Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I think colloquially it's basically Shanganagh Jct as most people would refer to it. There are other examples of named 'junctions' which were/never/or no longer physical, places like Dunkitt Junction and Fenit Junction come to mind, and maybe Ennis Junction outside Limerick.

Killonan, Lavistown, Newrath, Nesbitt, Carrignagat, Navan and Knockmore Junctions all come to mind in similar vein.

I have been just looking at The Wanderer's August photos. Something that really is after getting my attention is the pictures from Sunday 08 August involving loco 222's L.E movement from Connolly to Drogheda. Surely this cant be true that the wrong engine was sent to Drogheda, and not even the wrong engine but the wrong loco class??
I am not casting dispersion on the account The Wanderer has giving to what happened but surely there is a another reason for this movement?
Then again maybe there is not knowing Irish Rail

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,174 ✭✭✭✭Captain Chaos

Could have been either there was no 071 free or in the right location or no 071 driver rostered to work it. That's the only reasons I can of for sending a 201 loco as a taxi to Drogheda.

    Why does it matter??

    Why does it matter??

It's just a very strange movement and a bit of a waste to run a 3,200hp loco on a 60 mile round trip just to move staff around. At least an 071 could have been used to haul a tara train back when needed or to swap the 071s around for maintenance over the weekend.

It's been a while since a 201 has run on the Navan branch metals.
Still an interesting movement for spotters, can't recall last time 222 ran on the northern line. Must be about 7 years or more.

It's an ex Belfast tram that was meant to have been used for a failed preservation project on the Fintona tram.

However, due to the colour of the new logo sets 22001 - 22006, which are fitted with NIR train safety equipment, just have the wording applied, minus logo.

Have they seriously decided not to paint the company logo on the TPWS-fitted 22ks in case its resemblance to a tricolour offends the natives up north? Lol.

Anyway, great pictures Wanderer, and I really like the theme you have on your Smugmug site, very clean and makes the detail in the images really stand out.

In fairness, how many other businesses incorporate a (stylised) state flag in their identity, especially when that multi-million euro train has to go though places near where such flags are burned. Should never have happened.

Yeah, I agree, the new logo is pretty bad and it was a mistake to have it be a national flag in the first place.

They'd have to actually send 22001-6 north for it to be a problem - so far it's been 29000s any time a DD set is down

Very few IE-owned station houses on the market, think Monasterevan came up for sale not long ago.
Can only be a good thing, rather than trying to secure and make good a myriad of empty dwellings up and down the country.

they would be better then pacers (if any run in that part of the world) then again anything would be better then them horrid yokes, still though they probably saved many more lines from closure and BR proved they could design a low cost easy maintainable unit for branch lines (even though in some cases they run services they probably shouldn't, just like the odd 29 operating a service to rosslare and sligo)

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words.

Nope, I don't recall seeing a pacer on Scottish metals but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. Just nowhere I lived.

We were all too busy planning re-gauging the network and providing building materials for Hadrian's wall to care about the type of train we boarded...

Now back to more domestic matters :)

    Good evening all,

On Tuesday 20th August I spent the day exploring the Red and Green Line LUAS Tram system with trips out to the suburban terminals of Tallaght, Saggart, Sandyford and Brides Glen. Pictures from the day also include the morning peak arrivals and departures at IE's Heuston Station. While on the Red Line Tram heading out to the Red Cow a little surprise awaited us at Blackhorse. All the pictures from the day are now available at: http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/2013Photos/August-Day-in-Dublin

Finally, today I ventured out for the 1150 Claremorris - Waterford Laden Timber which was worked by 074. Pictures of this, plus several more of the comings and goings on the Curragh are in the August Gallery at: http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/2013Photos/August-2013#!/i-Svmff2v

Does the fellow who owns this blogspot page post here at all? I must say I was impressed with some of the photographs on there.

This shot shows Connolly Station prior to the island platform 3 being built; note that today's platform 4 was numbered as platform 3.

This photo shows the former track area adjacent to the original inset platform 4 (at right) being filled in, in order to extend then-platform 3 (future platform 4 when the island platform 3 gets built). The inset platform 4 is where the Connolly–Howth push-pull trains departed from, before DART service came online and the suburban service became Howth-Bray through service for the most part.

    Evening all,

A rather busy weekend just gone with photos from both Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday 7th September the Irish Railway Records Society organised a outing from Dublin to Portrush & Derry using regular scheduled trains. A visit to the Foyle Valley Museum was also included in the trip.

After travelling to Derry on the Saturday with the I.R.R.S. I stayed in the West Dublin area on the Saturday night which allowed me to visit "The Gullet" outside Heuston Station on the Sunday morning for the G.A.A. Specials from Cork, Limerick, Ennis, Waterford and Galway.

All of the photos are now online at http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com The trip to Derry is in the "I.R.R.S. Outing to Derry & Foyle Valley Railway Museum" & the G.A.A. Specials are contained in the "September 2013" gallery.

The Foyle Valley Railway museum while still containing irreplaceable items is a disaster zone and I fear will be a pile of charred rubble one of these days. The City of Culture tag applied to the city appears to have had zero effect on the poor old museum. I imagine most of the sleepers beyond the museum limits are in a rare state - where they haven't been stolen or burnt.

The LU 'mid the gap' signs plastered everywhere are a tad cringeworthy, though that's the least worst aspect.
