Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. LA Fitness is a different gym as far as I know. It is on a different premises anyway. I think I did a trial session there years ago and wasn't impressed. One of those highly image-conscious gyms without great facilities as far as I remember.

Actually, you are right there. Apologies....
LA fitness is a no go.....their contractors are from the UK, so it takes twice as long to get anything fixed.
There is no permenant "assistant manager" (the person who does everything), and they are constantly cutting corners in terms of maintenance.
They are controlled bu the UK in EVERYTHING.....so the staff have little control over anything.
And the ladies toilets have problems with the showers that will never be fixed due to cost!

Can anyone tell me how much it is to join Crunch Fitness? Theres a new one opening in Tallaght

I've joined the Tallaght one (it doesnt open until the first week of December though).

No Joining Fee. . .EUR 65 a month. . .you have to pay EUR 100 (one off) if you also want to use Temple Bar / DL gyms.

went down to the new one in rathfarnham yesterday. its called jackie skelly and its located opposite to nutgrove sc. im considering joining. it seems like an ok gym, good facilities. for me (19 year old male) the total price for the year is 810 euro plus a 35 joining fee. this seems a bit expensive to me? i want a gym close to the rathfarnham area but this seems a bit pricey?

If the LA fitness is anything like the ones in the UK I wouldn't touch them....

    Problems I have had include:

Told lies when was being sold membership so I would sign (this was admitted later when I asked them, but was told there was nothing I could do to complain).

Swimming pool often closed as not enough staff to look after it

Brought in temp gym staff who had no clue how to use the equipment (this was admitted to me)

Terrible staff - most of them were on part time jobs after school!!!

What was stated in my contract was changed half way through the year (e.g. getting towels, etc). Towels may seem very petty, but when you cycle in to work / gym you don't want to be leaden down with wet towels!

I sent 3 letters of complaint in to them, and only one of them was acknowledged, with a "will come back to you within the next week". I never heard from them again.

The only satisfaction I got was that I managed to convince numerous people not to join that gym... and hopefully they spread the word:D

Nice big place with tonnes of machines. Machines share large TV screens over head.

However there are no mats to warm up in front of mirrors, in fact no padded mats anywhere I could see.

Free weight section only included one set of each weight and with only one other user today, we both clashed a few times on weights which was annoying. The area is carpeted and not rubber which felt odd to me.

Many machines are in pounds and not kilos but Im sure that is quite common??

No bench or incline bench apart from the smiths machine units.

The pool is nice and there are nice views of the sea. Sauna and JAcuzzi what you would expect.

FOr a gym that is brand new it does not appear as clean or as sharp as I would expect either.

The sales woman had not a clue about fittness and said ah sure youll know more than me any way a few times....

Fee was 60 odd p/m and a large joining fee I cant remember.
Member ship is currently very low and at lunch time there was only about 10/15 in the whole place.

I have to say for €720 a year that sounds extremely over priced for what it provides

Just in case I was not clear I was very unimpressed with the gym, I wanted to keep the review as factyual as possible.

Compared to Northwood or westwood it is piss poor, this is mainly down to a non existant free weights area.

It may be quite good for thiose who do not use free weights.

On the plus I pushed a record on the Smiths machine I never did on the bench :) for obvious reaons...

    Arena Fitness Tallaght
A brand new gym - Arena Fitness - has opened up in the Tower hotel, in Tallaght. A sign outside says the first 500 members are free for a year or something like that. No idea what it's actually like though.
    Contact http://www.towerhoteldublin.com/ for more info.

    Joining fee: n/a
    Monthly: €50
    Annual: €575

Just re-joined the Iveagh. It's seems to have been rejigged, new cybex equipment. It seems quieter than a few years ago. Good mix of equipment
They have non fitnees instructors manning the reception now. And the cleaners do the cleaning while you work out. And non of them smile, and they're not into commuciating.

    hi

anyone got any views on the Crunch gym in Westmanstown?

    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 135 ✭✭Kiya

i was a member there and decided not to renew my membership due to the fact that theres never any staff around to help when needed.
the selection of classes which they run are often cancelled due to "lack of interest" or my favourite the "instructor called in sick".
also when i received my renewal quote it had actually increased, compared to joining new! surely as a returning member i would be offered an incentive?

there should be an incentive alright, especially as u said they're service could be improved.

how much is it there anyway?

to be honest,i wouldnt go to classes or rely on a lot of help from instructors. i would be interested in main gym+pool+saunas etc. how do u find these?

    thanks

Are there any members here? Would like to join, a few questions though
    1. Joining fee-how much is it?
    2. Monthly fee-how much is this too?
    3. Classes, are there early morning classes like spin? How often?
    4. Instructors that take these classes, are they good? Motivating?
    5. Programs, how often are they renewed?
    6. Swimming pool, is there one there? I don't know how to swim and want to learn.
I know i can call them and ask all this questions but would prefer to get opinions from other members..:)
    Thanks

Monkstown works out very expensive if you are going there 3 days a week year round though.

You can also join for 3 months, 6 months or a year. Membership for a year costs 450.

Have a look here for all the details.

Thanks Liamm - spotted that a few weeks ago and meant to update my post.

