Fox Adapting Guy Pearce Drama ‘Jack Irish’

It’s official: Fox has given a script plus penalty order to an adaptation of “Jack Irish,” the Guy Pearce-starring Australian miniseries based on crime writer Peter Temple’s books.

The series follows the title character, a part-time lawyer, debt collector and apprentice cabinet maker who is attempting to get his life back on track after his wife’s murder. He also has the unfortunate-for-him gift of finding himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Lars von Trier's next project will be an English-language TV series, it has been revealed.

The show, called The House That Jack Built, was announced during a press conference and screening for Nymphomaniac at the Venice Film Festival.

Producer Louise Vesth made the announcement to the crowd, reports Deadline.

She said: "I'm happy to announce that the next Lars von Trier project will be a TV series in the English language.

"He has a really, really good idea, which I cannot tell more about right now. He wants a huge cast, and from what I heard, I'm sure that it will be something that you have never seen before and you will definitely never see it again."

The House That Jack Built will be the first TV series to be directed by von Trier since his Danish TV show The Kingdom, which aired 20 years ago.

Executive producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen added that the series will be "without precedent" and told audiences that "you better hold your breath".

Von Trier will start working on the script later this year, with shooting to begin in 2016.

AMC greenlights a The Walking Dead companion series.

The new series will bring on Kirkman and The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd, while Son of Anarchy‘s Dave Erickson will serve as showrunner. As for other The Walking Dead talent coming to the series – it sounds like Hurd and Kirkman are it. AMC’s looking for something new, not another series featuring Rick and his less-than-merry band of zombie apocalypse survivors in a different location.

Fox has ordered a television sequel to Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report, EW has confirmed.
The drama would pick up 10 years after the events of the film, in which a division called Precrime, headed up by Tom Cruise’s Chief John Anderton, used Precogs to arrest people before they actually committed a crime. Precrime was shut down, and the three Precogs tried to go on to lead a normal life—which is where the sequel comes in. Haunted by visions of the future, one of the Precogs teams with a detective who is haunted by her past.
Amblin Television’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank will executive-produce with Max Borenstein (Godzilla), who will pen the project. Minority Report, also produced by 20th Century Fox and Paramount TV, was given a put pilot commitment, meaning Fox will have to pay a heavy penalty if it doesn’t go to pilot.

CBS to develop comedy series The Meatball Project

CBS is moving forward with The Meatball Project.

The multicamera comedy is inspired by real life chefs Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernow.

The Meatball Project will the story of the two best friends who decide to go into the restaurant business together, Variety reports.

A premiere date has yet to be announced.

Netflix has given a two-season order to Love, a new original series from Judd Apatow.

The unflinching and honest take on relationships stars Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust as Mickey and Gus, a couple who will navigate the exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment and other things they were hoping to avoid.

Love was created and written by Apatow, Rust and Leslie Arfin. Brent Forrester will executive-produce. The comedy will debut its first 10 episodes in 2016, followed by a 12-episode second season in 2017.

Zach Gilford has joined the cast of USA Network’s M*A*S*H-esque comedic drama pilot Stanistan as a love interest for Dexter‘s Jennifer Carpenter, TVLine has learned.
The project, penned by up-and-coming scribe Andy Parker, centers on the staff at the American compound in the Middle Eastern country of Stanistan, where State Department workers, covert CIA officers and journalists operate in a delicate balance of danger and silliness using every coping mechanism available.
Gilford will play Phillip Guthrey, an Infrastructure Manager for USAID. Phillip is close friends with Public Affairs Officer Marcie Post (Carpenter), and though he’d like for their friendship to become something more, his unrequited love is not his only secret.
Additionally, Jonathan Cake has been cast as Greg Weir, a suave and fearless on-air foreign correspondent who is entangled in a complicated affair with Marcie, but his quest to uncover the real story in war torn Stanistan will put him and his relationship in danger.

The 2002 film In America earned writer-director Jim Sheridan an Oscar nomination for his script, which he co-wrote with his daughters Naomi Sheridan and Kirsten Sheridan. The film was inspired by Sheridan’s own family. Now Sheridan will now be able to pull even more from his own experiences, as the film will be turned into a series at HBO.
As Deadline first reported, Sheridan and his daughters have signed on to adapt the film—and their lives—into an HBO series being produced by Fox TV Studios. The Sheridan trio will all serve as executive producers on the project, though how closely the show will stick to the film’s premise and characters is unknown at the time.
The original film told the story of an Irish immigrant family who moved into Hell’s Kitchen in New York to make a new life for themselves. There, they dealt with the lives of their neighbors, including drug addicts, transvestites, and Djimon Hounsou’s artistic recluse Mateo. In America also earned Samantha Morton a Best Actress Oscar nomination as well as a nomination for Hounsou for Best Supporting Actor.

