Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Should be about stamping out this joke; that's on us tbh not adding to it.. the Irish! great bunch of drunken shreks

Arthur sounded like a dapper character, tbh but they were more civilized times and there ain't no dudess around to try reason that one out of me.

I don't understand why you go to the pub to spend money on Arthurs day

If there was free beer I'd go...but there isn't

    Piss off Arthur I say

    Im conflicted.
I agree with all the observations re: Diageo /marketing and corporatism etc.

    BUT

I like a Guinness and its €2 a pint in my local. I never have the cash to go to the pub really these days so its a nice opportunity to a have a few and not feel too ripped off.

There will always be that lunatic element (temple bar vids on you tube) but Ill be avoiding that.

We need to get behind these traditional festivals and roll it out to the market going forward.

I like guinness and a lot of people I know will be around town that night so I kinda like that aspect, it's an excuse to gather a few friends together and have a bit a craic, it's a marketing stunt, I know, I don't really care..... I just like the atmosphere....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,730 ✭✭✭✭entropi

Am I excited? Am I fuck!

Farce of a day, but a pure goldmine idea from Diageo. I'd say the person/team that came up with that idea probably got promoted with a nice payrise.

    Baaaaaaaaaaa! So many sheep!

just like Paddy's Day, Valentines Day, new Years' Day, I will be avoiding town like crazy on Arthurs Day. it's another "lunatic" day where everybody is "told" that its a great day and everybody should be out. its a marketing ploy. The end.

I would rather go out when i feel like it to have a drink, not when some marketing company tells me to.

    Arthurs Day is a farce.
    So?

You'll need a ticket to get into a large amount of pubs.
I would regularly go to the Stag's Head for pints on a Thursday - AFAIK it's ticket only tomorrow.
Would I buy a ticket to drink there? Would I fukk!!

Now this I have a problem with, regular drinkers in pubs being alienated by having to buy tickets to get into their local cos it's 'Arthurs Day'. That's not on, if it were me, I think I'd boycott the place for a while afterwards, take my custom elsewhere.

    Baaaaaaaaaaa! So many sheep!

Whats so wrong with people using it as an exuse to meet up.

Also I was talking to the owner of the spot where we usually drink and he said there would complementary Guinness stew and a free pint or two if we called before 6 on Thursday. It wouldn't be happening with out Arthur's day so its even a better idea than I already thought.

No tickets needed this year for any pubs.

It was fine to have it as a 250 years celebration thing. That was a good idea. But carrying it on every year is just a marketing gimmick by Diageo and people should really just ignore it. If you want to go for a pint that night do so, but not because the marketing monkeys at Diageo told you to.

Paddies rise to the occasion, embrace this glorious feast day as being as Irish as Cú Chulainn and uisce beatha itself, and pass with flying colours. And to top this statement of Irish identity off, they'll probably watch British soccer on the tv.

Theres free beer in my local. Guiness donated an extra keg and the pub has passed the saving on to the clientele. Until the first keg is gone all guinness is free.

    Well said.

As I've said already in this thread, I (and thousands upon thousand more) are going out because we hope it'll be a good night, most of my mates will be out, there is gigs on around the city, money is raised for charities.

Those people in this thread that have been moaning and b!tching about the marketing of Arthur's Day. I presume you don't use any products that are in any way advertised? You don't listen to any music by bands who have ever used an interview to promote an album/single? You only support sports teams that don't carry any form of sponsorship?

Because if you do then I think that makes ye quite the hypocrites coming into this thread calling people (who are either going out tomorrow or worked on the Marketing at Dieago) all sorts of insulting names just because we enjoy Arthur's Day.

I think Arthur's Day has become so commercialised in recent times. The true meaning of the day has been completely lost. Now it just feels like Diageo are exploiting binge drinking culture to make money and raise brand awareness.

Huzzah, a false holiday to celebrate a drink i don't drink, the day after which, fully half my staff will be useless for the first half of the day.

    Thanks Diageo, needed that.

Why not take them out for a good meal beforehand? Will mitigate the effects somewhat. Plus they'll think you're awesome

Yeah because if you're not gettin' p!ssed on Arthur's day you're uptight.

Maybe he doesn't want to go out? Typical Irish attitude - 'ah sure have a few drinks, it'll be a bit of craic'.

I'm not miserable ill be playing soccer thursday night with all my friends and then ill go home to my beautiful girlfriend.

And might login to Boards during the night to laugh and chat to others about the monkeys out drinking Guinness!!!! who think they are great things altogether cause they are drinking beacuse its the only way to socialize in Ireland!!!!!

Drinking Guinness on a thursday night is a regular occurrence for me but having a bit of an extra incentive is no harm, it will get more people out and also might result in a few free pints and a bit of free grub.

Cool, will do. But only if you agree to tell the staff that anyone coming in with a hangover will be sent home absent pay.

oh wait, that'll be happening anyway.

It'd be fine if they went for a few, but this being Ireland, and fun absent drink being an alien concept here, thats not going to happen.

You live up to the "creul" in your username anyway, I'd be at home half the fridays in the year if I was sent home everyone that I was hungover along with with plenty more around the office :D

I booked thursday and Friday off work !!

Why ? So i can prep thursday during the day, then hit town, in what will no doubt be a Jack daniels fuelled rampage, all the while flicking around the phrase "Drink responsibly" to any bit of fluff that gets within ear shot of me.. of course i'll be directing them to my groin during said conversation ..

Friday's the recovery, and subsequent waiting for the horror's to set in .. also checking of my fone FB, and twitter to see if i sexually abused any other ladies during the night ....

All in all it should be a stormer !!

Ah yes, expecting people now to honour the age old adage "honest days work, honest days pay", is being an asshole.

A complete joke of a day, Diageo whoring a drink for money, they don't even have it on the same date every year ffs! Put it on the Thursday so people might go out on the Friday and Saturday to spend even more money on diageo piss water! I went out last year for it in Galway and while it was great craic at 6, the evening quickly went to complete crap when everybody on Shop Street was hammered by 8.

It wouldn't be so bad if people didn't insist on getting as pissed as humanly possible so early in the evening. Try to go to a pub that night for a few and everyone is absolutely locked to the point where ya con't converse, everyone is falling over themselves and the toilets in the pub are covered in vomit!

For those of you in Galway the beer house has an anti Arthurs day where their pints are €3, they had that offer for the last two years anyway.
