Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

As small as the Mac market is, it's still much bigger than the Linux market, and is a market that are willing to pay for software and it still took them close to ten years to get Steam.

If the Humble Bundles were any sort of indicator, then Linux users will pay more for their games than Mac or Windows users once they are marketed in a way that is loosely consistent with with a sort of linux ethos.

Paying a tenner for a few small indie games does not compare to paying €50 for a full publisher title.

It's a start, but not that the big houses would care. Linux distros are very source code centered. There isn't much incentive to release binaries that require a team to maintain, when the community could do it. They can't release the source because of IP and all that jazz.

Well, no, but the stats say that on average Linux users paid over 3 times what Windows users paid for the same software, and almost twice what OS X users paid for the same software.

Given that the work involved in porting Steam to OS X (and incorporating any support at all for the PSN) it would seem strange to not then move beyond that into wider Linux support, but between potential DRM issues and graphics support issues I wouldn't exactly hold my breath for it to happen. Which is mildly annoying, as I'd quite like Steam on the fedora box I use as a mediacentre on my TV without having to muck around with Wine - I know PlayOnLinux is supposed to be making this easier, but nothing's going to beat a native client.

i cant see it happing anytime soon myself but
android although only on tablets is becoming quite popular and google will realy push for that and as we all know android is linux...

i think they would make a profit tho,
take example that call of duty sold 1,300,000 copies

and at just over 1 % of computer use linux that would be around 15,000 copies for linux

if steam (i know that includes copies sold in shops ) steam would make around €100,000
the only problem is that people who use linux who want to play call of duty or other will use a windows partion ...

Why bother? Steam already works nearly flawlessly through Wine, and many of the games work well through it (more than would ever be concievably ported). Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Half Life 2 and portal not only play flawlessly on my Nvidia card, they also get superior framerates than in steam for OS X on a 2008 macbook pro.

Well, a bastardised Google branded version anyway.

It's funny that Android uses the NetBSD libc. They probably went down that path to avoid having to deal with Ulrich Drepper.

Valve have said they are not working on a Linux version of steam
Question: Final question, and one I'm sure you're not super-keen to answer, but I promised one of our tech guys I'd ask it. What truth is there to rumours that you're also working on a Linux version of Steam?
Doug Lombardi: There's no Linux version that we're working on right now.

I just hope that all of this talk will lead to the games industry making some sort of move to linux. Gaming is the only thing keeping me dual booting and I really wanna let go.

If origin comes to linux they will port all(most anyways) there games, because it would be pointless to have just a client
They have only a few games on origin

Steams have millions of games and they really only sell the games .

    EA origin actual make them

I was so far gone from Windows that I just stopped gaming when UT3 failed to materialise on Linux. :o

hey , that what people are saying but at lease it a step in the right direction.
I probly won't play them but I will still dl
Just to add to the count

Just "installed" it. Required me to enter my Ubuntu SSO details.
After install it then proceeded to open up the browser with
    http://alliances.commandandconquer.com/?utm_source=%28not%20set%29&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=cca_ubuntu
Then had to sign in with my Origin account.

It is just one of their Play4Free. It is WebGL but pretty crap quality. I am quite afraid of it being just a way of making them jumping on the micro-transaction bandwagon.

I have to say that all this is great news. I bought the humble bundle myself recently. Availability of games on linux would probably see a massive surge in desktop linux usage (as in from almost nothing, to two times almost nothing :D). It would certainly remove one of the biggest barriers there for the ~14 - 40 year olds.

just worndering , what games do people think valve will port over to linux. There Half life or counter strike.
They wont just bring out the client

EDIT: Does anybody think it will be in the usc or what ?. If it is it will cost $0:00 , it wont be free

I imagine any games that are available on Mac will be ported on to Linux. These are the games that they have flagged to be most popular.

They would never charge for the steam client. That would be madness.

Not to mention require feck all effort to then port to linux. If it runs on Mac I think it would be handy to port to Linux. I'd nearly help them out if I wanted the game badly enough.

They said they were porting the source engine though, right? I remember being very upset at the time that that engine wasn't OpenGL.

Hey...who knows....we may see a native UT3 client yet. :D (yes, I am *still* bitter).

well , i presume , they can only port over the openGL games, which are basically all the mac games on steam

i would say that other developers wont consider Linux (on steam) until there is an actual client.

Other games have been ported in the past, though obviously OGL games are much easier to port. I'd say the mac->linux port effort is relatively small.

what i mean is that the games that are on mac are ussaly through OpenGL
and its will be the ones that can be easly port that will

Are you suggesting that there will be a windows and linux games, no mac ports for current games?

Yep. Agreed. I remember for UT2004 though, they paid Ryan whatshisname to port it from D3D to OpenGL on Linux.

Can't quite understand the question. I was saying more or less what you were saying...that mac ports will be handier because they're OGL already.

Ian Romanick of Intel's Open-Source Technology Center blogged about The zombies cometh.... In there, Romanick shares that he and his team were in Bellevue working with Valve's Linux team on Left 4 Dead 2. Romanick's key points from the blog post:

*It was the most successful work trip I've ever had. The guys at Valve were amazing to work with. They are sharp, driven, and have an aggressive plan.

*There are also a few places where we eat way, way too much CPU. A lot of these problems mirror issues that we've seen with other game engines (e.g., Unigine). These have been a lot easier to diagnose on L4D2 because we have access to their source code. Being able to take a profile that shows times in the driver and in the application makes a world of difference. Being able to tweak little things in the app (what happens if I do this...) is also helpful for diagnosing performance problems.

Has anybody though why steam want to invest so much in linux and open source

Well apart from the fact that linux user want to game

Have a look at this , from the Casual Connect videogame conference in Seattle, USA, Newell said:
“The big problem that is holding back Linux is games. People don’t realize how critical games are in driving consumer purchasing behavior.
We want to make it as easy as possible for the 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well. It’s a hedging strategy. I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space.
I think we’ll lose some of the top-tier PC/OEMs, who will exit the market. I think margins will be destroyed for a bunch of people.
If that’s true, then it will be good to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality.

Similar article on the BBC as well...

    http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-18996377
Mr Newell, who worked for Microsoft for 13 years on Windows, said his company had embraced the open-source software Linux as a "hedging strategy" designed to offset some of the damage Windows 8 was likely to do.

"We want to make it as easy as possible for the 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well," said Mr Newell.

"Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space."

I would say that has more to do with the new inbuilt Windows market place. Its a major rival to Steam, and could threaten to close off the platform from Valve. Although on the upside it could mean even better deals for us lay-folk.

Can't imagine it will have much more of an impact that the existing Games for Windows Live does.
Granted it'll be available by default. But I am not so sure that Steam's regular customers will jump ship.
I just hope I don't have to deal with platform exclusivity with Microsoft Games published titles. Not the biggest fan of the GWFL and how it handles game installations, DRM and DLC.

well i presume the businesses plan is that , IF people in the future want to move to linux they will still have steam.

Also are valve predicting a mass market move from widows to linux
would be cheaper for OEM's by 20 -30 quid per machine
That goes a long way when your selling thousands of PC's daily

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,735 ✭✭✭Stuxnet

windows 8 wont be such a "catastrophe" if ms simply implement a turn off metro feature or have it disabled by default on pc's ...

is bound to come in an update if the above valve premonitions come
