Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I would port over, if you are unlucky that they do a age check for you them you can go with the phones in your pocket. From previous poster looks like they are asking for proof of age when they send you the SIM. You could also say you are 18 with no passport, driving licence or any other type of ID as live at home :D

We may also charge you interest on the unpaid amount on a daily basis at the rate of 2% above the base lending rate of Allied Irish Bank plc. We may also charge you reasonable administration and collection costs as a result of you not paying any amount due to us.

Don't you have to registered/regulated by the central bank to charge interest?

I would say that is a joke no? How could an operator charge you interest?

These are not commercial transactions as per that legislation.

"The Regulations apply to commercial transactions in both the public and private sectors. They do not apply to contracts made before 7 August 2002, claims for interest of less than €5, transactions with consumers or debts that are subject to other laws, e.g. insolvency proceedings."

Just seen on their twitter account that they have the internet charges for after the 29th.

That's daft, are we going back to dial-up pricing?

There is no more 'per-hour' with data usage, it's just 'on' and trickles through as you need it. Do they think people still 'log on' just to 'check emails' and all that?

This now sounds like it's coming from a man in his late forties (Danielle 48?) pretending to be 19. Now that's creepy. :p

Looks like 48 will be good for people that call or text quite a bit and no internet usage, if I listen to stream radio or browse the web a bit while walking I will spend about €1 each day, that could be €30 a month on internet only.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,104 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

Yep at a underestimate I'd say I'd spend 30e a month on net with that. Would actually spend more. Some people dont use net at all, this would be great for them. More and more people use net though, sure I can text from the net and make phone calls/skype from the net. I barely need non-net any more :p

it's bizarre. Don't all the other operators already offer a 99c a DAY up to 50megs?

unless this ''hour'' can span a few days e.g. 10 webpages loading and a few emails totalling say 5 minutes ''loading time'' per day equalling 12 days light usage?

I think he means that one hour worth of page loading time instead of whatever page loads in an hour. ie 500 pages take one hour to load over the space of a week. Instead of x amount of pages loading between 4 and 5pm any given day.

One hour total download time, spread over a day or more, or one hour counting down from the moment you first access data.

I'd say its the latter hope not it wouldnt be too bad if it was spread over a day.

The deal they are doing now is fine pity they dont keep that.

Then again we all know how O2 sees data usage.

To me it sounds like 1 hour total download time over, because the 2nd will mean if you open 1 webpage only now for 30 seconds and stop browsing and came back 1h later and browse another webpage for another 15 seconds you will be charge for €2 with option 2, but should be only 30 seconds with option 1.

Nah, that would be even sillier, why not price per mb/kb in that case?

I bet it's per hour or part thereof.
The fair use threshold for standard hourly internet options is 2.5GB per option purchased.

Smartphones, obviously, load data in the background near 24/7. I assume their "loading only" charges include background data. If so, smartphone users could end up with extortionate bills.

Again, avoid 48 like the plague if you use data.

It is a great offer ...
if you don't use the data which most of the population now do,
if you don't do international calls,
if you can live without webtexts,
if you don't call landlines in a heavy manner,
    if you never data roam,
if you don't need a subsidized network phone,
if you can live with online support only and
if you can find a way around their age discrimination.

Thanks but I don't think it needs clearing up. I mean, how can the network distinguish between auto loading data and manual loading data. They can't. So if you have a smartphone, which most likely will have background data, Telefonica will screw you on data charges.

    Hey lads,
This is my first post so hope this is of use to some people?!
New mobile operator called '48' launched yesterday - its owned by Telefónica (O2 Ireland) so from my experience their coverage is good..
The below paragraph if from their website http://www.48months.ie/
'For those who are interested in where we have come from, we are independent but we are part of the overall Telefonica family, and we run our service on the O2 network.'

3000mins to irish mobile networks per month
5000texts to irish mobile networks per month
20mins to irish landlines per month
    All for €10 per months

500mb of data per week for €2 (from the T&C's it looks like data will cost more from the end of Feb)
Prepaid sim only - have to port your number to them with your unlocked phone..
Can only buy your topup online
500mb of data per week for €2
Customers care - looks like email or online chat only

It say on their website that this is for customers who are of the age 18-22 years old however it doesn’t look like they require ID, but sure you can say you are of that age bracket ;-)

you dont have to port they give you an 089 number after registering and you can top up at any payzone

    I thought 089 was Tesco?

You can't make more than 20mins calls until you pay your €10 membership again. I'm with them 2 weeks now and still haven't used 1 min of my landline balance, so it suits me, maybe not others.

You have to get the phone unlocked in order for the 48 sim to work.

I think you need to spent a minumum of 150euro on top ups before they'll unlock a prepay phone for you, not sure what the conditions are for billpay phones. I subimtted my request by this form and they sent the unlock code to my email a couple of days later.

If they tell you that you haven't spent the required amount to get the phone unlocked tell them that you are going abroad and roaming somewhere that they don't have a network roaming agreement with and they'll sort you out. Zanzibar for eg.

I have two questions about this network:
    1. Does it have webtexts?
    2. If you don't top up by €10 how much does it cost to send a text or call someone?

No, if it was bill pay you would be able to make as many calls as you like and would just be billed for it... It is pre-pay, when you run out of credit you cant make any calls... But just to let you know iv been availing of this offer for 2 weeks now, I have used about 1200 minutes so far and have to say this is a great deal... :D I was paying over 60euro per month and not making as many calls...;)

So if I order today I can wait until say a week on monday to port my number? I'd be getting it sent to my home address and won't be back until next week!
And one last thing :D Do I need to put in my number when I'm ordering it or can I just leave it blank and port my number to the sim they send out?
