not be allowed gain re-entry to the USA as in some cases their immigration status wasn't entirely legal (allegedly ;)), and there were other logistical issues that stood in New York's way. Evetually, a compromise was reached and the 2006 Ulster hurling final was played later that year in October in Boston, with Antrim claiming yet another title. Following all that hassle New York have not played in the Ulster championship since.

Their ranking points total was 5656 which would place them in 20th on the present table.

Cheers zombieHanalei, I do remember the fuss with NY in the Ulster championship now you mention it!

Regarding Cavan, that's the only place in Ireland where I couldn't buy sliotars in local sports shops on my travels, as my then young lads kept hitting them far & wide, was Ballieborugh Cavan. I've heard some call it a hurling blackspot!

So where exactly are Cavan in the hurling rankings?

They currently play in the westmeath junior championship, so I suppose you can probably work it out from there.
