    True, law enforcement would help. But if tests and driver training were effective it would reduce the number of people developing these bad habits.

    Also the same goes for people sitting happily in the middle lane. They aren't confident (or maybe capable) enough to deal with merging traffic and changing lanes themselves when needed.

    Where will the people of Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo etc etc take these tests as there are no motorways near them or should they be exempt?

    All bar Mayo contain dual carriageways.

    The M7/M9 and M4/M6 merge are on 2 lane dual carriageways. A dual carriageway has the same rules as goes lanes as a motorway does, anyway.

    Would an email campaign to TD's along the N7, M7, M8, M9 and city west help at all in relation to getting funding for this badly badly needed upgrade? It's a massive pain in the neck for thousands of people every day.

    They should just build a toll gate and use that to fund the improvement. People from Kinnegad, Navan or Dundalk have a pay a toll to reach Dublin, let those in Waterford and Portlaoise do likewise. Or maybe just toll the new lane.

    right let's put another toll at Portlaoise. People coming from Cork and parts of Kerry only have three tolls already to reach the Airport.

    Also governmemt housing/employment policy has forced a commuter belt that needs access

    There was a proposal for tolling the M7 before but it was dropped quite quickly. How could you justify adding a toll to a 32 year old motorway. Toll roads are usually in place to pay for the construction of said motorway. Adding a toll to the M7 would drive thousands of cars back into Newbridge/Naas. As it is there is too many tolls in this country considering the road tax we pay already. Why the hell would you suggest a new one.
    If you tolled the M9 you would kill it overnight it would end up like the toll roads in Portugal.... empty. The Government should upgrade the damn road and cough up the money. Why it was prioritised over the M11 , M17/M18 , N25 New Ross bypass is beyond me. For those who live at these locations and will moan about everything Dublin focused, Yes it should be considering Dublin is the only urban centre with over 1 million people so road projects should be prioritised around the city especially one as important and necessary as this upgrade.

    I couldn't agree more Jeff, we already pay far more for our cars than our European neighbours, not to mention a much higher road tax, so if you ask me there are more than enough tolls already in this country. You also have well over a third of the country's population living in the Dublin/Kildare area, not to mention Dublin being the centre of the business economy in this country, so whether people like it or not the majority of road funding and public transport funding should go to Dublin and surrounding counties such as Meath, Wicklow and Kildare which are all commuter counties.

    If you read the planning docs (freely available on KCC website) the planning was tied to the upgrade of the sallins road roundabout (not started) and the motorway upgrade (dropped for now). Its a disgrace. In 4 weeks time Kerry will have 800+ people heading to the new site, while also keeping Birch house and having 350 ppl there.

    As soon as planning permission was granted for the widening scheme, funding should have been provided for this. It is of vital importance on one of the busiest roads in the country. They seem to be waiting for the giveaway budget to announce any infrastructure investments. Delaying construction by probably two years from planning permission being granted just to give politicians a better chance of being elected. They should be turfed out for dragging their feet.

    If you read the planning docs (freely available on KCC website) the planning was tied to the upgrade of the sallins road roundabout (not started) and the motorway upgrade (dropped for now). Its a disgrace. In 4 weeks time Kerry will have 800+ people heading to the new site, while also keeping Birch house and having 350 ppl there.
    This might hurry things up and be for the best, given that they only do stuff here come crisis time on the infrastructure front...

    This road would break your heart at times. 70 minutes from the Curragh to Naas junction 9 yesterday. Just make the funding available and get on with it.

    There was an incident yesterday at J11 holding up traffic, in addition to all the extra traffic from Waterford & Kilkenny
