    Where was that maglite?
This is looking like something that really needs reform:eek: and a large dose of cop on.
If a complaint is made and still they carry on regardless. Surely it should be acted on.

    Why should we be surprised......

Is there any way I could make a official complaint about standard cable ties before the boxes are opened tomorrow about the lack of security on the boxes.?

Can I get back to your op and the report on the RTE website, I noticed a little descrepancy. You said the presiding officer did nothing initially, and I watched here as your efforts eventually bore fruit over the next few hours. But the RTE report differs insofar as the Sherriff is quoted as saying that the box was immediately sealed when you brought attention to the matter, as far as I can see the Sherriff lying.

Am I right to say this, is he trying to safe face and should RTE be pulled up on this?

    Thought I clarified earlier, sorry.

When I got the Garda, we both went down to the classroom where the polling booth was and I pointed out the open box took the photo and left a few moments later. I did not ever see the box being sealed, the Garda said he would say it to the presiding (deputy) officer on duty. I went dowwn hall and spoke to Presiding officer. Again he made no effort to go to the room at that point.
I then left and thought about it over the next hour and thats when I decided to do something about it.

The sheriff only arrived on site and was informed about it later...The sheriff covers the whole constituency AFAIK

    Hope that clarifies it.
    BTW
We are taking the word of the officers that they had cable ties handy!!!!! and that's what was reported on RTE.

No need to say sorry, you did clarify, I mistakeningly assumed the presiding officer and sheriff were the same person.

I voted in Cork north central. No Garda present.

My girlfriend had a good story tho. A very elderly, blind neighbour that she knows voted today. Obviously for him to be able to do this, the room is emptied and someone records his vote. Strangely tho it was one of the people working in the centre that filled out his ballot paper for him. I would have thought that this would most definitely be a job for a Garda?

I like a bit of privacy...:P Not Ballincollig.

The ties I saw were different to these, But I would assume these are standard ties as well..

I reckon the Garda who stitched up the McBreartys should do it.

Any person who is incapable of filling in the ballot themselves may indicate to the presiding officer their choice of candidates and the presiding officer may mark the ballot for them.

Standard duty of the Presiding Officer. Part of the reason why presiding officers/polling clerks etc are forbidden from electioneering.

Also, a 'companion' of the disabled person is allowed to assist the voter if the voter so wishes.

    Linky?

Not doubting you but we're both curious after reading through this thread. I would have thought a Garda would be most appropriate.

Edit . no need for link. Raging Ninja has explained it a bit better

I think they are stored in "secure" locations, Garda cells etc.

Yes and I was sneering at the fact you consider Gardai honest and upstanding, in comparison to poll clerks/presiding officers. Gardai are about as impartial as economists are ;)

there was no gardai where i voted in dublin north east earlier

I don't believe there has to be Gardaí present at polling stations. Out in my area, a couple of Gardaí come by to check up on us a couple of times through the day, but that is usually all.

No Garda on duty at CBS, Basin Street, Dublin 8 this morning at 08:45.

1551 Cork County Sheriff Michael O'Driscoll has said an unsealed ballot box at a polling station in Ballincollig was immediately sealed once it was brought to the attention of staff by a voter this morning.
    Just found this.

BLEEP BLEEP had just voted at his local polling station at around 11am when he said his four-year-old son opened the ballot box, which had not been properly sealed.

Op did you make news :P

Fat lot of good an armed Garda is looking after a glorified tupperware box tied together with generic 10 cent cable ties....

Any one of us could have had that (well paid) job fondeling the electoral system for 15 hours; open the box, remove a few votes, slip in a few of my own. It's a complete FARSE

The moratorium on electoral coverage would not extend to such core functionality of the system. Should've been scrutinised further. This needs fixing.

I'm declaring epic shenanigans on this one

The returning officer (typically also the county registrar / sheriff).

Your best bet would be to get a politician to give you an invite to attend the count and give the returning officer your complaint in writing. Alternatively, wake up your solicitor early in the morning.

Polling clerks - one or two will be in charge of a desk
Presiding officer - in charge of a polling station / location
Returning officer - in charge of a constituency or constituencies.

up here in donegal they have metal boxes with big padlocks on them

    proper job !
    Same in my polling station.

There is something solid and secure about a metal box in compare to a plastic box.

Voted in Galway city today. No garda present - is there meant to be? Hadn't seen this thread so didn't check the seals, but it was the big metal box type. No other general public in voting when I left so hope it was sealed! Box was fairly full anyway, had to give the ballot paper a good push in, so could be easily pulled out through the same slot if wanted!
There do not have to be a Gardai present. It is up to the presiding officer to call for one if there is any issues or if there is any security concerns to be check out.

I never seen a Gardai on any Polling station that I been voting in over the years.

Doesn't necessarily mean anything. When there are tens of thousands of ballots being counted there are bound to be a few miscounts.

I didn't mention that the presiding officer lied in front of a Garda too. He claimed he immediately went "with me" to the room and checked and sealed the box. I called him a liar and asked the Garda to witness that fact...... He did not retract but said later he went down after I left......

IT DID HAPPEN BELIEVE ME ALSO I HEARD FROM A CANADITE THAT THE LAST LOCAL ELECTIONS THE SAME THING HAPPENED THE STAFF TOOK THE BOXES THE CANADITE FOLLOWED THEM WITH A VIDEO CAMERA AND SAID THOSE BOXES NEVER REACHED THE COUNT CENTER HE SAID WHEN HE ASKED THE SUPERINTENDENT HE WAS TOLD NO THEY DID THAT VIDEO HE TOLD ME IS ON YOU TUBE I WILL GIVE THAT CANADITES NAME IF YOU WANT TO ASK ME BUT ONE OF THOSE BOXED IN THAT COUNT CENTER I HEARD HAD %83 WHICH IS INPOSSABLE I WAS TOLD AS I ENQUIRED IN THE COUNT CENTER LAST NIGHT QUIETLY.

THEY HAVE TO BE A WAY WHERE THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN AGAIN EVEN THE WAY THE BOXES ARE BEING DISPATCHED TO AND FROM THE COUNT CENTER DID YOU SEE THE VOTEING CARD ANY ONE COULD COPY THOSE THEY COULD THINK OF GIVING THE VOTER A SORT OF SWIPE CARD OR SOME THING TO VOTE WITH THEN A SLIP OF PAPER THAT LOOKS RECYCLED

How could that be a hiccup the number of names of the people on the registrar that is allowed to vote is less than the votes you cant vote unless your registered

  • Registered Users Posts: 7 irishanarchist

I am very familiar with voting i am voting since i was 18 now i am 52 but i never came across the likes of that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,491 ✭✭✭✭Victor

ONE OF THOSE BOXED IN THAT COUNT CENTER I HEARD HAD %83 WHICH IS INPOSSABLE
Do you mean 83% first preferences for one candidate?

It is quite possible. I tallied after 2007 election and I was slightly shocked that one box had such a high percentage for a particular candidate, until I realised that is was the box from where that candidate lived.

it wasnt where any canadite lived it was a small polling booth along side 3 others but what i did notice when i went to the count was there was not one of those officers there counting wheter it was out of fear or just depression but they should have another system. I heard also today that FF did have observers at some booths then look at the socialist canadite ammount of votes he got he was disgusted the observers were in his area ? was it on account of the FF observers

Please start making sense. A few full stops and capital letters wouldn't go astray. And please don't do posts in ALL CAPS; it's quite unnecessary.