Supergirl TV show gets series commitment from CBS.

Once the only network staying out of the whole new massive comic book TV show arena, CBS is going all in with a new Supergirl show - which they've given an official series commitment to, bypassing both the "in development" and "pilot" stage.

Based on the characters from DC Comics, Supergirl will follow Kara Zor-El. Born on the planet Krypton, Kara escaped amid its destruction years ago. And since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

Josh Holloway will star in Colony, a USA Network drama pilot from Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse.
Holloway will play former FBI agent Will Bowman, who lives in Los Angeles with his family while the city is occupied by an alien regime. Will is forced to work with the occupying government to thwart a growing resistance movement.
Cuse (Bates Motel, The Strain) will write and executive-produce the project with Ryan Condal (Hercules).

Netflix sets plans for animated series 'Kong - King of the Apes'

King Kong is coming to Netflix in 2016, but the animated Kong – King of the Apes won’t be telling the same old Skull Island story you’re used to hearing.
Set in 2050, Kong becomes a wanted fugitive after wrecking havoc at Alcatraz Island’s Natural History and Marine Preserve. What most humans on the hunt for the formidable animal don’t realize, though, is that Kong was framed by an evil genius who plans to terrorize the world with an army of enormous robotic dinosaurs. As the only beast strong enough to save humanity from the mechanical dinos, Kong must rely on the help of three kids who know the truth about him.
The original CGI animation series from Netflix and 41 Entertainment will be targeted at kids and introduced through a feature-length film that will be followed by 12 half-hour episodes starting in 2016. Industry vet Avi Arad, who’s produced Iron Man, the Spider-Man movies, and many of the X-Men films, is serving as executive producer on the series.

Lost In Space Series Reboot In Works At Legendary TV

The Robinsons are heading back to outer space. I’ve learned that Legendary TV has put in development Lost In Space, a remake of sci-fi master Irwin Allen’s 1965 cult TV classic.

Feature writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who penned Dracula Untold, which opens tonight, have signed on to write the adaptation.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Gets Animated for Disney XD TV Series.

“This is a very exciting time for the Marvel Animation Studio as we get to explore the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe by developing the first-ever ‘Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’ animated series,” said Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television. “After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew – now they’ll get it.”

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are once again teaming up: Affleck and Damon’s Pearl Street Films is developing Incorporated for Syfy along with CBS Television Studios, Syfy announced.

The “espionage thriller,” which is set to be written by David and Alex Pastor, takes place in a futuristic world where corporations appear to have limitless power. Per a press release, Incorporated “will be the story of one man’s efforts to beat the system.” Affleck and Damon will executive produce with Jennifer Todd and Ted Humphrey, who will also serve as showrunner.

Netflix reviving Care Bears with new series set for 2016.

EW can confirm, as originally announced in an interview with CNN Money, Netflix will be reviving the classic Care Bears brand with Care Bears and Cousins. While discussing the company’s slate of children’s programming, chief content officer Ted Sarandos announced Cousins as an addition to several projects already in the works. The first season is being planned for an early 2016 release, according to the interview.

His self-confidence enables him to break into the social circles of Manhattan's elite, testing the boundaries of access and social mobility. Throughout the series, Beverly's ability will grant him access to a life larger in every way than the one to which he was born. His chameleon-like approach to life will test his nerve as he takes his future into his own hands.
McQueen (12 Years a Slave) co-wrote the pilot script alongside World War Z's Matthew Michael Carnahan. Both will exec produce alongside See-Saw Films' Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (The King's Speech, Top of the Lake) and Russell Simmons, via the latter's overall deal with HBO. McQueen will direct the pilot, which is McQueen's first foray into television. Limitless

CBS has handed a pilot production commitment to Limitless, based on Relativity’s hit 2011 feature starring and executive produced by Bradley Cooper. He will executive produce the proposed series alongside Todd Phillips, his producing partner at Yet To Be Named Company, as well as Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci through their K/O Paper Products. CBS TV Studios, where K/O is based, is the studio.

Written/executive produced by Craig Sweeny, the series is picking up where the movie left off. It follows Brian Sinclair, the character played in the movie by Cooper, as he discovers the power of the mysterious drug NZT, and is coerced into using his newfound drug enhanced abilities for good. The film’s helmer, Neil Burger, is set to direct the potential pilot. He also is executive producing alongside Ryan Kavanaugh, Tucker Tooley, and Tom Forman through Relativity Television and K/O’s Heather Kadin. The film’s writer/producer, Leslie Dixon, who adapted Alan Glynn’s novel, and producer Scott Kroopf co-executive produce alongside Relativity TV’s Andrew Marcus and Ray Ricord.

