I doubt the hogg story is true....for me it doesn't make sense unless cave is def leaving for France...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,808 ✭✭✭✭bilston

If Hogg comes then someone will probably leave. In that case my guess would be that Payne is Dublin bound.

Hogg wouldn't be available for some games but then neither would Payne so it makes little difference. Hogg is a class player who at 21 could be genuinely world class before long. I'd take him anyway.

We need a back row though.

perhaps the lack of any centre signing for Leinster has been down to Ulster finding a replacement fullback?

I thought it was payne but seriously think it could be cave due to the way he has been treated....its been pretty poor form from Ulster...
We def need a Back Row player. Someone who is versatile...I don't watch much Super Rugby so not aware of any undiscovered gems !?

I've heard Brendon O'Connor, IQ openside for the Auckland Blues, is a possibility. No idea how reliable that information is though, I've just seen it posted on a couple of other forums.

    Hogg to Ulster? Wha?!

So, if we take it that nobody leaves Ulster next season, that gives them two separate 11-15 of:

    Hogg, Bowe, Payne, Marshall, Trimble
    Gilroy, Allen, Cave, Olding, Scholes

At this point a year ago, I figured something had to give. Now I'm convinced it has to give.

    Give.

    Give us Olding.

    Ha, not a chance.

If the Hogg signing is true, I imagine our back line next year will be

    Hogg
    Trimble
    Cave
    Olding
    Bowe
    Jackson
    Pienaar

Do you reckon Payne will move, if that's your team?

Possibly. I reckon it'd be him or Cave.

Payne is the best 15 we have but not the best 13. If he wants to play 13 he needs to prove that he's good enough. So far he hasn't.

This Payne stuff has been a long con to get Bowe, Trimble and Cave of you. :D

The Hogg thing could still be nonsense though!

We really have a wealth of talent in the back line, it's a shame that we aren't churning out the forwards that we need.

It'd be nice if we could get a coach who knew how to use our back line as well, our nice offloading game has all but disappeared. Did I say Anscombe out?

I could envisage DOCII going to Ulster if there's a space there. He's out of contract in summer 2015 and realistically he's not going to make it at Munster with POM being captain and top class and Stander really emerging in the last few months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

    Quotes from Ferris' reps: http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/rugby-union/27501387

Reading between the lines and aside from the danger of an enforced retirement, I don't think there is a contract extension on the table from the IRFU.

Time to write a letter to Mourad whose club successfully got Rocky and Juan Smith back playing!

Successfully got Rocky playing? Did I miss that? I thought he didn't pass his medical or something?

I don't know about the medical, he did fail one months before he eventually joined, but he played!

The Hogg rumour is that he's apparently going to be on 180k a year (if it's all true).

    Bargain surely?

Probably more than what he gets in Scotland, sadly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

£180,000 / €220,000 a year isn't too bad, it's hardly a bargain though for a player who is a regular Scottish international. Plus Hogg only turns 22 in July. For the most part you get paid more according to your experience/age.

Just reading PR it seems he is on 90k at Glasgow which seems a pretty paltry sum for such a talent. That said he probably signed that a year or two ago when he was only 19.

I'm sure he must get appearance fees for Scotland on top of that?

More than likely. But now he'll still get those appearance fees and possibly twice the base amount.

I hope Nucifora is doing his bit to get Cave down where he belongs. In civilised D4 society playing for a side who will appreciate him!

We do appreciate him, its the bloody coach who doesnt, or maybe its the IRFU!

Give us Ryan and McLaughlin added to the signing of Hogg we will give you Payne.

    Deal or no deal.

As an Ulster fan I say deal.

I'd want Ryan plus one of Leinster's NIQ spots in exchange for Payne.

    Grand.

We need a backup 7, so you can have Payne and we'll take O'Brien.

    So.

    ...and nobody out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,920 ✭✭✭✭stephen_n

Would seem like rather silly use of a NIQ spot, especially one that doesn't give international cover, considering how good Ulsters backline is, doubt Gilroy will be too happy with it either, as he may have got gametime at 15 if Payne moves to 13.

We need backs on the bench Podge. Our depth has been pretty poor in recent times, this would certainly fix that from a backs point of view.

I thought the depth was more of an issue in the forwards? Olding back will be like a new signing already.

Trimble, Bowe, Gilroy, Payne, Marshall, Cave, Olding and Hogg - one of them won't even make the bench (obviously Gilroy right now, but if he recovers form...). It's actually not as insane as I thought once I've written it down (am I missing anyone?) - I guess part of me is just annoyed that Ulster will end up benching players who will likely be better than our starting midfield next year!

How do you define insane?? That looks like a pretty insane collection of backs to me with Pienaar and Jackson as the half backs. The pack is the issue though

Its insane as in insanely good. Not insane as insane waste of resources by having them all there.

Insanely good is ok by me. :D

We have a 7 coming in too apparently.

    How?

Herbst, van der Merwe, Williams, Pienaar, Hogg = 5 NIQs, so unless he's either Irish or Irish-qualified, you've fished your limit.

McIlroy bought them another NIQ spot.

Someone is going out, Ulster might prefer they didn't and will negotiate to keep them but someone is leaving.

I think they are going to try and convince Cave to stay and play as back up/competition for Payne @ 13. Makes sense for Ulster and Payne hasn't really set the world on fire playing 13, but it makes no sense for Cave if he has another offer on the table. Hogg is young, he could be at Ulster long after Payne has served his time and moved on. Makes sense to have competition for places but I would be disappointed to see Cave have a diminished role as his performances don't deserve that.

There's nothing to suggest this is the case. It could end up being the case but it's definitely not a certainty.

We could easily end up with none leaving.

TBH I can't see any Ulster playing upping sticks and leaving tbh. Seems to be a decent community up there and especially for Payne who Ulster stuck with despite the possibility of never coming back from a fairly serious injury.
