Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Training plan? My training will be basic, cover as much as possible up to a month to go, then relax, it's not a race, you just need enough to get through it. 'twas far from VO2 maxs and thresholds I was rared.

im with Havoc on this one.. you cant make friends with science :D. my training plan will be to cycle lots and far!

im running tiagra compact 50-34 at the moment with a 25-11. am i right in thinking 28 is as big as i can go? whatever i can get, im not fitting it til the day the boat leaves, so when i hit that first hill and i think to myself 'i wish i had a lower gear' i will indeed have a lower gear! :D .. and soon after i will wish for a lower lower gear :p

Should this not be the training for when you get home? A good week in the Alps always did Jan Ullrich the power of good.

I'm tentatively interested in this endeavour. I'll watch with interest until I can give a proper committment.

I''d be interested in this, is the Riad Pyreneen an officail event or just a well known route?

Not finding anything really on the net so can someone give some more details or post a link to the official site?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 395 ✭✭Coronal

It's a semi permanent Randonee, which can be ridden between June and September. Basically, you need to get stamps at controls along the way, and finish within 100 hours. This is rather generous for a Brevet of 710 km long, but that's mostly due to the climbing. There's loads of time to get a proper night's sleep in a hotel/hostel/campsite along the way.

This is a pretty good description of it: http://www.velopeloton.com/raid-pyrenees/

This is the site of the founding club: http://www.ccb-cyclo.fr/raid_pyreneen.html

I've heard back from velopeloton and he's become fully booked so we can rule that out. The advice though is invaluable. To see how much and when is a good time to get a van on a ferry, we'll have to wait until the end of the year/ beginning of next year when the timetables come out and we can see prices. I'm still aiming for July though. If there's a chance of going to a stage then I see the penultimate stage at Brive on July 20th as the stage to take in. If anyone comes up with ideas and that, post them here, even if the Pyrénées sounds a bit far fetched, I'm sure something else could be organised.

the pyrenees sound great. I would love to do the raid (or just lots and lots of hills). July should be good for me. Thanks captain!

Ferry Timetables are out so I can start planning. Pricing was looking terrible until the good people at marble city travel stepped in to give us a special discount on the ferry. He can't do a whole lot on the accomodation side but will pass on any discounts as we're related. I'm thinking Monday 23rd July until Friday for the raid. If anyone wants to speak to me one on one, PM me your phone number, good time to phone and I'll get back to you. I hope to come back to ye with a final price very soon but I'm hoping for under a grand, actually balls, if it comes to over a grand I can't afford it anyway.

I rode the RP independently in 2009. It's a fantastic ride. I was pretty fit at the time but being less fit wouldn't be a problem -- it'd take longer but all you need to do is eat, ride and sleep, so there's no rush.

Yeah, when I cycled the summer of 2010, I was in 40 degrees every day for a week, I think I was going through one to two litres of water an hour. People need to remember it's not a race and you can stop at a shop for water, I think it's less than a euro for two litres in most mini-marts. I'm still hoping to do a pre-raid cycle. I'm on holidays next week and will work on it Tuesday and Wednesday and present it to my brother and see what discounts he can do.

LOL. Astra if you sold half your campag blinged up bikes you could afford to take Concord out of retirement and fly us all to Biarritz and still have enough for a full Mavic style support car and a broom wagon.

    seconded. :)

I am a Definitely Maybe for this - currently 80% depending on job status in Q1 next year.

I have money put aside for a possible pre-season training trip, which if it doesn't go ahead would make this a 100%.

Haha its still just a planetx :) anyway there is not enough cash flow to fund everything so i need to plan accordingly (and somehow make the OH agree).

BTW, this is the van, I don't see more than 10 bikes going into it, assuming they're in bike bags.

    Capt.
Will the van be available from Ireland or is it being hired in France.
It would be great if bikes could be transported there and back, meaning one can fly with just an overnight bag to say Biarritz or wherever works.

If all goes well, we're supposed to be getting the ferry a bit cheaper and we're paying for van and driver to leave Ireland and return with the bikes. I reckon it'll cost €110 per head compared to €80 on the plane, personally I'd pay the extra €30.

I'll be coming from Germany, more than likely, so shouldn't need van space. Apart from possibly start and end transfers if I'm feeling lazy.

Tentatively in, i ll confirm 100% before the end of the year. Meanwhile if you have to take a decision before that then please do without counting me.

Not part of the Boards trip but the 'Gang' are going to the Pyrenees this year and more than likely taking this approach.

The plan is for a few (3) to transport the bikes and kit to Lourdes (tentatively suggested as base of ops) by van having hired here and taken the ferry to Frqnce while everyone else flys to Biarritz/Toulouse with light luggage and bussing it to Lourdes from there. Looking forward to it now - will look out for boards jerseys while over there if it turns out the two expeditions are around the same time
