What's the Paddy Power ad? Youtube won't open at all for me...

the ad starts with someone saying how they can't wait for ladies day at an event so they can check out all the good look ladies, and Paddy Power says we're gonna make things more interesting by sending transgender ladies along to the event. the ad then goes on to show various trans women, the voice over calling them men, refering to them as male, showing one coming out of the men's toilets... basically the whole premise of the ad is Paddy Power saying "We're gonna trick you into finding MEN attractive! HAHAHAHAHA!"

one of the most seriously dehumanizing and harmful stereotypes to transgender women is that they're out to "trick" unsuspecting straight guys, it's a trope that paints trans women as predatory. The Paddy Power ad is just another in a long line of media depictions that reinforces this trope, just like the disgusting TV show There's Something About Miriam, and Jerry Springer's horrific staged antics... it's feeding into cultural attitudes towards trans women, in a culture that already hates and despises us, and all too often seems to want to cause us harm. I won't say that the ad is "offensive" because I think that being offended isn't the correct response to this, it's not relevant. this ad, I think, is dangerous in that it reinforces public opinion about a very tiny and extremely vulnerable minority.

Sometimes I can't tell if I'm just angry or if I have a form of touretts. If it was the latter life would be so much easier cuz I really want to tell everyone to **** off right now, without being offensive.

there were trans women cast in the ad, but that doesn't make it any less disgusting and reprehensible. sure There's Something About Miriam also featured an actual, live, honest-to-god trans person, omg! still a horrible program

I doubt it's purpose was to offend anyone.

I'd say that's exactly what they had in mind, outrage drums up publicity. I'd say it probably turned out exactly like they wanted.

Prostitution is still, in my opinion, degrading and dangerous even though many women make the choice to sell their bodies for money. Just because some trans gender people were in the ad doesn't mean other trans gender men or women won't be upset by the advert. Maybe Paddy Power thought that trans gender people wouldn't complain about it because there were 'real' trans people in it.
I'm surprised that trans gender women would agree to be essentially laughed at for the purposes of advertising, but I'm not going to judge anyone's choice to make a few bob being in a TV ad.

If their goal was to get peoples attention they've got it, but not from the ad itself, but from you discussing it.

I don't find the ad offensive.

    Spot on.
I don't think I would have ever heard of that Hunky Dory's ad only for the allegations of sexism and controversy over it.

    well good for you

the ad caused a great deal of personal hurt for me, not only did I find the ad horrible, I was there when my girlfriend checked her facebook and saw it, and saw just how upset and angry it made her. it really hurt to see how the ad affected someone I care about so deeply.

I don't find the ad offensive.
That doesn't mean that other people won't find it offensive - particularly an ad that picks on as many offensive stereotypes as this one does.

This doesn't surprise me at all from Paddy Power though - a company known for such gems as ads where odds were offered on whether old women would make it across a road.

Oh I know that. I don't tend to get offended by any ad's though. Their purpose is to grab attention and if that's what it does well then they've won.

Dropping back in before dropping back out again - been sick since Monday, but still going to work when i probably shouldn't be. Can't seem to shake this feeling of sadness that I have atm, can't seem to get my head around work or anything, feels like I'm stuck so far down a hole that there is no point in trying to get out. Been trying a number of ways to get out of it, but its just not happening for me tbh :(

Laptop lead decided to give up at the weekend, so fairly annoyed about the whole thing. Inspector also arrived yesterday - thought I sent her an email saying I didn't have the hall, but apparently I didn't - so will more than likely end up getting another visit, was very annoyed at the fact that she came on a day that I thought I didn't have a class even because the hall was being prepped for the mock exams.

Gonna unsub from this thread again, won't be back to check cos its too easy to post, PM always open - see ye all soon, hope ye all are doing well

Shortly after pressing snooze this morning I heard a dog screeching downstairs. Que everyone jumping up out of bed to the aid of screeching dog. The boy dog had been on my bed and was trying to get out of the room as quickly as me, he got in the way of the door and BAM door hits my big toe. Feel pain. Don't care. Run to other dog. Find out my dad caught her paw in the back door while forcing her out in the rain. Look down. Blood everywhere. It's not the dogs.

Toe has barely stopped bleeding all day. I know how she felt. Only she's not in pain anymore and I am. :(

He's had it over a month, the amount of time spent playing has been spiraling upward in the past two weeks. For someone like me who's a gamer themselves it feels kind of weird to be saying that it's started to get out of hand. Like, I used to play epic runs of Black and White, and we spent a lot of time playing Silent Hill but this is something different. I'm actually going to have to have a chat with him about it!

I'm a WoW and now Star Wars widow, and as I don't play anything like that myself it gets damn boring. He seems to think that it's okay to spend 12+ hours playing if one of his characters is a big boobed kick ass girl who bears a resemblance to me physically or has my name

Why is asking a guy out such a fecking ordeal? I'm having to work myself up to asking him to go for a drink with me, and this is someone who was flirting like mental with me for the last week. He's busy this week, with collegey stuff so haven't really spoken to him in a day or two and I'm actually annoyed at how in my head he now is... :/

Anyone know if telepathy to make them ask YOU out works?

Speaking as a guy, being asked out by a girl is awesome, we like that. dont make a big deal of it but make it clear its a date, like when you get talking to him again just ask if he wants to go for a drink with you, if hes bring flirty and you know he likes you go for it, whats there to lose?

Isn't it funny? Men are supposedly crap at taking hints, yet are the ones who've had to do the asking out, and women get terrified about asking guys out even though the guys are apparently delighted when they do.

Something went wrong somewhere, methinks! :p

I never really understood the idea that women couldnt/ shouldnt do the asking out.