Netflix to adapt Lemony Snicket books into TV series.

Lemony Snicket’s popular children’s book series A Series of Unfortunate Events will be adapted into an original television series, Netflix announced on Wednesday.

The 13-book series follows orphaned siblings Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire as they stumble through a world of mystery and misfortune. Netflix acquired the rights and the show will be produced in association with Paramount Television, which made the 2004 film adaptation. Snicket, the pen name of American writer Daniel Handler, will be an executive producer.

Confirmation that it will go ahead - Starz is bringing Evil Dead to TV.

The premium network has greenlighted an original series that will serve as a follow-up to the horror comedy film franchise, Ash vs. Evil Dead, it was announced Monday.

Original Evil Dead director Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell will return for the 10-episode half-hour series, slated for a 2015 premiere.

Netflix Greenlights ‘The Crown’ As First UK Produced Original Series.

Netflix has greenlit their first UK original series.

After months of rumours, the streaming giant has formally announced a deal to give royal drama The Crown, which charts the reign of HM Queen Elizabeth II, a 10 episode straight to series order.

Based on the West End play The Audience, The Crown is described as an inside look at the relationship between the Queen and her many Prime Ministers. It is eyed as a potential long running series, with each 10 episode season charting a decade of the Queen’s reign. Given that set up, numerous actresses will play the role of the Queen, though casting has yet to be announced.

The first season of The Crown, which will debut globally on the streaming service in 2016, will open with the 25-year-old Princess, faced with the daunting prospect of leading the most famous monarchy in the world while forging a relationship with the domineering, war-hardened Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

FX Network has announced that they are developing From Hell.

A drama series based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, which was adapted into the 2001 20th Century Fox feature starring Johnny Depp and Robbie Coltrane. Don Murphy, who produced the film, is executive producing. David Arata (Children Of Men) will write the adaptation. The Hughes brothers, who directed the movie, are not involved.

From Hell tells the tale of Jack the Ripper with the killer himself as the main character. Detailing the events leading up to the Whitechapel killings and the cover-up that followed, the 572-page graphic novel is a meditation on the mind of a madman whose savagery and violence gave birth to the 20th century.

Taboo

Fox has given a series order to a new drama starring Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) as an adventurer in Africa.

Titled Taboo, the series is set in 1813 and follows James Keziah Delaney (Hardy), “a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a very dangerous game.”

The project was created by Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy. Taboo is executive produced by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner), among others, and written by Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things). “FX is the perfect partner to engage with this dark, fantastic world that Tom and Steven have created,” Scott said.

Taboo will have an eight episode first season that’s tentatively slated to premiere in 2016.

Original series star Idris Elba is on board as an exec producer but is not expected to star in the Yank version. Peter Chernin, Katherine Pope, Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner also exec produce.

Elba has earned praise and kudos for his work as a savvy detective troubled by the brutal murder of his wife. The series ran for three seasons on the BBC, starting in 2010, and has aired Stateside on BBC America.

Cross has said there are no plans for a fourth season in the U.K., but there has been chatter about a possible “Luther” featur

Hulu is giving a straight-to-series pick-up to Difficult People, which stars Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner, as a pair of best friends in New York City whose irreverent behavior lands them in some very awkward situations. Klausner wrote the pilot and also serves as an executive producer with Parks and Recreation star/producer Amy Poehler and Dave Becky of Louie.

Martin Scorsese’s Cortés has a home: HBO.

The drama follows Hernán Cortés, the man who led the fall of the Aztec empire, and the friends and enemies he made along the way. Scorsese is signed on to direct and executive produce. Mississippi Burning writer Chris Gerolmo will write and executive produce, and Benecio del Toro will also executive produce (and might star).
Scorsese is already familiar with HBO: He directed the series premiere of Boardwalk Empire and the pilot for a yet-to-be-titled HBO project about rock and roll in the ’70s.

Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter director Timur Bekmambetov is venturing into television with Warriors Of Oz, a mini-series project which has landed at Syfy. Bekmambetov will create Warriors Of Oz based on his idea. It is a fantasy-action reimagining of the classic story in which a warrior from present day Earth is transported to a post-apocalyptic future Oz where he must team up with three other warriors, Heartless, Brainless, and Coward, in order to defeat the evil Wizard who has enslaved the land. Syfy’s Childhood’s End has found its lead: have cast Mike Vogel (Under the Dome, Bates Motel) as Ricky Stormgren, a midwestern farmer whose life is turned upside down when he is chosen to be the sole representative on Earth for an alien species apparently seeking to aide humanity. “Ricky struggles with his new-found fame as a blue collar prophet, facing the weight of the entire world looking to him for answers.”

