    Zippos will light up if they fall or are thrown in a certain way.
    I know this, i used to smoke and threw it to a mate once when he asked for a light.
    He was sitting on the sofa opposite and it clipped his knee opening the top, then lit while sliding across his leg! There was a lot of flapping of arms and shouting, but luckily no one was hurt!

    Zippos are easy to light under such stupid conditions, hence all the tricks you can watch online, many of them showing what happens when they go wrong as well.

    The OP mentioned "ether well" which can be a name for the fuel section in a zippo type lighter, so if its that type of lighter, then the OP is right to be paranoid IMO.
