Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just noticed after updating that having a ladder with ladder pieces on every second block doesnt work anymore. Has to be a continuous ladder now.

I used to have that problem as well, then I realised I was running off of the old .exe :P

    Download the new one!

No way! That's oing to cause no end of trouble. :(

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,135 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

Oh dear god.... lot of people complaining about the update. Lots of bugs:

    • Repetitively putting Smeltable items in the furnace counts as a crafting statistic
    • Side grass will not work if on "Fast" graphics.
    • Achievements only work in SMP if you have already completed first achievement in Single Player.
    • FPS counter shows Chunk Updates instead of FPS, usually while generating new chunks
    • Crash when Detector Rails are placed beside normal rails.
    • Blocks can't be placed on snow.
    • If you change Advanced OpenGL to on and then back again, giant holes will appear that you can see through.
    • Jumping off a fence in SMP triggers an anti-flight kick.
    • Rain will fall through transparent blocks and stairs, acting as if there is no block there. This can be a problem if your house has a stair-made roof
    • When hitting a grass block the destroying animation is darker on the side than the animation on top of the grass block, though only on fancy graphics.
    • Flowing water no longer pushes empty minecarts that fall into it
    • GUI: create new world input boxes misaligned under small and normal settings
    • Sometimes you might not get an achievement even if you do what it requires to get. This can usually be fixed by doing it in another world.
    • Locked Chest is once again obtainable through inventory editing or SMP /give commands. The chests can be placed, but can't be interacted with, and they disappear shortly after placement.
    • In singleplayer, game resumes when 'Achievements' is clicked on the pause menu, instead of remaining paused.
    • Riding in a minecart from the south into a corner going from north to west (so it's not connected to the current track) will crash the game. Possibly also true for other directions, yet if you're going in the same corner coming from the east, it will work as usual.
    • Trying to redirect a rail corner to another track using redstone (a switch) will crash the game.
    • Detector rails does not transfer power to rails connected on a slope.
    • Burning animation on furnaces may remain after done smelting.
Think it might take longer than normal for bukkit to be updated, the devs could be sitting on a rock with this one, not recoding until 1.5_01 is released for hotfixing. :(

    • Side grass will not work if on "Fast" graphics.

That's not even included in the update, it already works on fast, but the fix was for Fancy only

Well, this may take some time to iron out everything.
Still, I expect 1.5_01 in about a week. Usually they patch things like this pretty quickly. That or another no-version update. Hopefully done by then, but I'd say about two weeks for everything, including mods and plugins, to be running as usual.

Just some late night speculations :P

Just read up on it now. Apparently only one new feature, but it's and automap! Looks pretty cool if this is a genuine pic:

Yeah, someone dug down in my chapel building in Cherrytown too, and broke up one of my library blocks in the town at spawn. I know it's nothing major, but if it's not griefing either put up a notice saying sorry, or replace it.

(Ps, what texture mod is that, Xenon?)

    Its LB Photo Realism

    1.6 is out this week!

    Looks like a good patch...

    • Trapdoors (If that is what he means by "Hatches")
    • Long grass (no longer able to get seeds from hoeing grass have to go through the long grass) (PS I hope that means Pokemon lol)
    • Map
    • Nether for Multiplayer
I guess I need to save my minecraft.jar file for 1.5 now so that I won't be left waiting for the updates.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,135 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

    Moved posts. :)

Some network fixes in the patch too so fingers crossed the lag issues will be reduced/fixed

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,752 ✭✭✭pablomakaveli

It'll be great to have the Nether active now as well. Maybe we can attempt to build a little town in there though the ghasts might make that difficult.

Will the towny mod be implemented after this update?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,135 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

It's on hold at the moment but if it is because of the server instability stuff, but from what the patch notes say it seems Notch has fixed it somewhat. So yeah, I hope it will :P

1.6 is out now for those who want to give it a whirl.

Edit: and almost immediately, 1.6.2 is out.

And it's crashing every couple of minutes. Not even freezing, just quitting completely. People may want to wait for a few more updates to it before updating.

Right, at this stage I'm willing to call it a buggy mess. It crashes all the time, you get moments when every block except lava disappears, there's a strange bug where you use planks to fuel a furnace but the planks never run out (this ones actually quite handy), and the lights keep going out.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,135 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

Cheers Humanji, I'll keep the server running on 1.5 in that case. Was going to run it in Vanilla 1.6 but don't see any point if it just keeps crashing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Yeah, 1.6.2 seems pretty buggy. I found myself trying to swap out an old pickaxe for a new one and when I clicked on the new pickaxe, the old one disappeared.

I also found that by right-clicking a single iron block into a furnace, it would create a new iron block in the furnance and leave the one I have "grabbed". I can create an infinite number of iron blocks (keep right-clicking). I have 400 of them smelting right now :D

Won't my client update as soon as I log in?
Won't that stop me from playing one the 1.5 server?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I've noticed that sometimes if you left click a group of ore blocks, all but one disappear. It's a pain in the hoop!

Kepp right-clicking and you should be able to create as many block as you want. Or with furnace:

Stick a single coal block in the bottom row. Take a single block of anything which you can use in the furnace, and right-click, then again, and again, and again. And you can keep creating them to your heart's desire. Got a few hundred gold blocks smelting now, this'll make mining for diamond much easier. :D

1.6.3 is out now. It's a bit more stable, but haven't tested it much.

When you start the game up it'll ask you if you want to update. Just say no and you should be fine.

1.6.3 seems to have put a stop to this.

The map is a compass surrounded by 8 paper. The trapdoor is 6 blocks of wood taking up the bottom 6 squares of the crafting table.

EDIT: Now it's telling me that I don't have a graphics card and won't start anymore. So I guess I'm waiting until 1.6.4 :(

I may as well give a mini review of the less bugged part of the update.

The tall grass is a bit odd looking at first, but I'm kind of happy now that I'm not going to have my inventory filled everytime I till a bit of land for crops.

I didn't get to play with the trapdoor much, but it's a cool little addition. You can link a load of them together (I've been told they make a great drawbridge) with redstone and they're also a nice pattern for those who want to use them as standard floor tiles.

The map, from what I can tell, is next to useless. It doesn't cover a particularly large area and only really serves to show you places that you're already going to be familiar with. The quality of it isn't up to much either. Someone might find a use for it, but it just seems like a waste of a compass to me.

One thing I didn't get to check, but heard of is that they've removed booster carts. :(

All in all, I could really have done without this update.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

And 1.6.4 is out. Still crashes, but at least I can get in now. Some frame rate issues, but they're at least on the right track.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,752 ✭✭✭pablomakaveli

The map is a bit dissappointing really. Theres not a lot of detail in them. I could only make out some of the larger buildings but smaller ones dont seem to show very well.

They should have the ability to let you draw on them. (maybe make a charcoal pen out of furnaced sticks :p ) so you can mark points of interest.

(May have that, haven't played yet.)

I can confirm that booster carts are no longer working :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I hope to god they give the powered rails a bit of actual power now. With the booster carts gone, my minecart system is utterly useless. :(

lads, does the tall grass grows in allready made worlds? i cant see any tall grass in my sp game at all, but i can get it when i make new world :(
