Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

nothing against the use of laptops there, but only if they use them in the ground floor place. so bloody annoying trying to study when the person beside u comes in with a laptop and click clicks there way through "interesting sites" like bebo when other folks want place to study.

added to that being asked to keep an eye on it whilst they go for a 2 hour lunch. like ya!
One thing that really annoys me is nosy people who look at what other people are doing on the internet.

Also would be handy if the library would open 24hrs during december for exams. They do that in a few colleges around ireland.

if you are worried about people looking at what you're at on the internet; have you something to hide. ;)

it would be handy for 24 hour access; but im not complaining; when i started, the library was shut at 9 each evening and closed at weekends apart from a few hours on a satuday morning when most people were in bed anyway.

That really gets my goat, why dont they bloody well improve the wireless net access on the second floor as well for flips sake and I'm sure it wouldnt kill em to put a few more internet cables in...

8 hours today in the library trying to gt work done on an fyp that had to be put in the backburner due to having so many other projects to do.
But could a person be allowed to work in peace?!!? NO

Every 2 minutes someone would come and talk to the person sitting next to me it was ridiculous. I tried turning up the volume on my music, but then I couldnt concentrate properly.

If you want to talk to someone, piss off somewhere quiet like the stairs!!!

Library will be open 24 hours at some stage in the future, so sez the librarians anyway. Good to see the plaza open late too, gives a bit of life to the canopy area in the evenings.

    Did you ask them to???

If not, shame on you, you should have told them to **** off like everyone else!!

It's the same with people using bebo on compters - if you have a project to do, get the security guard to tell them to **** off aswell!!!

Ya 24hr library would be great especially during exam times, it would make cramming a hell of a lot easier

Incidentally someone came in to me at work yesterday to know how to send an email to all students because she got one.

I told her, and I quote:

"you don't because if you do you'll get an angry email from me telling you you're a pain in the hole"

One of my colleagues thought it was harsh, but she won't go sending an email, will she!!

Also, at least one of those emails was only to people whose names begin with letters from A-E. IDIOTS, I'll give them A&E if I get my hands on them!

About 20 people came into me last year asking either how or asking me to send one (having been sent to me by lecturers). Only one of two answers was ever given: one was almost exactly like yours above and the other was "I can but I won't and here's why..."

Realised during the week that I can't set up a server-side Outlook filter with an automatic response for the allstudents address as it's not in the address book list. Bit annoying that, while if there's a workaround I'll eventually find it, if anyone knows how to add a server-side filter for a hidden distribution list, please let me know by PM.

Well, they're exuberant young kids who kick doors occasionally at building openings and put up lots of posters.

Side note: I was told by someone the other night (someone being some guy in my class that I didn't realise till then suffered from myopia) that I had been the one that (and I quote) "went mental" at the psudo-protest outside the ICO building the day Martin Cullen came to town. It took me a few minutes to realise that his bad eye-witness of a friend must have noticed me going to the door that was blocked by security guards, failed to notice me getting in and, not having noticed my disappearance, assumed that I was the socialist youth kid taking a sugar-fuelled jump at the door. Obviously I wasn't, indeed I was nice and dry from the rain inside at the time, giggling both at the footlaunchers outside and inside at the egos of a small number of the ICO crowd, specifically the woman on the internal door who thought she was controlling access to the Oval Office.

I wouldn't say that the SY crowd are a bunch of tards, though I find it hard, even using their own logic, to reconcile their stated views on the introduction of college fees (a hard no) with the views you'd expect of a group that professes to be on the side of the tired, the poor, the huddled masses and so on. Even a fuzzy socialist like me finds it hard to believe at times that they're any more than a group of middle-class kids rebelling against their parents.

Why do people have to be uncivil to others? Ok I'm no angel myself but most of the time I try to be nice...rather than telling someone that they're a "pain in the hole" could you not have explained why you wouldn't do it for her and why she couldn't do it herself?

I thought this had been solved to a certain extent I seem to remember it being mentioned that access to distribution lists had been removed from the general populous of UL and restricted to a lucky few. Oh well it could just be me imagining stuff....if not it's refreshing to see that things haven't changed.

Granted I still think there's a technical solution to the problem of peoples stupidity like I suggested before a message board of some manner for stuff like room rental along with removing the right to mass mail people.

From what I remember about Exchange Server I don't think it's doable for a non public distribution list. The closest thing I can think of is an out of office reply but that will apply to everything that ends up in your Inbox (of course this can be useful for those days when you're too hung over to reply to mails). Then again it's not what you're looking for so it's probably not much use to you.

This is my generic response to fools that keep spamming me with "rooms for rent emails":
If you want to advertise a room then use the ACCOMMODATION NOTICE BOARDS!! Go to the ACCOMMODATION OFFICE and advertise there!!

You are sending stupid SPAM emails that arent wanted and clog up inboxes!!

Go to this website and advertise either http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=975

    But STOP SENDING MASS EMAILS!!!

    Have some cop on!

And this is the respose I received today:
I must apologies about sending the stupid SPAM email to you. I am aware that they aren't wanted and are a great nuisance to the vast majority of students, however, I was simply hoping to find somebody out there who does want it!