Vogel joins Emmy nominee Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), who will portray the alien Overlord Karellen, along with Ashley Zukerman (Manhattan) and Osy Ikhile (Clap!).

Childhood’s End is a six-hour miniseries adapted from Arthur C. Clarke’s 1953 novel and is produced by Akiva Goldsman (Lone Survivor) and Mike DeLuca (Captain Philips), with writer Matthew Graham (BBC’s Life on Mars).

Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon could be coming to TV. The actresses have signed on to star in a limited series based on the New York Times best-selling book Big Little Lies, with David E. Kelley (The Crazy Ones) attached to write and executive-produce, EW has confirmed.
From author Liane Moriarty, the subversive comedy tells the story of three mothers of kindergartners whose perfect lives begin to unravel to the point of murder.
Kidman and her production banner Blossom Films, as well as Witherspoon and her banner Pacific Standard, optioned the rights to the book in August for a potential feature film, but the project will now be shopped as a limited series to various cable networks and streaming services. Kelley, Witherspoon, Kidman and Moriarty will all executive-produce.

Lauren Graham will headline and co-write Kate on Later, a comedy in development at NBC.
The single-camera project, which has a script commitment at the network, follows Graham’s Kate as she is afforded the opportunity of becoming one of the only women in late-night television.
The actress will co-write with Liz Tuccillo (He’s Just Not That Into You) and will executive-produce alongside Ellen DeGeneres’ Very Good Productions and Warner Brothers Television. - Source Deadline

Oscar-winner Melissa Leo has signed onto M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming TV series Wayward Pines. The event series received the greenlight from Fox earlier this month, with an autumn 2014 debut scheduled.
Based on the novel Pines by Blake Crouch, the pilot has been adapted by The Playboy Club‘s Chad Hodge. Dillon stars as Secret Service agent Ethan Burke. When he arrives in the small Idaho town, he is tasked with finding out what happened to two missing federal agents. As expected, all is not as it seems as he winds up with a fistful of questions and no answers in sight.
Leo will play Pam, an “intense, unpredictable” nurse who tends to Burke after he ends up in Wayward Pines hospital. Starting off their relationship nice as (cherry) pie, Pam soon reveals her true colours and the two become enemies.
The show’s creators have acknowledged that Pines owes…well, its central premise to David Lynch and Mark Frost’s seminal cult classic, Twin Peaks. That show focused on Kyle McLachlan’s Agent Cooper. Sent to the small Washington town of Twin Peaks to solve the murder of Laura Palmer he too finds himself grappling with more questions than answers. Twisting, turning and offering up the finest slab of Lynchian you’re gonna get, the show captivated audiences in the 1990s.
Following on from Fox’s previous success with limited event series (a fixed number of episodes for a story arc) The Following, they’ve also added the 24: Live Another Day reboot to their TV slate. You’ve got to wonder why Shyamalan was approached for such a project. The director once synonymous with boundary bustin’ inventive thrillers has lost his clout in recent years. The Last Airbender suffered huge financial losses along with a severe critical beating. His latest feature, After Earth arrives soon in cinemas so we’ll see if he’s sharpened up.
Wayward Pines will premiere on Fox in 2014.

Premieres Thursday, 14th May, for a 10 week run.

Five-time Emmy-nominated Mad Men alum Christina Hendricks is going on the road with Showtime’s Roadies.

In the one-hour comedy pilot, which follows the day-to-day workings of a successful rock tour as seen through the eyes of the behind-the-scenes crew members, Hendricks will play Shelli, the band’s production manager — and thus work partner to Luke Wilson’s Bill. Shelli is described as “married to her job — and scary-good at it.”
In addition to Hendricks and Wilson (Old School), the Roadies cast includes Imogen Poots (The Look of Love), Rafe Spall (One Day), Peter Cambor (NCIS: Los Angeles) and Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider).

Academy Award winner Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous) will write, direct and exec-produce the one-hour pilot, which will shoot in Vancouver in early 2015. Winnie Holzman (My So-Called Life) will serve as showrunner, while other executive producers include Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk.

The Studio which is executive-produced by George Clooney, will be written by Rescue Me's Peter Tolan and comes from Sony Pictures Television -- has been scooped up by Showtime. The network has offered a script commitment with a significant penalty attached.

An inside look at the showbiz industry, The Studio follows a movie studio in the early 1990s when massive corporations were swallowing up studios and changing the entertainment industry. The human element comes from the studio's partners, who are also best friends, as they run the business and do all they can to maintain their power.
