Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm heading to UCC next year and just wondering whats the best accomodation for mature students. I've done the whole living on campus, wild parties, crazy shenanigans typeliving and now I would like somewhere quiet,I can put my head down to study. Does UCC have specialised accomodation for postgrads, or can anyone reccomend any off campus accomodation that is suitable?

Dennehys Cross is only for post grad UCC and even if you are a mature student and a previous graduate you cannot stay in Dennehys. It would appear that UCC do not provide any accomodation for mature students which is very unusual! Halls are great fun if it is your first time away from home but not if you are in your 30s.... does anyone know of any other options for mature students for UCC...

Its looking possible that I won't be getting my first choice course and am thinking of booking ucc accommodation just in case..

Just wondering is everywhere booked up at this stage?

dont go! i was there last year. the managment are arseholes, they fine you for anything they can find, the firealarm is constantly going off at 4 in the morning, the rooms and bathrooms are small, its not cleaned properly and its just a sh** hole.

Castlewhite is probably best if you're gonna be based on main campus, Brookfield is better if you're going to be in the Western Gate Building.

Or if you can get a few friends together look for a house, My house wasn't great but it's so much better than student accomidation, No wardens and what not and our landlord was really friendly!

    FYP

and brookfield health sciences building too really due to the bridge it's only a 4/5 min walk

I agree with above. Studio is very small but cheaper! Lived there for two years and loved it. Never had any major problems with Noel/manager or having repairs done. Any south facing rooms were roasting during the year so you definitely wouldn't need any heaters in them for the summer, though they do work!

Best bet is to ask for things that have been broken all year and not causing any hassle whatsoever to be fixed during RAG Week.

No way that can turn out to be a stupid decision.

I asked for that to be fixed two weeks before RAG week and sure how was I to know you'd go on a rum induced rampage destroying everything in sight!!

    Ahhh good times Keano!! :)

Do you guys think it would be a good idea to stay in a single apartment or would it be safer to stay with a few people in vic mills or somewhere?Reason i ask is because i literally cant study when other people are around and really need my own space in order to work.
    thanks

You could always try a share n if your house/flatmates disrupt your studies, just kill 'em all n stuff em in a freezer. Simples ;)

Fairly sure Vic Mills don't offer single apts tbh - a 4 bed isn't bad and tbf you can always stroll over to the brookfield library it's a 4min walk

The Student Village on Carrigrohane Road would be my recommendation. I lived there for 3 years. Quiet, safe and near to the Western Gate building. Warden is very strict with people staying over or coming back after a night out so make sure you have people signed in. It's so convenient - no paying for bills, refuse is all sorted, there's parking, internet and Chorus NTL, and it's also cheaper than the UCC apartments i.e. Vic Lodge, Vic Mills etc. These apartments are also less clinical looking than the UCC apts. Really homely! I loved it there!

I would avoid this if at all possible! It's MILES away from UCC and the student area of the city. I wouldn't consider it the safest place to be if you don't know the city! Also the evenings will be gettin shorter and Cork isn't the place to walking home on your own at night! Never mind that Popes Quay is miles off anyway. Check out the UCC Accommodation list on their website - you can get lists of houses and the landlords are usually really helpful if you ring them. Or else look at the other blocks of apartments - The Spires, Victoria Mills, Victoria Lodge, Castlewhite, Farranlea Hall, The Student Village.

I finished up in UCC last year and spent 4 years in student accommodation. I spent the first 3 years in Farranlea Hall and my last year in The Spires.

Farranlea Hall was a brilliant place to stay as a 1st and 2nd year. I stayed in a 4-bed apartment with 3 of my friends because we requested to live together. All of us were happy with our bedrooms and the kitchen/living area was a decent size. We had some great parties and made loads of friends with other 1st and 2nd years. The wardens were pretty cool as long as things didn't get to mad. I thought the staff were nice but were pretty tough with people who trashed their apartments set off fire extinguishers. To be honest most people thought the parties were worth it - woohooo! We got our deposit back every year as we cleaned up after our mad party nights. FH is only 5-10 mins to campus depending on which building you’re heading for and there is a 24 hour Tesco in Wilton which was the destination of a view midnight runs.;)

