Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Cheers lads, I am aware that it is a bit of a 'soft' target. I have already changed my mind and will go for a 2.55 with the possibilty in the next few weeks to go to 2.52/3 depending on how training goes. Although, a sub 3 marathon has always being a goal of mine since I started running, so if I run 2.59.59 I'll be absolutely delighted.

    Standard advice is to take a full break of 10-14 days.
    Needless to say that would be "do as I say, not as I do" ....

    First Half Marathon in April - want to finish close to 2hours flat.
    First Full in June - just want to finish :)
    Lose a few kgs by June.
    Be healthy and happy = D

    So result from 1st Half Marathon (Connemara) 2:00:54.

    Delighted but also a bit gutted didn't get under 2hours. Silly thoughts! Really enjoyed it.

    Working towards first marathon now in Cork in June - all going relatively well so far.

    Am thinking I'll give up booze for next 6weeks to work towards the healthy part which hopefully will have a positive effect on the mood too!!

    I only started running this year so I had/have a lot.

    1. Run the 3.65 km loop of the lake without stopping. Completed.
    2. Do a 5k without stopping. Completed.
    3. Get my average pace below 5min/km. Completed. (4:48 average now)
    4. Do a 10k.
    5. Do a duathlon.
    6. Do a half marathon.
    7. Drop my average pace to 4:30.

    I know it's a bit late in the year, but the first two goals were in my mind before the end of 2013. The third kind of happened when I was still dreaming... Here are my main goals:

    1. To keep enjoying my runs as I increase volume without injury.
    2. To hit the hills and trails as often as I can and keep having a blast each and every single time I'm out there.
    3. To run and finish my first ever marathon while enjoying the views: Causeway Coast on 27th September 2014. I wanted my first to be special after my Yosemite adventure...

    Thanks. It's mostly down to training more intelligently instead of running lots of junk miles. I doubt the improvement will continue at the same rate in the future.

    Recently came close to 91 mins for half marathon.

    Probably five/six on average. I've been skimping a little bit lately though as I've raced three times in less than two weeks and was trying to stay relatively fresh. I think that's the guts of it. One (hard) fast session, one long (slow) run and lots of easy miles. Recently I've been training by heart rate with two steady sessions a week backed up by easy miles the other days, using races as my hard workouts instead. It's been working for me so far :P

    Goals for 2014

    5k under 19 mins (current PB 19.37)

    5 mile/8k under 30 mins (current PB 33+)

    10k under 40 mins (current PB 41.33)

    10 mile under 65 mins (current PB 69.55)

    Half Marathon under 90 mins (current PB 91.30)

    Marathon under 3.30 (to be done)

    Not sure yet about the marathon time. I would need to up my LSR mileage and see how my body reacts.
    The 10 mile is probably overly ambitious and I may not have too many opportunities to do them.

    Currently doing 4 runs per week plus 1/2 swims.

    Mullingar Harriers are running a 10 miler on 27th of July, info & entry on precision timing, may suit you. There few and far between alright in summer months.

    This year I want to get sub 20 5k (current time 20:08, so should be achievable short term).

    Also want to run my first HM, and am targetting a time below 100 mins. That will probably be later in the year. Will have to up my long runs over the next few months though

    Goal number one achieved: 5km in 19m 40secs.

    Did the Bupa London 10,000 yesterday - ran 55:42, still five and a half minutes slower than my PB, but a big improvement from the 58:18 I ran in Regents Park in March. Happy enough with that tbh, even if my legs aren't today!

    Want to start getting a bit more serious about my running this year. Have done a good few 10k races over the years letting my fitness levels go up and down but never sticking with it long term to achieve any goals so making this year the one I actually do it.

    Goal 1: Sub 60 minutes 10k (hoping to get this in the womans mini marathon in June - my PB is 61 mins but the last 10k I ran i was at 76mins)

    Goal 2: Complete my first half marathon (looking at the Galway Bay half in October for this)

    Goal 3: Run 2-4 times a week every week for the year. (aiming for 4 runs most weeks but taking into account that I may not be perfect, I want a minimum of 2 runs each week)


    I am a bit daunted by the concept of a half marathon, my longest run is 10k but I am determined!

    Goal 1 done! Mini Marathon yesterday and official time 59min43seconds. I just scraped it, but its still sub 60 so happy for now!

    I've kept up the 2-4 runs per week since I started, in fact the minimum per week has been 3 so happy with that too. Have signed up for the half marathon now and am up to 16km non stop running so feeling confident about goal 2!

    Sub 45m for 10k, did 45.02 last one so should be achievable!

    Sub 70m for 10m, bit harder this one, did 78m for Ballycotton last year but have a lot more miles under my belt so hopefully that will help and the training i am doing.

    sub 4hr for Cork Marathon, hopefully can do, did the cork to cobh 15m in 2hr 01min, will aim a bit higher but all depends on how i get on in training really.

    sub 45 for 10k was done a couple of months ago, 43.52 -- now aiming to get sub 40 before end of year. Did sub 20 for the first time in 5k a couple of weeks ago.

    did Cork Marathon in 3.45 - feels like an anti climax after all the training (over 600 miles!) really wanted sub 3.30 - damned 18th mile. Want to do another marathon now before year is out..will need to see.

    half marathon PB done during cork, 1.44 so if I target any halves then I will be looking sub 1.40

    cork to cobh - looking sub 1.50 now - still a few months away though ;)

    Need to save for new runners - won something (first time -- good being older) at one of the races but 25 quid off anything as long as it is brooks is not really gonna help :)

    Missed the big goal by ~12 mins last weekend :(

    Ah well win some, lose some.

