Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. well spotted folks ..,,but for all the cloud development why did'nt these clouds produce more than they did and why did many parts of the UK get much more severe storms..bigger hail.more strikes etc ....are we just plain unlucky or lucky depending on your view of severe weather.

Down to the geography of the two I'd guess, there's a longer land track from north to south in Britain so storms have longer to build and there's more mountains in the north to act as a lifting mechanism. If you watched the radar earlier showers were developing just south of the Pennines then intensifying the further south they went.

Almighty downpour here now south of arklow.
Very loud,a lot of hail, its been ongoing for the last half hour with no let up.
So loud I was expecting thunder but none yet.

I see that - looks nasty. I wonder how that has developed. has me intrigued. Radar is also showing very intense echoes in the midlands although it appears completely stationary so I would guess the radar returns are a reflection of your precipitation or else the midlands are getting a right soaking!!!

South Wicklow/North Wexford looks like the got a right deluge in the early hours of this morning! Drifting off into the Irish sea now.

gosh that "shower" lasted 5hrs ,theres a flood here, peaked at 120mm/hr and dropped 18mm here:eek:.
I wasn't amused when the eagle on the radio this morning said there weren't many showers about this morning and that the heavy ones would really get going in the afternoon.

I saw the earlier met.ie radar images,it seems to have exploded in the early hours over the high ground near lugnaquilla and kept growing and really grew when it hit water becoming slow moving and growing even stronger on the coast as if it needed a drink.
It looks like a shallow low may have developed.
I'd have to go back to the house to check pressure readings.

    now that doesn't surprise me.
I have blackout curtains but didn't hear anything other than the roar of the rain.
It's still raining down here by the way very lightly - it never stopped. So its been raining now a solid 8hrs in ark low.
If that happened up the road in Dublin, met eireann would be making more of
    "to do" about it!
Just my smartphone lately so not as easy to look at things in more detail.

Just watched that shower back on the radar from 4 am . REALLY interesting how it started just over the wicklow mountains, probably due to upward forcing?

Then it spread out south and east And now looks like to be heading into wales as a small squall line maybe?

Anyways those showers in the Irish sea heading this way better hurry up as i'm in work at 5!! ... :(

Nothing moving very fast out there! Have to keep an eye on home grown showers.

From clear skies here about an hour ago, cumulus clouds really getting going/bubbling now. Starting to see a few specks dotted around the place now on radar.

Next Tuesday is looking like the next decent chance of good convection for most of us

I know a decent time away for thing's to change, more especially so with it being a low pressure system, and the angle/position will most likely change no doubt but here it is.

Looking at the radar there must be a few spots in Waterford and Cork getting a duluge! Heavy showers down there not going anywhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭John2009

Clip of a nice hail shower that passed over me at 3:30pm, hail the size of peas, kept the dog amuzed as they bounced in the back door :)

Am watching some showers clouds really building to my north over the last 30 mins or so. Anvil formed around 20 mins ago and is spreading our rapidly. Latest radar has it over Roscommon but no fallstreaks from this particular cell as of yet.

Edit: Anvil decaying as rapidly as it formed but another small cell seems to be bubbling up ahead of it.

Edit again: Strike in Pangea country in the last 15 mins:

    200336.png

Sky looking north from Tuam. Little cells popping up and have since merged. Some small hail here now from from the black cloud above:

Some seriously apocalyptic type clouds to my east.
Didn't see a strike, but wasn't looking out for long.

Look at these beast of showers around Bundoran

For anybody up early enough. Like me. :) Looks like little cell has developed over the Irish Sea and has just arrived on the coast of south Dublin. Producing a few sparks. http://brunnur.vedur.is/athuganir/eldingar/

When I saw you online I thought you were the perfect recipient for that shower! :) Any thunder?

Just heard distant runble of thunder here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭patneve2

    Yeah, nice rumbles

    Moderate rain now

  • Registered Users Posts: 486 ✭✭DUBACC

Lots of hail here in South Dublin (Shankill). 3 or 4 flashes of lightning and big claps of thunder.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,151 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Can hear more distant thunder now. Looks like shower is not going to reach here. Can see the dark cloud to my east and south east but can can see bright skies to the north east - looks like shower is getting pushed south as it makes landfall.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 3,093 Mod ✭✭✭✭ktulu123

Lots of hail in Kilmacanogue & the thunder sounds like its overhead its so loud!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

All passed inland of me but about 20 rumbles heard, nearest about 2 miles away. Sun shining here, but black inland!

Centre has moved SW of me.

Another shower making landfall at Arklow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,336 ✭✭✭arctictree

I'd estimate contact with the water to be about 100 - 200m diameter. Anyone any idea of the likely wind speed involved at the surface?

    - hard to tell from the video but it looks like it might have passed across the DART line (which is literally on the shore at that point).
