Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The country is an economic basketcase. Suicide is on the increase. Make no mistake, this country is run by criminals. Just because we don't live in North Korea, it does not mean the country is fine.

Ireland is a dump. I will agree on that point. Bizarre logic this "Ireland is not a dictatorship" stuff. It's moving pretty fast in that direction, you can be assured of that. Disgusting situation with the Troika and inept Civil servants. Truly deplorable stuff.

I am ashamed to be Irish. I've given the country many chances, but my patience has worn thin. I can't make a real living here, forced emigration essentially. Why should I be proud of a country that has failed myself and many others?

I've given up on Ireland. The Politicians/slavemasters still get paid for this joke. Most people here have been sold to serfdom for the elite. This is just morally reprehensible.

A dictatorship? Which one, if I may ask.

The only sentiment I would disagree with in your post is that it's a dump. Ireland is one of the most stunningly beautiful countries on the planet. Unfortunately, the dictatorship that is the CS/PS and their unions beggars belief.

They carry on as if we were still an affluent country, demanding their "entitlements" as if it were some sort of God-given right, while the politically inept and impotent "Labour Party" (what a joke) cheerlead them in the process, while turning a blind eye to the corruption that is Special Advisors pay, and supporting the financial crucifixion of the working man/woman in order to bail out bankrupt business entities.

And yet - today - we find out that Iceland, who told these vultures to fcuk off, is back in the driving seat. Fair dues to them for having a pair of balls.

The European Federal Union. The steel and coal workers union from which this organisation originated was designed purely for trade matters. Now, they make our laws and control our destiny. Politicians in this small country support the EU gravy train. Greece and Ireland were once proud nations. No more.

Great post in fairness. I suspect the reason Iceland was allowed default is because they weren't shackled to European banks and bondholders. They have always valued independence and refuse to play ball with the EU. Iceland will probably never join the EU after all the negative press lately.

I still think, both the Greek and the Irish are proud people. The Greeks take their protest out to the streets, and the Irish don't agree as a nation to what is demanded by Brussels, it's just those, they elected into Government.

If the Irish and Greeks had any balls, they would have demanded under our Constitutional legislation, that a referendum is required to give people a chance to cancel these bailouts along with Ireland's ejection from the EU. Bank bailouts here are a socialist agenda. If Ireland was more economically right wing like Iceland, we would have told the bankers to fup off long ago.

Socialist thinking is responsible for these bailouts. Corporate Welfare is what these bailout is. Anybody who supports these bailouts is in my eyes, a traitor to this country. People should be made to be responsible for their gambling losses.

I'm glad to see this thread being revived. Since Dunphy's outburst, lots of things have happened to reaffirm his point. Just today alone there were 2 reports that disgusted me. Eamon Gilmore with his €50k add-on to his salary when he was in the opposition and Enda Kenny with €100k. On top of their TD salaries for 'extra duties'. Well done lads, clap on the back. You are politicians. What exactly are 'extra duties'? You do what you can to help run this country as best you can. Not get extra rewards. Gilmore's argument: if it was any organisation an employee gets extra for doing other duties. Bull****. In a job I worked in I was doing the work of people 2 pay grades higher than me and picking up the slack in other areas without so much as a word of thanks, nor was it expected. I did it because it was my job. This sense of entitlement among our elected government makes me sick. Not so much as a flicker of guilt!

The other one was that as of today, more than 1 in every 7 mortgage holders are in arrears. How many of those took out mortgages in the boom years? Could probably narrow that down to 1 in 4 or 5. People are struggling to keep a roof over their heads. I'm not getting into the argument that they were the ones who took the mortgages out etc. Most were encouraged into it for fear that prices were constantly going up. While these poor families are struggling every day, the wasters and scroungers are getting their free houses, benefits and handouts, extremely generous social welfare payments and are laughing all the way to the bookies/pub.

This country is sick. Sick from the very core. There are people in this country who will say that things are fine, we live in a fine country, we should be thankful. You all keep your heads in the sand because things are getting worse and worse.

Can't really blame those, who took the mortgage, as it seems to be popular in Ireland to have your own house. For me it's the banks, who gave out the mortgages to every Dick, Tom and Harry during the boom years, well knowing, that the boom won't last forever.

I'm not blaming them Lars. That's what I'm saying. People were practically forced into taking out mortgages they couldn't afford through scaremongering. People were saying to me at 20 years of age to take out a mortgage! We can't say it's people's fault for taking out the mortgages, they were just the unlucky people who were almost forced into it. Sure everybody jumped on the bandwagon. Many people bought second houses, holiday homes whatever. That was excessive. Others however were young couples scared that if they didn't invest now, they would never afford the ever climbing property prices.

I also think that Kenny & Co. should stop blaming the previous government at every turn. We have to increase x because of the inefficiency of the previous administration, we have to cut y because of the gross mistakes of the previous government. Man up and take responsibility for your decisions!

Iceland have told those vermin to fcuk off and now they have had their credit upgraded to "investment" status, whereas Ireland remains at junk status. Fair dues Iceland, a country that deserves massive respect for standing up for their citzens. Ireland would do well to emulate this stategy before it's too late. Repeal the venomous banking bailouts!!! http://www2.macleans.ca/2012/02/16/a-new-model-for-dealing-with-collapse/

Ireland is a beautiful scenic country with some very artistic people but
things are okay and managable here if you have a:

    (a) a secure pensionable job
    (b) if you don't have a disability/illness and you are in full health
    (c) if you don't have children with a disabilities/illness
    (d) if you are not from a disadvantage area
    (e) if you not a single mother/lone parent from a disadvantaged or rural area where there is no transport or support in anyway other than immediate family
    (f) if your not an older/vulnerable person living alone especially in rural Ireland or a marginalised area
    (g) not a person with mental health difficulty or have depression especially the young and especially in rural Ireland where they are at risk to suicide

A lot of people cannot see the reality of how things actually are for many people and anyone can be in those situations at anytime, they cannot step inside their shoes and understand because they don't want to know and many don't care. I am Irish myself and I can see that a lot of people here like living in oblivion and not wanting to acknowledge the reality and be honest about things and take action and unit in a postive way

Because the Government don't give a s3it about their citizens. Which then leads back to my original argument. Ireland is run for the Elite. It's all moot anyway, I hope this place caves in on itself from the sheer ignorance and stupidity from which this mess is derived from. Ireland as a sovreign country is finished. We may as well call ourselves the republic of socialised austerity measures.