    I've decided to add a new challenge for the Autumn and try nipping under three hours in the Frankfurt marathon. Most of July is being spent on holidays so don't have a huge window to try and whip myself in shape.

    My first posting on boards.ie, I've been lurking on the Athletics subforum for a few months now and have been inspired by some of the dedicated runners here! I've been running on-and-off for about 10 years (always at the same pace), and in the last year I've decided to try and get a bit faster. My PBs are 1:54:15 for HM (Nov 2013), 53:05 for 10k (Apr 2012) and 23:58 for 5k (August 2013).

    Goals for 2014:

    1. Go to interval training most weeks.
    2. sub 23min 5k.
    3. sub 50min 10k (aiming for the Great Ireland 10k in April).
    4. sub 1:45 HM (not sure when, will first aim to break 1:50 in April/May).

    OK ... after 6 months of less than perfect training (including a month and half of no running back in March/April) finally finally finally some progress today at the Fingal 10K - 49:02. It was a nice cloudy day, and the flat course helped. A 4minute pb for me, though it's over 2 years since I did a 10k race so I haven't been contesting it too strongly!

    If I'm feeling strong in a couple of weeks I'll put in a late entry for the Haddington half-marathon (south of Edinburgh) for 9th August. The "race-equivalent" online calculators suggest that a sub 1:50 might be possible and I have been doing some good long-runs lately :-)

    Very impressed with the speedy 2014 progress of SamForMayo and other posters with similar goal-times.

    Only 1 goal this year, and only 1 shot at it.

    - run 220 km in the 24 hrs to achieve the IAAF B standard and qualify for the Championships

    Good God, it's been a long time since I've written those words. Having one single shot at a very lofty target is generally not the recipe for success, but sometimes the stars just happen to align.

    225.271k/139.977 miles

    I do not have the words to describe what it felt like when I crossed the line for 220k.

    Goal 2 in complete. I did my first half marathon on saturday in 2hrs 15 minutes, 15 mins faster than I was aiming. I wanted to do it in under 2 and a half hours so delighted with it. Gonna start looking for my next half marathon to sign up for!

    Happy to report I made the bonus goal last Sunday week in Frankfurt, that's definitely it for '14 now anyway!

    Time to think about '15 I guess :)

    5. Complete the big-10 challenge. - Nope, missed it by 2/10ths of a second. :mad:

    A pretty solid year and came damn close to hitting most of my targets.

    Goals for 2014

    5k under 19 mins (current PB 19.37)

    5 mile/8k under 30 mins (current PB 33+)

    10k under 40 mins (current PB 41.33)

    10 mile under 65 mins (current PB 69.55)

    Half Marathon under 90 mins (current PB 91.30)

    Marathon under 3.30 (to be done)

    Not sure yet about the marathon time. I would need to up my LSR mileage and see how my body reacts.
    The 10 mile is probably overly ambitious and I may not have too many opportunities to do them.

    Currently doing 4 runs per week plus 1/2 swims.

    I might as well update this. I have got all the goals except the 5 and 10 miler. I haven't had enough opportunities to do those type of races. I might do a 5 miler in the new year. If I improved the training I reckon I could get under 30 mins. The 10 mile target is out of reach for the moment.

    Thanks for saving me a bit of typing, these would be mine too.

    Hit 2-4 handily enough (88:18 half, 39.01 10k and 19.01 5K), well off on the two marathon attempts though. Tried to run 3:10 in Cork, did the first half in 93 mins :rolleyes: the last ten miles were a predictable funeral march. Decided to be more conservative in Chicago later in the year, aimed for 3:15 and ran 3:18:33. Wasn't too disappointed with that. Since Chicago I've started training with a club, i'm looking forward to hopefully improving times next year as a result of better, smarter training.

    5. Can't say I've done a whole pile more but I missed only a handful of days all year with slight strains / more than niggles.

    All in all it's been a good year.

    Run the 3.65k loop of the lake without stopping - completed.
    Do a 5k without stopping - completed.
    Do a 10k - completed.
    Do a Duathlon - completed.
    Do a half marathon - incomplete.
    Drop my average pace to 4:30 - completed.

    Too many injuries to ever get my distance beyond 12k so I came nowhere near doing the half. It's been passed over to my 2015 list of goals.

    Ok - so only got 1 of the pack.

    1. Sub 7.30 mile YUSSS! 7.00
    2. Sub 50 10k - got closer, took 1 minute off my best but still at 52.30 (only attempted one and that was in April)
    3. Sub 24 5k - no attempts but hit 24.38 in training
    4. Sub 2.00 half marathon - no attempts - again PB'd in training but didn't hit target for the year (now at 2.06)
    5. Sub 4.30 marathon - Nope! DCM - beat last year, but didn't do well on the day!

    Will focus on them for next year

May hit the mile on Xmas day but won't have a chance to race the other two.
    - 3000 miles for the year (just over 8 miles a day) 1st time I have monitored this throughout they year as well as being consistent enough year round to hit it

    All in all more fails than successes however it has been my best year by far in terms of number of races, PB's, competitiveness and overall training so I can't not be happy with it
