Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

what stuff did they test for and the like
Hi,medical was last week, fairly straightforward but they do test things properly,sight,sound,lungs,wieght...all the things that may infringe on the job, seems the same one as the Army,if you are healthy at all you will be ok,have you got yours soon?

I only sent in my background checks just over a week ago. havent heard anything about a medical yet.
do your background checks have to come back clear first before been sent for a medical?
And did they check your teeth? i think i may need a filling ive made an appointment see see a dentist just in case.

Hi,dont think backround checks need to be done it depends how busy they are, some people do the medical and then dont get through,no gurantees, they do briefly check your teeth but only visually so would need to be fairly bad to hold you up on that.....Murphy,why did you have the hep b shots? do all trainees have them?

    questions questions:D

just wondering if anyone has passed the medical with a BMI higher than 30 or maybe knows someone that has?

do they make an allowance if everything else is within limits and is the medical less stringent for the Reserves than for the regular force?

did interview with sargeant and he said I might get called soon which doesn't give me enough time to get my weight down..

don't want to waste all their time by failing the freekin thing, and also, can the medical be repeated or would you have to go through the whole process again?

sorry about all the questions and thanks in advance if anyone has the answers, PM if necesary:)

    Lehanmore,

I'm not sure about what the situation is if you MBI is over 30 or whether the medical can be repeated again or not, but to answer your other question (as far as I know), the medical is the excactly the same standard for the GR as for the FT Garda. In fact the whole process is the same (medical, vetting process etc.), the only difference being the level of training given (which obviously is much longer) and also the preliminary aptitude tests where there are more,at least that's what I think!!!

Why don't you e-mail/phone the Garda Reserve Dept in the Garda headquarters in Dublin in relation to repeat medicals at gardareserve@garda.ie

    Phone: 01-6662568/70/71
    Fax: 01-6662572

They should get back to you within the next day or so.
    :D

    Thanks for that Wetgarden:cool:

I guess I'll go do it first and see what they'll fail me on ( a bit like the NCT:D)
then I'll go through the channels from there.;)

I'm in the same boat as yourself although I've met the Super.
I'm prepared for a wait of at least 9 months, in reality no one can tell you when you'll be called, just wait it out and work on your physical fitness (only if you need to, of course:cool:)

I received same but also with a list of dates for me to revert with the one that suited. I would give them a ring/email, it seems strange to ask for a form to be filled in and then no date to produce same at medical.

    Regards.

Passed the medical today, last hurdle thankfully completed and received a call this afternoon from GR office to say I'm starting on the 26th. How did you get on MasterSun? Anybody else there today from this thread?

Sorry to hear that :( ,what's the story now, did he say you can go off and correct them then come back and do it again or what ?

Also what does the eye test fully entail ? How far away from the eye/snellen chart are you made to stand when doing this test ?

Very sorry to hear that Master Sun. That’s a lot of disappointed people on the day then. I was the 1st I think, Doc very quick but thorough.

As CO19's question, were you deferred? Do you have glasses or will you go to an optician? Try to give it another go if they'll allow it
I wear glasses (last 3 months only) but didn't need them for eye test as I passed even with my weak left eye.

CO19 - chart is approx 8-10 feet away, read down to the approx 5th line (6,18) with one eye covered, repeat with the other eye and that's it. He does a few more tests with an eye box for colour, peripheral vision, etc.

Are you going for a medical?

    hi Mountain Man,

I wear glasses, but they didn't let me to wear it during the test. I was only able to read the top 2 lines, so they suggested i should do a laser treatment
if i really want to join the force. Of course, i have to pay the expense myself.
anyway, they kept my file and gave me some time to think about it.
But i have no intention of having the Eye surgery so soon, so i'm gonna wait a few yrs and re-apply from the start.

I'm currently waiting on background checks since march but recently I've been sent another form to fill out and send back.

I'm to give details of my voluntary work within the community and list my educational achievements so far.

    Anyone else get this?

No lehanemore, I never received this form while waiting for my checks to clear. I thought these two items would have been covered through the GR2 form and interview!

have my medical the 6th august, if i pass start training on the 9th August.

just wondering though do i travel to templemore of the friday night or saturday morning? where do we stay? also have to drive to dublin on sunday night as have garda interview the next day?

from the north west, and when i drive to dublin only have to go as far as liffey valley as i turn off the parkwest, however coming from templemore which side of dublin will i be coming into?

going to look it up on the aa website now.

not looking forward to medical as at moment my weight is going to be a problem but the last few days doing an hour in the gym, half hour in the pool and plan to do this for the next 2 weeks and have cut back on the crap food.

thanks leinsterdude, had look at map yesterday

will drive to athlone, which is grand have done numerous trips to there and then onto templemore, was planning to drive back to athlone, then to longford and onto dublin, last time i was on the red cow it was mental and dont really fancy that, i know it is a longer route but i know the road and just might be easier, it will be only a once off, staying in parkwest as a friend lives there and will get luas into jervis street on monday morning.

diet ? i hate them love my food way too much, am working out though so we will see. am doing an hour in the gym with half hour in the pool after. mostly cardio in gym and some weights but not a huge amount yet. at mo just want to concentrate on cardio.
    thanks for the advice

Wouldn't do any harm to check your BMI, just goolge it and put in your height and weight. The doctor will check both during the medical, going by orther threads they don't like to see higher than 30.

I'm travelling down on the 8th as well, hope to meet you there, best of luck with the medical. Any questions on same just ask or pm me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21 Story1970

Background checks ! Thats was holding me up at the moment , spoke to the GR dept who advised that until these were complete I would not be able to take the medical !! it's now a year since I completed the written exam and Interview and still waiting

I hope I dont have to wait that long!!:(

Is the medical for the GR the same as the medical for the full timers? If so then do GR members who apply for the full timers have to do the medical again?

Yeah its exactly the same. No PCT tho for the Reserve. I applied for the full time and have my medical coming up. So yeah you must do it again.

But I'm scheduled to go down on the 20th of September if I pass :)

I live in Dublin & I just wanted to know how to get down there... Is there an early train & stuff??
I have no one to drive me so early so I was gonna go down the night before & stay somewhere...
I really have no clue about how to get down to Templemore!

    Marymulr - Congrats :D
I heard our group are really lovely & a bunch of characters from what I was told :) Heard there's only 30 too... Really looking forward to it!

Gonna have to buy a little suitcase... Lol :)
