Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Bloody hell the full game was 4.3GB and the demo is another 4? Bah.

Yeah 4GB or thereabouts. Am extremely thankful that this coincided with me moving to a new house with a 30Mb net connection!

I have a 7 meg connection so it shouldn't take too long, I was just hoping it would be about 1GB so it would take less and I can be playing it sooner when I get in from work :)

Connection speed was decent, so should download fairly fast for you. Regardless, by this stage a half hour's wait or whatever just makes the opening cinematic scenes that bit more tantalising!

Gonna take ages here in 3mb land:(

Download is a fair bit slower for the demo than the pre-load unfortunately.

I'm on the 30mb UPC and the pre-load was at 3.2MB/s, but the demo is only at 1MB/s

So what are peoples first impressions of the demo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,112 ✭✭✭Blowfish

Certainly very "pretty" UI and art wise. The layout will probably take a short while to get used to, though everything being out of the way is quite nice. I'll have to see if it's possible to shrink the size of the unit picture in the bottom left and the research icon in the top left. They seem a bit disproportionate, especially in comparison to the minimap.

Naturally enough though, it'll take a fair bit longer than the 20 mins I've had so far to see how good the actual 'meat' of the game is.

[edit] Nice one, they thought of that. There's a 'use small scale interface' in the options. It's not available in the demo, but good to know for release.

Played through the demo a few times now. Wow - those 150 turns just fly by.

The hexes work brilliantly and the minimalist UI is pretty and functional - though it does take a little getting used to. Everything seems to be there, you just need to dig a little.

The new features seem to work fine as well - the city states add some sense of population (not just you and the NPC Civs), and the Natural Wonders (from Civ Rev) are a nice touch, and an additional feature to landgrab over.

The ability to accelerate cultural zones by buying specific hexes is both inspired and expensive. I need to study the Social Policies (kinda like Talent Trees in World of Warcraft et al) some more, but the system seems to be intuitive and deep, with some nice options. Hopefully they can influence the game in numerous ways and not just end up with a default "uber-policy".

    Can't wait 'til Friday.

Took a while to recognize the voice - it's William Morgan Sheppard. Really like the husky delivery - but miss Nimoy's a bit.

UI is very pretty, though I'm having some graphical issues with roads not drawing properly and farms only appearing on one half of a hex etc. (ATI 4850 card)

Demo is short, 100 turns. Game looks good, the limitation of one unit per unit of iron is going to make things very interesting on smaller maps!

Playing as Napoleon, have only played for 2/3 hours or so but loving it so far. City states are pretty nifty and the combat is much more involving. <3 ranged land attacks by naval units. My graphics card (8600GT) is struggling a bit @ 1920 x 1080, might be time for an upgrade ):

Anyone know if Civ5 supports dual screens and if so in what capacity? Googling doesn't seems to bring back anything concrete. This seems like the perfect type of game to take of advantage of a dual screen setup. Maybe have an overview map on one side with current stats and main gameplay on the other screen :D

My PC is creaking a bit now at 2 1/2 years old but the game runs well at 1680 x 1050 with most options on medium. I like it a lot, will take a bit of getting used to but looking very promising.

There's a ridiculous amount of pissing and moaning going on at civfanatics, people seem to forget the state Civ 4 was in when that was released.

Demo is epic. Love what they've done to it.

EDIT: Should also say, getting about 90FPS on my rig completely maxed out

    8gb DDR3 RAM
    GTX 295
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I got Civ V demo working on my cheap laptop:

    1.5ghz core 2
    2GB RAM
    8400GS M
    Windows XP SP3

Got it at lowest settings on low resolution. Running at about 20fps with occassional dips to 15-16fps. Very playable for a strategy game by the way :pac: Time taken between turns takes an age though.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 4,726 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzovision

I've noticed from the demo end of turn times take considerably longer in early game than any of the previous games. I'm a bit worried that they'll take an age come later game.

No I only post the odd time, usually just read the strategy guides etc once the game's been out for a while. The General Discussion forum around the time of a release is a cess pool of stupidity.

Anyone with the full game got any comments on the diplomacy and/or AI? It's getting a bashing in some reviews on these areas.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,135 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

Pre-loaded the full game now. Not sure of the diplomacy to be honest. Dont think it will bother me anyway. The demo showed that the game is still extremely in-depth and intuitive :D

Played my first campagn there last night - I'm officially in love. WHAT A GAME!!
The interface is so smooth and smart. Really refined feel to everything. No religion :D (Hated it in Civ4!)
The battle stratagies are much more immersive. I didn't think they'd be able to get me off Civ3 after the last iteration didnt do it for me; now they have!
Best anology for me is Windows.
    Civ3 = XP, fast + effective. :)
Civ4 = Vista, nice gfx but buggy and sluggish
    Civ5 = 7, gfx + fast + effective! :D

    One more turn. . . .

Did it come with a key? If so you might have been able to plug it in to steam and do the pre-load. Decrypting still takes awhile though :/

I had a short 2 hour game this morning on Chieftain, the AI didn't do much, Gandi is sitting in a single city churning out wonders, Elizabeth seems to be bipolar, likes me one turn and cancels our treaties a few turns later and it looks like the Russians are the only real competition on the continent. There where a load of city states taking up valuable city building room though :/ Have to wonder if they're really worth it but this game is quite different to the previous one.

Some are some aren't, in my case one city state in particular is incredibly useful.

I started off on Warlord (still pretty easy at that level) as the Romans. Since both unique Roman units depend on iron it's a pretty important resource for me, but I only have 2 in my own territory. I discovered soon enough though that one of the city states on the other side of the continent had no less than 8 in it's territory. It'd take far too much of my army/resources to wade the whole way across the continent to it, so I just became allies with them to get the iron and pumped out a load more Legions, leading me to be able to absolutely destroy all my neighbours.

They also come in quite handy as buffer states. At one point the French and Chinese both declared war on me (a good bit prior to my iron windfall) as I had been lazy with keeping up a decent sized army. I became allies with 3 of the city states that were sitting directly between me and the French to the south who had a larger army than me. The city states immediately declared war on the French/Chinese too. Between them and one or two of my units, we were able rebuff the French attacks to the South, which let me focus my main army (only about 4 units) on the Chinese to the East.