Thanks for the advice about the accommodation office, I was not aware of such a board where I could advertise the rooms.

Despite my absent mindedness that somebody could get so very angry about an email, I assure you that I am fully copped on.

Again, I deeply regret causing such stress, especially as exam time is looming.

I don't know what the big deal is about. Sure, they are annoying, but only if you open them. The facility to delete an email before opening it is available, so why not just do that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭ergonomics

For me, it's not receiving the spam that is annoying, it's the fact that students can send it. I'm a Class Rep and I can't even email my course, all 5 of them, but then idiots can send an email about a room for rent to all students. ITD should be stopping students from sending an email to more than 5 persons, and anyone who sends out spam should be blocked from emailing anyone but lecturers. IMO anyway.

Edit: Before anyone says it, I know I can get permission to email them but I manage fine, it's the principle that matters.

They are not just annoying if yo open them!

The student email holds feck all, and having a 1MB email sent around by some idiot blocking it up is ridiculous, and that happens regardless of whether I open it or not!

Just because they dont have the common sense to use the accommodation board/office, or use daft.ie, or other internet sites to advertise, we have to suffer with a constant barrage of the same sort of emails...

I was told that for primary research for a module this semester that I wasnt allowed to email the entire student list, or the 4th years in UL, or the 4th year BBS class, or even the people taking the module with my questionnaire.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭ergonomics

Just got my 4th one of the day. This one was so big it instantly left my inbox full. I also got a response from Gordon Young who said he can't do anything and I have to go to the Disciplinary Committee. I'm sure they'd be thrilled to hear from me.

As usual, ITD does eff all. Do they actually do ANY work? I remember being in a lecture the other week and the computer wouldn't work. The lecturer got someone from ITD in. They couldn't fix it so lecturer announces the lecture is cancelled, and then one of students notices the computer is unplugged.

    I wish I was joking.

Oh, that'll be fun tomorrow given that I'm planning on being there all day with all my notes and books on a screen. A screen that, incidentally, gets read.

    Now, on to higher matters.

Firstly the bus service has been restored on Tuesday and Thursday nights (the bus to town that was suspended two weeks ago, not the nitelink, which I assume is running all nights during exams as usual). That's good. Especially given the unlikelihood of trouble from anyone on the buses given that everyone's concerned about exams, not going drinking and students aren't back till the end of January after next week.

Secondly I put something about the spam issue in the Limerick Indo that was out today. It's at the bottom of page 25, the page where December has an extra 'r' in it at the top of the page for some reason. Comments from some people and a reply from ITD included. Balanced and fair, y'see?

That has got to be the stupidest thing I've heard in a good while. Why not say that laptops must be kept to the one area instead of banning them altogether? If I decide to go in tomorrow and they try and tell me to turn off my laptop, while I'm sitting at a laptop networked desk, they can run and jump. What's the point of having such desks if you can't even use our laptops? It's not our fault if people are idiots and sit at the desks with an internet cable sticking out of it. Go sit somewhere else.

Wireless coverage is very good (the best in fact) in the EDC. The old EDC, which now doesn't have any desks as it's now short loans. Big sections on floor 1 where bandwidth is 1Mps (compared to 54 in the old EDC) or zero and quality "fair" or "poor" (or non-existent). Feel free to tell the library rep that, especially considering the library was considering putting in for funding with Ulster bank to wireless-enable the main courtyard before I checked and found almost all of it to have excellent coverage already. Better library wireless required.

  • Registered Users Posts: 986 ✭✭✭DJCR

Great but demogaphic analysis shows there are now more laptops which leads to greater contention rates ..... slowing down the internet + with a decrease in the number of laptops allowed = more inconvenience to students!!!

I know less laptops = less contention but seriously ...... whats the point in having a laptop if you can't use it.

Oh, you're definitely right there, it's easy to spot in the canteen if you're at the wrong end - usability (and by "usability" I mean opening a simple text page) depends on how many machines are being used in between you and the right side of the canteen.

Library's full of black and grey spots though regardless of contention, they need to put in a few more WAPs to sort the problem. Especially given that ITD are definitely considering the idea of not buying any more public access machines (ever) and assuming that everyone will have their own laptop, most of which will rely on wireless for network and Internet access, for convenience over wired if nothing else. It's probably about two years before they'll have to make that call (and obviously every few years again if they decide to continue buying new machines then) but they're seriously considering it already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,477 ✭✭✭✭cson

A minor detail, but wireless in the library is shoite.

I would have thought (given the institution we're in, that seems to have a fairly lofty opinion of itself) that it wouldn't be an issue but woah no.... barring a networked desk there is absolutely zero chance of ze interweb.

OK, so one section in the library is "read only". It's still so stupid.

I have notes and sample papers on my laptop, and yesterday I wanted to spend the morning going over Microeconomics papers.
What about people who come in late in the morning, or can't get a place on other floors?

Do they always do that during the exams?
Did someone make a complaint about the noise from typing or something?

    It just sounds so stupid!