The girl I live with has joined Newpark Fitness Centre on Newtownpark Avenue for the same money...now that is one seriously compact gym!
3 treadmills, 3 stepping machines, 3 bikes, 2 floor mats and a tiny free weights area all in a room the size of my bedroom!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22 happybee

I joined Jackie Skellys on Clarendon street. Its very very mediocre, bordering on sh*te....if you are the nervouse type, then its pretty bad as there are not many fitness staff on the floor to talk to.
And general maintenance is pretty nasty aswell.
BUT if you're just looking for a work-out then its fine.

HI, anyone going to The Fitness Dock on Camden Street? Is it any good? I am a member of the westwood at the moment but as I live nearby the Fitness dock was thinking it would make more sense as I would go more often.

Has anyone been down to Crunch Fitness in Tallaght yet? Went down last night to have a look. €65 per month with no joining fee till the end of the week. €100 extra if you want to use the other gyms!!

What do people think of the free weights area?

    Thanks!

A friend of mine who is an ex-gym manager joined the Fitness Dock, and its not great either.
If you're the type who doesnt need guidance in any way, then its fine. But apparently the machines are never maintained so she avoids the treadmills because an un-oiled treadmill can result in destroying your achilles tendon, and knee ligaments apparently!

I think quality-wise,youre better off staying in Westwood.

Anyone join or check out this Gym care to post a review?

It looks like a building site at the moment, I've heard it is expensive and fairly disorganised. It seens to have attracted a large portion of the, lets be polite, "local teenage tracksuit brigade" both as staff and members which doesn't marry with the price list, which actually only exists in the manager's head. Something gives I suspect:confused: I've not heard much about the gym itself though.

Good for you. My experience hasn't been good and I know a few people who had a similar one. Also, I don't give a flying fück about the Temple Bar Crunch since I have never been there, I was commenting on the Dun Laoghaire branch.

would have to agree with Qwertz , dont know which "Crunch in dun laoghaire" youve been going to eth0, unless they have a second gym im not aware of ?

im in the place 4 times a week bout 2 hours a time and have the following issues

    1) if its remotely busy the queues for the weights machines are huge
and thats if there not broken

    2) the showers / changing areas are manky . used band aids and what not littering the shower area as well as items of wet used clothing in the showers themselves

    3) getting into the gym is hassle you have to scan your badge which in itself is cool but the muppet behind the desk spends ten mins looking at your file photo to decide if your the same person b4 buzzing you in

4)opening hours are pretty bad as well . 7am - 10pm weeknights and closed by 7pm on sat and sun (not great)

5)Overall the price paid is in no way reflected in the quality of service / equipment provided

if your not a member avoid like the plague

A friend of mine, who is a seasoned gym goer, went down here to have a look. He told me they didnt even have a barbell bench press, and when he asked about it they said they have no plans on getting one in.
Suffice to say, he left pretty quickly after hearing that.

As for crunh in Dun laoghaire, i had a viewing there and was disgusted at the tiny little weights room with the benches in it. How can they expect people to workout in that room, with that heat is beyond me. The only plus i saw in that gym was the quality of the females using it. ;)

I recently joined (2 weeks) and i have to say it's a KIP.
    • It stinks!!
    • In the ladies changing room, there is only one bin and two toilets??
    • No cotton wool, wet bags for wet clothes or a clock?
    • No classes in the morning, they claim no one attends so why bother. The gym is pretty packed in the morning; they need to create awareness.
    • The personal trainers there can't give a rats ass about your query they shut you up before you start talking "I am not an instructor, i am a PT"
    • In the ladies bathroom the paint and tiles are falling off.
Also the water facilities is bad! How are you supposed to fill a bottle? There is only one btw
The only reason why i go there is because of LOCATION, i would not advice anyone to go there

What are you talking about? One Escape is a very good gym and its not closed. I have been a member for over a year now and am happy. Its never crowded. Only seen it crazy busy in January and thats the norm for most gyms anyway cos all the newbie 3 week users all rush to lose the post Christmas weight. However, if you weight train a lot, I would look else where as the weights area tends to get crowded with four people. Although a lot of gyms tend to be like that.

Having said that. The staff are all very nice and helpful. It might be a bit pricer too than a few others. Best to shop around first.

    CITY GYM GALWAY
Started going here about 3 weeks ago while up in Galway.
Think its a really good gym,has a regular amount of cardio equipment and every type of weight machine you can think of. The Gym consists of many types of athletes, Power Lifters,Olympic Power Lifter,Body Builders, Rugby players, plenty of people in keeping fit.It has a sauna in the changing rooms which is great after a hard workout.
All in all i was really happy with the Gym.
Its a serious gym thats not designed for people wanting to watch Plasma Screens.
    Very Happy 9/10:D

Dirt cheap. €295 a year, no joining fee.
    Has a 25m swimming pool.
    Lots of modern cardiovascular equipment.
    Modern weight machines.
Both light free weights and heavy free weights areas.
Showers with temperature that you control. Individual shower stalls.
    Changing areas are cleaned regularly.
It's big. There's equipment spread across two floors.
Don't know about during the day, but if you go there for the swimming in the evenings, its not very pleasant. Water temperature in pool is generally cold and horseplay in the pool nearly always ignored by staff. Could do with a supervisor.

I've looked around all the gyms in Blanc and Westpoint is the best overall...specially for value. Peak times at the start of the week are the busiest, but any other times are fine.

I live in Tyrrelstown and I travel Cellbridge all the time and always go through Leixlip...its max 10 mins from Westpoint.

Im looking for 2 other people to join Westpoint to get the special offer. Its €550 for 2 people or €695 for 3.

    Any takere on this :)
