That seems like a strange idea. I'd assume you'd need a few staff but they would be just there to clean up spills / empty cans and restock the machines.

Also could this indicate that Galway bay are planning on getting a canning machine?

Hopefully that'll be the first decent Irish sour I get to try. If we start getting more BA beers and sours around, we'll see even more price gouge blaming on here, so get yer pop corns ready!

Even when no one complains about price, you still complain about people complaining about price?????
    Voices in your head?

Eh? I don't think you need to look far being in this thread, it's a mantra of sorts around here. You see now you're complaining about complaining about complaining....so what's up with that?

Because ladies are....what...I don't get it. I think ladies are great.

Anyone seen the sour in off licences yet? I have a good feeling about this one.

    How much?

€4, minus Beoir discount. Though that may change as I think Ken was just guessing the price.

The ladies comment, well, it puts the lads back in their place. As for the ladies, well, they're only ladies, so no harm there.

My local off licence for that too, cue me sneaking a bottle of OFAF in there because they scan the same one three times :D

Also on the subject of vending machines, The Rock Garden (later became Eamon Doran's, can't remember what it is now) had a Miller one in the early to mid nineties, £2 a bottle iirc. It was handy for us underage drinkers during the all-ages Saturday afternoon gigs, back in the day.

Watch out for the "Selected Stores Only" clause; it was in Walkinstown last night but not in Sundrive today.

Mind you, I know where it's on sale at 4 for €11

Is it just me getting old (early 40s), or is the music in their pubs absolutely deafening as the night wears on? Been to two of their pubs in the last few months and in both cases had to leave as I couldn't talk to the people I was with.

That's all pubs, basically. Its turned up during the night basically everywhere.

I hit the Brew Dock after work a few times a month and its always low enough at 5:15 but the rare nights I stay there late it does get very loud. But the same happens in my local, pub chain owned craft-free boozer.

I found that in ATG when I was in Sunday two weeks ago. Was loud when I went in and then got turned up really high. Wasn't impressed.

Thankfully the Salthouse isn't in this bracket, yet.

Apart from being pi**ed off as an individual, from an intellectual point of view, I'm curious as to whether this 'up the volume' approach is good for business. I'd imagine that up to a certain point, louder music equals more sales, as people talk less and drink more, but that if the volume goes too high, people get pi**ed off and leave. The general public will probably imagine that each bar makes it up as they go along, but I'm curious. Every business has its specialist information, do pubcos have access to information regarding optimal lighting and sound levels in order to improve sales?

It would be "accepted knowledge" in both hospitality and retail to do it. That basically everyone does it makes it very hard to perform any objective studies, though. Accepted Knowledge often turns out to be bollox.

There is some anecdotal evidence of sorts - when rolling in to the Drunken Fish in the IFSC after Muse last week the first thing I noticed was how bloody quiet it was for 11pm. People have come to expect pubs to be loud at that time. Was a nice atmosphere for a few post-gigs pints, mainly due to being quiet, though.

I was told that when the music volume goes up so does the volume of conversations. Shouting makes throats dry, hence people drink more.

Ditto with "free" cocktail sausages, usually well salted. The publican is not doing you a favour, they're just trying in make you thirsty.

I was there too and enjoyed my meanies and monster much (a lot more than the Dortmunder, which I thought was bit meh). Really like the pub, but visually, I think it needs something to make it look a little less canteen-like. Some kind of feature, like a nook, or a snug, or something. But it's a good spot.

PMacs do both the monster munch and the snugs, should you want to try either or both.