I decided to move to The Spires for my last year because it’s quieter, even closer to main campus and you can walk into town in 15mins. The standard of accommodation is good, especially if you can get a room in the newer block. There are also a few really nice pubs close by and Cork's best chipper - Jackie Lennox. Soooooo good.:D

Hi Brian. To be honest I've never really heard of someone getting an apt (let alone a one bed) that's not in one of the student complexes. There is an accommodation listing on ucc's website and sure daft search (college search) may both be helpful though. I have heard the accommodation office are helpful too but haven't used them personally.

a one bed would be extremely pricy if you were living on your own. anything decent generally doesnt go lower than 600 a month!

What do you think of accommodation on Washington street? Would it be advisable to book something there?

Everyone may as well stop recommending Vic Mills cos the waiting list is now above 170. Plus they have started restricting the internet- p2p etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Dave47

fwiw im looking for an apartment also and a room mate. PM if interested- obv wud give more details about me, facebook profile etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Dave47

lol people still applying for that place. In a flood prone area and prone to power outages at the first sign of water, along with bad internet. And the waiting list is 170 for this year lolz

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Dave47

Just finished first year law and looking to setup student accomodation with others. Wud regard myself as pretty easy going and fairly tidy etc. Wud be looking for 2, 3 or 4 bed place depending on amount of people obv. PM if interested, obv il provide u with more info as required. Oh yeah and I play online poker as a part-time job so I will be making sure to get a fast internet connection

The year I first started there, my friend was 200 and something on the waiting list and got in. There was a really long waiting list last year and at the end of it they had empty rooms in September. The price has also gone down this year. Most of the student accommodations restricted p2p as far as I know, but VM didn't until June at least.

Ah yeah. On the one hand the p2p restriction has helped the internet, on the otherhand u cant use bittorrent and online poker which is bad. Wow didnt know so many people pull out- may yet apply myself

  • Registered Users Posts: 457 ✭✭Celtise

Yeah a lot do because most people on the waiting list find something else and of course first years with cao. I also know people just book as a precaution too incase they don't find a house. Gutted to not be back there this year, was some craic there so I'm coming down for all of september just to wish it a proper send off, lease starts 12:00 on 6th September! :D

I always had trouble with bittorrent there but used vuze/azure all last year without a problem. To be honest I would love if they could tell me how much internet I used to use because I'd say it was a couple of GB on a good week even with the lovely sharing network. Would a proxy server work for the poker? I thought they blocked that years ago there...

  • Registered Users Posts: 457 ✭✭Celtise

I'd ignore the length of the waiting list. Places always open up in August/September with many of the list having sorted alternatives.

The only time I remember the power going was when it was flooded and really it think it was a rather fun time all the same. VM got in underground/indoor swimming pool full of rubbish that people were swimming in!

Also all the student accommodations were flooded around there except farrenlea which is a hell hole.

It's the place to be I you're into having sex with virgins as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Dave47

Nah proxy server impossible imo becos poker is an independent program and sites kinda need to track your IP address. I know the UCC network has the poker banned for years so that rules out a lot of other accomodation too. Thats why im not living there cos i do online poker as a part time job. I think poker has only been banned since june 2010 in vic mills but it cud have been earlier. Oh well, at least they have internet- in brookfield u cant even get a phoneline!

you'd be much better off gettin together with a friend and renting a 2 bed apartment somewhere between college and town - crawford hall, fishermans wharf etc

This will be my 4th year living in Vic Mills. Although I had intial problems with Noel aswell that has been sorted out. The price includes all bills for the year and last year it worked at at €130 per week (inc bills). As far as I know prices were lowered slightly this year. It's a nice place to stay, close to college and Wilton. The apartments themselves are fine, although the windows are a bit dodgy as they don't really seem to keep the heat in. The blocks behind Centra are the nicest (G,H,I) as they're the newest.

But overall it's grand. There's a reason I've stayed for so long! Oh and the network is also a great plus too. You can connect to other laptops and hard drives and take films, tv shows, music etc off them. Only a few of us share on the network and I'm one. ;)
