As I said a year ago in this very thread, I care so little about Jurassic Park sequels that Dinosaurs with Guns would actually significantly increase my interest in a fourth film.

I think they should just give the world the Terrible Thunder-Lizards movie it needs.

Haha, wtf? Was this a serious, actual attempt to get JP4 made, or just some hail-mary script rattled together by some scripters, chancing their arm?

Don't have any mad desire to see a new JP film, but if I had the choice I certainly wouldn't think this bonkers, Roger Corman'esque idea would be a good idea.

I should be really excited by this news, but for some reason it fills me with dread!

Still, Jaffa and Silva did a good job breathing life back into another cherished sci-fi IP (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), so maybe they can do the same again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

That T-Rex from the first film is still great to see in both it's CGI and animatronic state.

No Stan Winston this time round, though I well imagine his studio will be taking on the dinos.

The film, which will be shot and released in 3D, does not yet have a director

Yeah, seeing it on the big screen again last year (or was it the year before?) was great. Most of the effects in the films haven't aged a day, the T-Rex scene in particular.

No director, but it'll absolutely be shot in 3D and already has a release date? That's not in the least bit encouraging.
Plus the writing team doesn't exactly have one excited either - their last flick was 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' (which I thought was hopelessly bland); their last before that was the Tom Sizemore 1997 monster-flick The Relic - hardly a sterling CV.

Jurassic Park still looks great though, it really hasn't aged a day, but let's be honest: with 3D on the table & an immovable deadline, I can't see how they won't use CGI for their dinosaurs.

I guess it really works well when you mix animatronics with CG. But I thought the reveal with the Brachiosaur has really aged the most.

Rise of the Apes was a great movie imo , I look forward to seeing what they do with this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,419 ✭✭✭allanb49

I liked rise of the apes it was a solid story and not as convoluted as return to planet of the apes or whichever one followed the saga of Nero (could be wrong on the name)

Relic, I remember watching it, for a second I thought it was mimic which I really like, great lil monster movie

Mimic and Relic where very similar now that I read up on it, saw both, but many moons ago, there's worse movies out there to be honest, but i'm always a optimist

Wisest course of action here is to dial back expectations to the bare minimum, best way to save disappointment; though I appreciate that might be difficult for a mod of the Palaeontology forum ;)

Watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes today. Good little movie overall. Hopefully the writers can keep or improve the level of quality for JP4.

Yeah, I'm gonna need you to keep that optimism.

Worst case scenario is a lot worse than a film "with dinosaurs in."

Hmmm, could be interesting, though I didn't think there wasn't anything particularly unique or noteworthy about the directing in Safety..., plus I'm a bit cagey about small-time directors getting propelled into a marquee blockbuster like this, it can go a bit wrong sometimes. Still though, better to give an up-comer a chance than hand the reigns over to a rent-a-hack.

The danger is the studio could be hiring him because it will be easy for them to get their way with how they want the film to be. David Fincher and Alien 3 spring to mind.

    Hope not though.

    .

Exactly the first thing I thought of too. He'd be better off walking now and keep building his profile/career steadily.

I'd rather see the movie in the hands of a 'newbie' than a 'jobber'. I mean, we could have gotten John Moore, Michael Bay or Joe Johnston (again)....

hey you leave Michael Bay out of the Moore/Johnston comparison, a hack he may be but he's at least got the visual flair thing down.

Yeah, but if Micheal Bay was at the helm you'd be damn sure there'd be a dinosaur testicles gag.. or three.

That said, Bay for a Dino-Riders movie could be fun...

    *gets pen*

That reminds me, there WAS a bit in the Lost World book where a T. rex humped one of the vehicles...

Ah now, Johnston doesn't deserve to be lumped in with a hack like Moore; Captain America was fun, and had a lot in common with Johnston's The Rocketeer so he gets a definite pass in my book. I can also forgive him for The Wolfman as the production of that was something of a trainwreck (and didn't really deserve the kicking it got anyway). Plus, I thought JP3 was much more fun and structured than The Lost World...

Flicking through this thread though, I'm reminded that this picture already has a release date and 3D as a prerequisite, so my cynic senses are tingling & suspect Trevorrow won't have much creative control on this vehicle.

Didn't realise J.J. did Captain America. Massive redemption so.

As a side note, I am amazed that quite a few people seem to prefer Jurassic Park 3 to TLW. JP3 really is an awful piece of filmmaking.

Along with Cap and the brilliant Rocketeer he also made October Sky which wasn't a bad film either. I wouldn't consider him a hack at all, though JP3 was pants.

I guess I wrote him off after making Jp3, Hidalgo and The Wolfman in that order - a bad decade.

Admittedly, it has been a long time since I saw both sequels, but I seem to recall enjoying the grim tone & atmosphere of #3, along with the more straightforward plotting; Lost World felt like Spielberg on autopilot, a hack-job adaptation of the novel (which itself wasn't great, true) and a film that somehow made a T-Rex rampage through San Diego feel dull & pedestrian.
I also remember the irritating child character managing to somersault-kick a raptor through a wall, so that's enough reason to hate on #2 ;)
